“Hate is a strong word, little one.”
The human woman made a noise Fuegan had started to associate with malcontent and held out her arms so he would carry her over the cracks in the stones she couldn’t jump herself.
“They’re ignorant.”
“Weren’t you ignorant once? And you created a chaos god.”
The Eldar snorted, his laughter sounding like dry kindling.
“We learned. We were forced to learn, but we did. We don’t lie to our children.”
He put her down, careful. She broke easily, the human, like all unaugmented of her race did, and he was a lump of armour.
“But no, I don’t hate the Astartes. I pity them.”
The girl laughed, her laughter forced and choked and disparaging.
“Why? Because they don’t know better? You’re too kind to them, dragon.”
“They made you suffer?”
The girl snorted and turned away, continuing to walk.
“If you give me names…”
“It’s not singular names, Fuegan.”
She still pronounced his name weirdly. He didn’t mind. He knew many of his shrine siblings would, and his shrine father would teach her how to speak their language. He didn’t mind. She couldn’t pronounce the combination between u and e correctly. Even after repeating, the a sounded too long. It marked the difference between them. Reminded him that despite the fact that she curled against him for warmth in spite of his heavy armor, she was human. Not Eldar.
His shrine father wouldn’t have minded. But Fuegan was his own person, as much as he was a person.
He’d also, he admitted to himself, would’ve killed any space marines she would’ve named.
“They think they’re righteous.”
“Not to that extend. Why are you defending them?”
“My race sees yours as ignorant children. Seeing how young space marines are taken, the feeling is stronger.”
“We genocide your people.”
“You wouldn’t beat someone who’s only been on the path of the poet for their entire life, so do not talk about a “we”, muri’vee.”
She made an angry noise, either at the statement or at the nickname she still hadn’t figured out how to ask him for.
“Why do you hate the space marines?”
She stared at him, and then just shook her head, gripping her borrowed shuriken pistol tighter.
