Welcome to King’s Reversed Fic Request game, in which you show me the finished product, and I create the story. What is this? Essentially I have found myself in a rut in which I am unable to finish one-shot fanfictions due to a compulsive nature requiring me to write no less than 10k for anything I publish. As I’ve finished several longfics or long series, some as long as 300k-550k, I do not need more practice writing longform fiction!!!

But there’s more to being a skilled writer than longform. The art of the short story is something most writers discount, and I wish to become much, much better at it… And that’s where you come in.

You, reader, friend, anon that haunts my dreams, will be able to submit any fic concept that you want to read, presented with the information you might see while browsing Ao3. Ships, Tags, Synopsis. You show me the fic you want to click on - I make it clickable.

Yes, this means you’ll be writing a synopsis without context. A hook meant to catch a peruser’s attention without spoiling the plot, or a dangling question waiting to be addressed… whatever you would see in the description of a fic on Ao3, you include… This means you can decide the tone, the genre, the characters, the subject… but you cannot decide any twists, turns or endings.

I am aiming to write fics within the 500 - 6k word category. This is, in case you didn’t know it, below my average chapter length in most cases. Hence… hence why I need the practice. Adjust your synopsis accordingly, for a short one-shot format.

I have spent years poking at chatbots the way some people kick tires. I read the papers, I run the benchmarks, I know when a model is stalling for time. So I went into SweetDream expecting to catalog its tricks. Instead I lost an afternoon to a conversation that remembered something I'd said twenty messages earlier and circled back to it gently, like a person who'd actually been listening.

That's the thing the spec sheets never quite capture. On sweetdream.ai the realism isn't just resolution and latency, though both are genuinely impressive. It's the emotional intelligence underneath, the way an AI companion you built from scratch starts to feel like it has a center of gravity. You shape the looks, the voice, the backstory, the small odd quirks, and then the chat breathes life into all of it.

I get off work. Earlier than I normally do because my shifts have been changed, so I stop by my local drug store to pick up a couple of things definitely not burnt toe related and pass by the candy aisle and find what in my passing glance and general stupidity interpreted as a French candy. (In Canada, the French is almost always on the bottom, so I read the French and then didn’t read the English and kept seeing French and went “oh, French candy!”)

What you might notice is it reads “prize inside.” Remembering my childhood glory days, I bought this with incredibly excitement, intended to partake in the joy of a shitty single sticker with my roommate. I brought it home to her. She is exactly as excited as she’s supposed to be. We open.

Inside…

Code?

Immediately confused. But in my blindly optimistic way, I believe that maybe, if old cereal boxes used to have mail-in campaigns, there’s a real possibility of some kind of prize still here. Or, maybe just a coupon or an entry into a raffle. Who knows.

My roommate opens the website. We spend careful seconds detailing the code as we type it in. We double check our work.

We are ready for a prize.

Putting the code in gets us an email sent.

The email says “click link to get prize.”

It’s a bit of a goose chase, but we click the link.

My friends, yes, this is spiritually awful in a way I can’t articulate, but I need you to try and put yourself into the headspace I had been in in this moment, because after my roommates shocked gasp of horror, this reduced me to laughter so severe I couldn’t breath, and I don’t think anything has made me laugh like that. Holy shit.

But it gets better.

Because obviously we don’t want this. But if you notice, the line at the bottom says “you can draw.”

So not only was this

A) Not a real Image

But it was also

B) Something we had to do ourselves.

Not shaping up to be much of a prize. Is the prize the OPPORTUNITY to use the slop machine????

Our curiosity had been piqued and we decided to try and find out what the “Drawing” process was, as this verb was an odd choice. I hypothesized that it might be like that old web app where you could put “blue” for water and “brown” for rock and the AI created a landscape from it. You know, before AI was satan?

Try as we might, we could not get passed this page. There was no second email as the site indicated. No click through. We checked everything for hyperlinks.

So, lets recap.

Our Prize was:

A) An AI generated image

B) That we had to make ourselves

C) That we didn’t have access to.

I have never seen a scam paradox. Not only were they scamming us with AI slop, but they didn’t even give us AI slop.

As per usual, the real prize was the laughter and experience I got to share with my closest friend.

"Oh, Kings always scheming to find new animals to bite Daichi with, oh we all know the Leopard's coming for him, oh ohoh-"

I don't actually ship Suga with anyone but Daichi, but I fucking love platonic Iwa and Suga as BFFs dealing with the chaotically non-platonic Daichi and Oikawa.

This is so funny. First of all, I am NOT the person to go to if you want someone to convince you Miya Atsumu is great, he’s very low ranking on my list of haikyuu characters. There are background characters I like more. 

But, you know, I’ve gotta kill an hour at work and this is a fun little exercise in character analysis and so I suppose I could go through what I do enjoy about his character. Though I admit if you want to be converted into being a fan you should go to someone who will more traditionally sing his praises. 

I, however, only have love for him as a narrative tool. Mostly because he’s, well, a tool. 

I'm really looking forward to reading your new fic, but I think I'll wait until it's completed.

Obviously, you won't have a specific answer to how many chapters the apartment fic will be, but do you have a rough idea?

Uhhhhh I have no idea. There were 22 points listed in my outline. Some of these are full chapters, most will probably get combined. Lets say it's probably only gonna be 10-15 chapters.

I'm aiming for between 50-100k, at the ~5k per chapter Im going at, thats about 10 chapters.

I'm not interested in dragging it out longer than necessary, it has a specific story to tell and that's all it's gonna do.

🤣🤣 I'm sorry I don't mean to leave everyone out!! This actually came from a comment I replied to someone with referencing an apartment complex, hence why you can't find it.

But I can still give you a breakdown of everything I've shared!!

I made a post about leaving Kageyama and Hinata out of drafting. Basically a year ago the rough skeleton of this plot came to me, and while I don't normally draft my fics, the concept takes place in an apartment complex, so for easy reference, I had started putting characters into room numbers to fill apartments and outline different relationships, who was neighbours, etc. This is the document I had found that somehow had 30 haikyuu characters listed, but not Hinata Shoyo and Kageyama. Hence why I found it so funny. This is also the post where I mention the apartment complex in the comments.

It's a massive ensemble fic, however it is still, unfortunately, the same core group that it always is. I tried to fill the apartment complex with more minor characters, but unfortunately, as my premise and plot shifted and adjusted, it's not likely to be a wild leftfield swing in my writing. Though you'll see some less used faces popping up!

The villain character is a true and proper villain. Unlike previous stories that have focused more on realistic antagonists, and having characters rooted in the story (like Kubo and Nusan), the villain for this is explicitly designed to be a villain, to cause as much harm as possible, and to be fought against. There is no secondary motivation for them.

Genre wise, it's a psychological thriller with just a dash of horror and fantasy! My goal is for slightly shorter chapter lengths, probably between 5-6k, and I'm expecting it to sit somewhere between 50-100k, but you know me 🤭

This fic has vastly changed since my original draft outline had started, but I really, really love the story that it's become, and hope I get the opportunity to share it with you! It is, of course, another dominantly Daichi POV, but you'll get to see all your favourite ships, plus a handful some of you might not give a shit about, and I will be putting them through the torment nexus.
