the us supreme court announced recently that they have a date set to consider voting on gay marriage, and if they do decide to vote on it later this year, that would mean marriage equality would most likely get left up to the states.

keep all queer couples in your prayers today. it’s a scary reality that our marriage rights could be up for debate again.

pray for queer couples in conservative states that would most likely deny same-sex marriage if given the chance.

pray for couples planning marriages and engagements now that are uncertain what may happen for them

pray for gay couples who have legal, medical, and financial situations in question if they are officially married as partners

pray for the queer community as a whole because this feels like it could be a very scary step backwards if it is to be voted to be left up to states.

and finally, pray for the supreme court that they may understand that this would be a major infringement of human and constitutional rights. they those on the court who wish to bring this subject to a vote may have their hearts changed, and if they do decide to bring it to a vote, that they will be moved to keep marriage equality for lgbtq couples.

In parts of central Europe, the custom on St. Thomas Day was to scare away demons and evil spirits with screeching, banging, howling, and fearful costumes, much as All Hallows' Eve was kept in Ireland.

Saint Thomas (December 21) was an apostle and one of the first disciples of Christ. Until 1969, his feast day was commemorated on the day of the winter solstice, which in the Old Bohemian national calendar marked the beginning of the real, so-called Saint Thomas winter. This fact also influenced the character of the feast in the popular environment.

It was a fateful day when the power of harmful forces culminated. In German villages, we are talking about one of the so-called “rough nights” or “Rauhnáchte ” coming in the period between the feasts of St. Andrew and the Three Kings. [Longest night of the year, wild hunt, etc.]

The customs and traditions associated with St. Thomas’ Night are usually repeated during the important feasts of the Advent and Christmas cycles. We are talking, for example, about throwing a shoe or the importance attached to dreams on this night.

Reports of St. Thomas’ customs in the Znojmo region come mainly from German villages. Here too, the night before St. Thomas’s was one of the most terrible. People protected themselves from harmful forces by shooting pistols in the streets, and all rooms in the house were fumigated with incense. In order not to disturb the night spirits and bring misfortune to the inhabitants of the house, the housewife was not allowed to leave laundry hanging on the clothesline overnight.

Similar customs were repeated on Christmas Eve, in New Year's Eve and before the feast of the Three Kings. Thomas' Night was also considered magical in Lower Austria. It was awaited primarily by local girls who were eager to find out who they would marry in the near future.

However, even in the Czech environment of Horáček and Podhoráček, this significant milestone of the year did not completely escape the attention of the people. In Ždár, for example, girls sowed seeds under the headboard of their beds. While doing so, they said: "Saint Thomas, I sow your seed, tell me the truth, whom I will get! The person they dreamed about at night was the one they were to marry and have many children with.

St. Thomas police say an individual attended police headquarters late Sunday night or early Monday morning and committed what they’re calling a “festive act of mischief.”

The person of interest proceeded to hang Christmas lights across the property in what police say appeared to be an attempt to spread holiday cheer without prior authorization.

While officers appreciate the spirit of the season, “we take unauthorized decorating very seriously.”
