My Dog Has Not Been Skunked, Exactly
So Gamut has two cat brothers. She is aware that cats have five pointy ends and like to play games with their personal space. As an energetic young thing, she has learned the correct thing to do with cats: you strafe them. They hold still, and you run by at top speed just out of range of the pointy bits.
My grandparents have a skunk in their neighborhood.
Gamut went out the front door and took off like lightning. She is very, very fast - like clocked over thirty miles an hour (50 kph) fast. It is at this point clear that the skunk did as skunks do and raised its tail.
By that time she was already barreling past, and jogging off to do a victory lap.
The end result was that I was in more of a panic to get out of the driveway before the skunk smell drifted over than I was to get the dog out of the car. On the half hour drive home, I became gradually more convinced that we had escaped unscathed.
We have not escaped unscathed.
We have, however, developed a result like unto an animal a week after being skunked. It's smelly; unpleasantly so, even. But it's bearable to have in a sealed car. I've rubbed her down with towels, removed her towel from the car, and made a pile of skunk laundry. I've given her a bath, so that she smells of lavender and skunk musk. Hyacinth has covered the couch in tarps and we have removed her luxury bed as an option.
And now we wait.

That limit is called its *color gamut* — the subset of visible colors a device can display or print. 🔵 sRGB — the web standard, smallest gamut, works everywhere 🟢 Adobe RGB — wider gamut for print workflows, richer greens & blues 🔴 DCI-P3 — the cinema & modern display standard (iPhones, MacBooks, high-end monitors) 🟣 ProPhoto RGB — enormous gamut, used in photography for maximum editing headroom Why should you care? 👉 Design for digital? Stick to sRGB. Colors look consistent across screens. 👉 Printing? Use Adobe RGB or CMYK simulation for richer results. 👉 Video/photo editing? DCI-P3 gives you that extra vibrancy viewers expect. The trouble: a beautiful red on your screen might fall outside your printer's gamut. That's why soft-proofing in Lightroom or Photoshop is essential — it shows you exactly which colors will shift when printed. Pro tip: When sending files to print, convert to the working color space your print shop specifies (usually sRGB or a specific CMYK profile). Embed the ICC profile in your file. This is my latest painting with all its components. The top painting is a full spectrum rendering of my setup. The lower one is a gamut mask, meaning I only had the colors in the triangle to recreate the first setup. You can trick your brain quite a bit. This one was pretty fun.
