One of the major things people seem to miss when discussing any issue of inequality in society, be it gender, racial, sexual orientation, ect., is that it is not just the victims of discrimination and oppression that suffer from said discrimination and oppression. As long as part of a society is being harmed, it is harmful to the whole society. Taking the patriarchy as an example- the patriarchy is directly harmful to women, but women are not a separate entity outside of society. They are a part of society. About fifty percent, give or take a few, in fact. So when people claim that men shouldn't care about women's issues, there's a problem. A big problem. A lake may not consist entirely of pollutants, but pollutants damage the entire ecosystem. When a part of society suffers, all of society suffers. As long as there is one person being discriminated against for their gender, their sexuality, their race, ect., it is not the victim's problem- it's every single member of a society's problem, as it is society that is allowing the conditions that allow discrimination to exist in the first place, and that victim is part of said society. Equality is, by its very definition, a two-way street. By helping others, we are helping ourselves- "ourselves" not being a demographic, but us, as human beings, as one world, one species, one loose conglomeration of stupid little apes crawling around on a chunk of rock. This... This little planet is the best we've got. So let's work to improve it together. All of us.
