Desire: What you Know vs What you Understand
When it comes to desire I feel like the distinction between two types of desire isn’t made (at least not often enough). There are two things we want. The first are the things we know we want. These are the things we want because of who we are. The second are the things we understand that society wants us to want. These are the things we chase for social validation. When we pursue the latter and get it we feel pleasure. It’s like getting a viral post. People approve of you. Society thinks you’re good. We’ve achieved some sense of increased status. But, that joy quickly fades and it’s not long before we need another hit. Chasing status is like putting happiness into a leaky jar. You’ll have to keep filling it or you’ll soon be empty again. When you get something that you know you want, then you feel a joy that stays in your life for as long as that thing stays. When you get a job that you desire (even if society thinks its a waste of time) then you feel a little less empty. You feel a sense of fulfillment.
People chase things that society tells them to want. When they get the first one they soon feel empty again so they chase after something else society told them to want. They get that and any joy they get is fleeting. They continue doing this until they conclude that happiness is impossible. That we are just programmed to want things and that we can’t want the things we have. We’ll always want more. This is only true when you chase status. All status does is tell you that you have value within society but society is always changing therefore you must always be affirming this. It’s only when you chase and obtain the things you want (love, job, lifestyle etc) that you’ll feel a little bit happier. A more permanent happiness that only depends on you
