ok so, youve mentioned fukutora so i was wondering if you had any specific opinions on them or like. whats do u think is ur vibe with their dynamic and such.
u also mentioned how you hate characterizing kenma bcs of how much charactization conflicts there r with him but i rlly am curious abt your thoughts on his relationship with tora and naga ( fukunaga ) and just generally the rest of nekoma
Fukutora is a pairing that sort of grew on me the longer I got to feel them out. Fukutora is, to me, a âleftoversâ pairing, one of those ships that got stuck together because their other shipping contenders were taken already, which is a thing the haikyuu fandom is pretty notorious for. Hence why I donât really use them as background pairings. IE: the reason you donât see them in my works is because I donât see it as being relevant in the same way something like background Tsukkiyama or Kagehina would be. So I tend to âsacrificeâ them to avoid overcluttering my fics with relationships.Â
As such, I donât have a ton of personal headcanons for them. I am obsessed with that Manga panel where Tora reveals that he considers Fukunaga his rival and that he refuses to be left behind/let Fukunaga outpace him. Thatâs great, thatâs really good stuff.Â
Doodle of those guys I hate
New year new yuri
It was hardly a secret that Fukunaga liked observing people. He was quite obvious in it, watching people with wide eyes, tracking what they were doing with tilts of his head, and sometimes going as far as forming binoculars with his hands and putting them over his eyes to tell people "hey! I see you!" (mostly for the comedic effect, of course).
He didn't know what he liked about it, just that he did. He guessed he liked seeing what people were doing and how they went about things, trying not to compare himself to others too much whilst doing it. He liked seeing how people changed from how they acted around others versus how they were when they were alone. He liked witnessing the small, human moments: a smile when they saw a cute dog, a clench of a fist when they missed a spike, ears tinting red when they looked at him. But the latter only happened with Tora, he supposed.
Fukunaga liked watching Tora the most. He liked how strong he was, how outwardly expressive and committed. He threw his entire heart, body, and soul into whatever he was doing, not seeming to care for the expense. It made him entertaining to watch, especially when he grew passionate or exploded over the smallest, most inane things like tripping on air and making a spectacle out of it. So it was only natural that his eyes were drawn to Tora, his subconscious always seeking him out like a homing pigeon.
When they had separated after high school, that was the toughest thing for Fukunaga to swallow: that he wouldn't get to seek Tora out again. But it was fine! They were advancing their lives, going on to bigger and better things! Even if he turned around every time someone laughed raucously as if on instinct. Even if he spent his time absentmindedly scanning crowds, his heart speeding up when he saw a blond mohawk, only to drop when he realised it wasn't the one he was looking for. And it would only truly hit him how much he missed Tora when the boy-now-turned-man drunkenly called him once and wailed incomprehensibly down the phone. One thing Fukunaga took from it was this: Tora was missing him, too.
That was the tipping point. Incessant texts quickly became long video calls which became too much money on transportation which became a matching pair of house keys which became two gold rings. And with them, Fukunaga realised he could never take his eyes off Tora, though he wouldn't ever want to. Because these were his favourite observations, the ones he never wanted to forget: Tora dancing around the kitchen in a frilly, pink apron; Tora laughing loudly in the supermarket; Tora watching TV on their couch; Tora's drooling face in the mornings; and, Tora's eyes staring back into his before they slept at night.
Like now.
"What are you thinking about?" Tora whispers, lazily drawing shapes on the leg Fukunaga had thrown over his hip.
Fukunaga smiles, raising a hand to trace the curve of the side of Tora's face before resting it in a caress of his cheek. He rolled his thumb lightly over Tora's bottom lip, eyes flicking down to it.
Tora can only smile and say, "Gotcha."
He shifts to close the gap between them, kissing Fukunaga softly and Fukunaga's eyes flutter shut.
Home.

tried to publish Pride & Hysterics (fukutora fic) and ao3 crashed - the love of an idiot and a comedian was too much for the site to handle, god do I understand
fukutora and kurooyakukai for the ship game!!
The ship game
Fukutora
God this is so hard. It compels me for sure (more and more recently thanks to @anoant-haikyuu-dump lol). I'm gonna say it makes no sense đ but HEAR ME OUT
I think it makes no sense in that no one would have expected them to be together - and it's not a ship id ever really thought of until recently. they're very different temperaments and we get a lot more focus on toras relationship with kenma than fukunaga, even though they're also very different and clearly clashed a bit in first year before Tora grew to respect shohei. But I think that's what compels me so much!! There's that little snippet in the manga where Tora thinks about how strong and "manly" fukunaga is even though it's in a completely different way to HIS kind of strength. I think it's lovely to explore that genuine respect and admiration and how they could grow close in a way that surprises themselves as much as other people đ¤đ¤đ¤

Kurooyakukai
Graaahh I'm gonna say it makes sense but it does not compel me đ
It makes sense!! They're the three Nekoma third years and have such a good balanced dynamic between the trio, admiring and respecting each other even as kuroyaku butt heads. I love kuroyaku but it does not really compel me too add Kai into the romantic relationship. Maybe because kuroyaku is a more volatile bickering rivalry kind of dynamic, and Kai just isn't a part of that instead being outside it as peacekeeper. At least in my mind. I prefer him having his own thing going on (in my heart he's the first of the Nekoma team to get married) and dealing with his dumb bickering friends who can't admit that they're into each other.
Timeskip fukutora ramblings based on this post I made a few weeks ago:
To save money they cut each other's hair at home. Tora's is easy, especially since he stopped bleaching the mohawk after highschool, but Fukunaga's is more of a challenge. One time Tora cuts it so poorly that it's a borderline-bowl cut, just awful. To make matters worse this happens right before one of Fukunaga's stand-up shows. Instead of getting pissy Fukunaga embraces the situation and incorporates it into his set, which ends up being a hit with the audience. Despite that Tora's still apologizing for weeks.
Since Fukunaga's not a big talker (with the exception of when he's on stage) he brings an assortment of instruments and noisemakers to cheer for Tora at his volleyball games. Cowbells, airhorns, thundersticks, hand clappers, drums, maracas, a kazoo, you name it. The rest of the teamâunaware that he's Tora's partnerâare always pointing him out as the crazy guy in the stands with a one-man-band. Tora's both mortified and deeply endeared by it.
The first time Kenma visits their apartment he's horrifed by how scuffed it isâcardboard boxes everywhere, a severe lack of furniture, no utensils expect for two pairs of take-out chopsticks?? At this point he's already making bank off streaming so he orders them a bunch of stuff without asking ("Seriously guys, you've been living here for however-many months and don't have a kitchen table??" "We like to eat on the floor.")
Fukunaga works part-time at a hibachi restaurant and sometimes Tora swings by just to talk to him. He usually stays way too long and ends up getting kicked out; the only reason he's not fully-banned is cause he orders a shit ton of meat every time he visits.
Later on when they're both relatively successful Tora's teammates find out he's dating someone and bother him endlessly about introducing them. When he finally caves and brings Fukunaga along for after-practice drinks they're all like "That. That's Shohei Fukunaga. The famous comedian. WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US YOU'RE DATING A LITERAL CELEBRITY." Tora genuinely had no idea that Fukunaga was that well-known since he's so normal to him
