Okay okay so the way I see it is that they become like BFFs first completely by accident and Kogane is stuck in horrible pining unrequited hell for like 3 years.

They first develop a friendship as volleyball athletes, training together to help each other improve because Kogane REALLY needs help with the fundamentals and Goshki is so close to being considered a prodigy, if he could just get a little better... So they start meeting up on weekend because they're both driven to be better and at first its all just for volleyball and it has to be at Date Tech's field bc Goshiki doesnt want STZ to know he's talking to "the enemy" but as they meet up they develop like a real and good friendship and Goshiki realizes he doesn't really have a lot of that at STZ, like he's not close to his roommate/s and struggles to really connect to his upperclassmen so Kogane fills the friend role so much better and they start talking about pokemon and skyrim and sneakers and other teenage boy shit and they kinda forget it's supposed to be about volleyball and as Goshiki gets more and more invested in this friendship Kogane is absolutely SWEPT and simply cannot stop falling in love. And it kinda goes on like this for a while, as the become absolutely irrevocably best friends even into their third year and Kogane keeps expecting to have an opportunity to admit how he feels but Goshiki is SO caught up in being the ace of this team and living up to Ushijima's legacy so Kogane decides to step back and says he's gonna do it after graduation so as to not distract him at all BUT graduation is crazy and Goshiki has so much ambition and probably pushes Kogane to go pro and helps him get the confidence needed to try out for the Frogs and then things just... Spiral out of control, and suddenly they're on different teams in different cities and Kogane suddenly realizes that he hardcore missed his opportunity? 3 years of the most important friendship of his life and suddenly they're only texting every two days and don't live in the same city and he never even got the opportunity to tell him how he feels? Did he really just waste 3 years of his life considering it and never actually did? Anyway I think Kogane has some kind of mental breakdown like halfway through their first year of university and drives through the night to show up where Goshiki was living to give some grand romantic gesture and probably just kisses him as soon as he answers the door and then apologizes because he's been holding that in for the last 3 years and Goshiki is genuinely shocked and surprised but just grabs him by the collar and drags him inside.

Anyway it’s a short chapter. I was trying to establish the baseline for the opening to the story. It does feel a bit lacking but maybe that’s just my harsh criticism of myself talking.
