I finally had a chance to visit Memorial Park in downtown Monroe, Michigan, and see "Michigan's Tribute to Kentucky," as the War of 1812 monument is titled. The park commemorates the Kentucky militia who lost their lives at the Battle of the River Raisin and in the massacre of wounded prisoners that followed.
"Remember the Raisin!" became a rallying cry for revenge, and Kentucky troops heading into Ontario in 1813 passed through Frenchtown (modern-day Monroe). The bleached, unburied bones of the fallen were still in the fields.
From the 1816 memoir of Captain Robert Breckinridge McAfee, who found Frenchtown deserted en route to the Battle of the Thames:
The bones of the massacred Kentuckians were scattered over the plains for three miles on this side of the river. The detachment which had visited that place under Colonel Johnson in June, had collected and buried a great many of them, but they were now torn up and scattered over the fields again. The sight had a powerful effect on the feelings of the men. The wounds inflicted by that barbarous transaction were again torn open. The bleaching bones still appealed to heaven, and called on Kentucky to avenge this outrage on humanity. (History of the Late War in the Western Country).
According to the sign in Memorial Park, some of these human remains were interred there. It was Richard Mentor Johnson and his men who apparently took the initiative (McAfee also served under Johnson).
