the ‘cry to me’ dance/love scene is so good, but the moment with Baby moving around Johnny and slowly letting her hand drift over his ass is just so damn good.

My pal Katie West (@therealkatiewest), the babely mastermind behind @fictionandfeeling, is currently funding a new book called Better Than IRL over on Kickstarter. You’ve got four days left to snag a copy, but that’s not why I’m writing this post.
The book is a collection of essays about finding your community on the untamed Internet, and supporting it so far has gotten me thinking a lot about the spaces that shaped me and my creative career. SO LET’S GO ON A JOURNEY OF NOSTALGIA TOGETHER.
Being a teenager on DeviantArt in 2003 was heady and bizarre. I posted a lot of not very good art and obsessively followed a lot of amazing people who seemed as gods by comparison. Here’s a snapshot of what I was up to.
This is seriously how I talked online in 2003. I don’t know what to tell you.
I followed folks who were going to art school and patiently answered my questions about what that was like. I saw women working in animation, launching webcomics, and sharing fan art. It opened up enormous vistas of possibility for what I wanted to be doing with my life.
Before then I’d just been downloading fantasy illustrations off Elfwood and copying them into my sketchbook without too much community interaction.
But then I got into FURCADIA.
Furcadia was an online community of folks who all ran around this pixel-art landscape in various fantastical animal avatars. I spent a lot of time arranging throw cushions by color and talking with other weirdos. It was a hugely formative and kind space.
Also I spent so much time obsessing over this character customization screen. So much.
It also led to the first commission I ever paid for: an illustration of my character. HOW did I pay for it back then? No idea. PayPal wasn’t an option for me. Maybe I mailed a check??? Anyway, the original illustration is lost, but this icon survives.
Karia, my sweet baby girl 😭 (If, by some miracle, you drew this...GET IN TOUCH???)
Anyway, I grew up in a small town and I absolutely would not be the person I am today without the influence of the internet during my early years. I mean, if you’d told this awkward goofball she’d be making a living off drawing comics fifteen years later she would’ve FLIPPED.
So this is all a roundabout way of saying please do go support Better Than IRL, because I think talking about how these spaces shape us is more than just indulgence. It gives us a path forward for shaping communities to come, and making sure that we can keep opening folks up to new ways of connecting and making creative stuff happen in the world.
GO BACK THIS BOOK, YO.

my last post was entirely prompted by the realization (thanks @dollsome-does-tumblr) that as uprooted’s the dragon|sarkan is definitely at least inspired by severus snape, it tracks that agnieszka/sarkan is absolutely sinistra/snape and I am overjoyed by this discovery :D my thesis is supported by the times sarkan looks at agnieszka and wonderingly calls her a lunatic before kissing her.
since I’m now thinking about redwall, I think the first ship I invested in that ended the most tragically was not, in fact, jo x laurie but actually martin the warrior x rose

i saw @callunavulgari do it and wanted to give it a shot.
So I just went and saw T2: Trainspotting, and there is a scene where the one (one, uno, ras, das eine, Bechdel, bla bla, u know how it is) girl was looking at Renton and Sick Boy while they yelled about whatever together, being their terrible selves, being friends, the best of friends, vibing with each other, displaying that intense connection that stirs something in you, they were going on and on and suddenly she starts talking in Bulgarian, a language the characters do not speak nor understand, but not over them, not to them, just kinda against that wall of pent up emotion from those two men seeing each other again after so long, theyre being extremely physical, not even noticing her talking, and her rhythm is drastically different from theirs, an observer, a commentator, sorta positioning herself more with the viewer outside than a viewer within, and asode from some other shit she goes “I think you guys just honestly love each other and you should get naked and fuck” and they all laugh and clink glasses, not knowing what she ever said, and it was the most unoffensive fanservice, acknowledgement and subtle sorta meta fourth wall break I have seen in many years, but then, I was conditioned by SPN, so my standards are awfully low, what do I know
