Amethyst by Les McClave
It's been established among sensible people of my acquaintance that Giffen was a jerk for writing Marion Winston's spiral into insanity. It was too much with a lot already going on.
But while I was quickly looking for something else, I did run into this panel from the 4-issue Amethyst miniseries...
I do appreciate the irony of this line.
Because Emmy's husband, Michael, sounds like he's met Marion and knows she's mentally unstable.
But Michael may NOT know that Emmy was adopted by Marion. And that Emmy's birthmother became a bona fide supervillain (Fire Jade) for a while. Emmy may be worrying about nature, nurture, or both. Cool double-meaning here, actually.
So I was skimming the first tpb, and noticed this little gag of the tiger attacking Bart and Cassie fending it off in the bg.
And it hit me: that tiger is an awful normal-looking earth tiger... but it's on the Gemworld?
I have 3 theories.
It's one of Prince Carnelian's mechanical tigers, but it's painted orange for verisimilitude. (Prince Carnelian is the adopted son of the main baddie, Darth Opal. He's obsessed with earth tech bc he knows that's the world he originally came from.)
2. It's a flying tiger from the land of Topaz that has lost its wings for some reason. Maybe it got shot down out of the sky?
3. It's actually an earth tiger. Imported at some point for some nefarious purpose. But it escaped captivity.

Hmm… either Kon and Amethyst
Or, Bart and Cissie
Eggs
It’s Amy’s turn to cook. Team Breakfast Tuesdays have been a thing for almost a month now, and it’s her turn. She’s warned everybody that she’s hardly touched a stove top in her life, but Cassie said that if they had to live with Bart’s cooking experiments, they could stomach her First Tries too.
So she pestered Dad to teach her eggs. Because he always said “Eggs are easy.” and he made it look easy, so that makes eggs her best bet, right?
Though of course, Dad’s advice was a lot less specific than she was hoping.
“Just a little bit of oil, and whatever seasonings you want, Ames. No sweat. When they change texture, you start flipping.”
Right. Yeah. So what it REALLY boiled down to was practicing. Amy could do that. She could practice until her socks fell off.
Burning them was a thing for the first four times. Under-cooking… only happened once because it was that gross, so never again. Under seasoning made everything so boring that she just fed it to Taffy because Taffy’s doggy taste buds didn’t care.
But after two dozen eggs of practice, Tuesday is finally here, and Amy feels as ready as she’s ever going to be. She’s grabbed her seasonings almost at random, but Dad does that too, and the texture looks right: solidified but soft and jiggly.
She’s following Robin’s advice: make three giant batches. One to feed Impulse right away. One for him to eat more slowly. The rest for everybody else.
As the team digs, in, Cassie and Robin both nod at her, letting her know its good, so she lets herself sit a little straighter as she takes her first bite.
…. Yeah. It’s good. Thanks be to the Twelve. Nothing compared to Jinny’s pancakes from last week—those were to die for—but good enough that Amy is not embarrassed at all.
She’s two bites in when she realizes that Superboy has set his fork down after only one bite.
He’s just… starring at his plate. Like it’s a ghost. She sees his lips move, though his voice is a little to quiet for her to hear.
“What the hell?”
Amy scoots her chair closer to him. Is he allergic? She put some cheese in there. Can Kryptonians eat cheese? It sounds like something they should be able to handle, but if she were Superman and she was allergic to cheese, would she advertise it? Probably not. Sooo…
He looks up at her, still looking haunted, but thankfully healthy.
“How did you make it taste like…? Does this have berraghon in it?”
“Taragon? Probably? I can—”
“No. Berraghon. With… with the blue leaves?”
Oh. Oh yeeeaahhh.
On the Gemworld, she kept some herbs in her utility belt. For camp cooking. When she got trapped back on Earth, she just… stuck it on her family’s spice rack. There is definitely some of that in the eggs.
So now the eggs taste kinda like Gemworld eggs.
Funny, that.
So she explains.
Kon exhales. “Thought I was going crazy for sec. Lophi… Lophi always put berraghon in the breakfast food. I used to tell her it was too sweet for eggs, but she’d do it anyway.”
Amy eyes the stove. “Too sweet? I can make some more right now—”
“No. No it’s… it’s perfect. Leave it.”
“Okay.”
Bart zips up to her half-a second later and also assures her that breakfast is perfect, but Amy suspects that his bar for that was just “hot, edible, and plentiful”. But a compliment is a compliment, so she’ll take it.
She tries not too worry too much about the way Kon licks his lips as then looks off into the distance.
When her parents get back from work and ask her how it went, she tells them that Team Breakfast Tuesday went great.
It’s close enough to true.

Plot bunnies driving me crazy because every one that blossoms is WAY to big for me to actually write. I'm rusty. I need something small.
I don't need to do an epic-scale version of the Fire Jade story arc from Amethyst comics re-written to incorporate Young Justice 2.0.
Even if my brain really, really likes the idea of Tam Fox being kidnapped and offered the chance to become a princess of House Garnet.
Brain. Please.
From "...And Wait the 'Pointed Hour" in Amethyst #1, November 1987. Keith Giffen plot, Mindy Newell script, Esteban Maroto pencils & inks, Tatjana Wood colors, John Costanza letters.

god the DC Wiki is so useless, why is the entire Gemworld article a page and a half long
