There was a stranger in the nursery.
FĂ«anĂĄro stood in the doorway hands clenched at his sides. He couldnât see much of him, save that he was tall and dressed in a worn dark cloak that hung down to the floor. He smelt like blood. Every part of his being screamed danger, an inconvenient affliction that left little room to bring to mind what else to do. Little Nelya cried out and his heart went to leap from his chest. He surged forward ready to raise hell.
âDonât.â
The strangerâs voice came out like a growl as he turned. FĂ«anĂĄro had never been not one to be told what to do but his voice caught in his throat. There was a stranger in the nursery and he had his son in his arms. The baby looked tiny against his chest. He babbled softly grabbing at the intruderâs thin graying hair.
Ravenwing ducked into the medicine den as his Clanmates continued to cheer his new name. Fireheart and Graystripe remained in ThunderClanâs clearing, soaking in their Clanmateâs praise and attention. Ravenwing had never been one for the spotlight. Besides, Fireheart and Graystripe deserved this moment.
The smell of blood brought him back to the medicine den. Normally, the odd smell of various herbs clung heavily to the air, but despite Redtail and Spottedleafâs bodies already on their way to be buried, the bitter scent of their spilled blood now permeated the den.
What a tragedy for the Clan. To loose both deputy and medicine cat in one moment was a hard blow to ThunderClan. At first, the Clan had assumed Yellowfang had taken their lives, but it was soon concluded that it had in fact, been Clawface of ShadowClanâs doing.Â
However, Ravenwing noticed something. The gray clumps of fur scattered around the den were the same shade of dark gray as Yellowfangâs pelt, not Clawfaceâs light gray fur. Ravenwing bent over the nearest clump to give it a gentle sniff. It sure smelled like Yellowfang too. There was something else though. Another scent. A very familiar scent. Tigerclaw!
His green eyes widening, Ravenwing approached another wad of fur. Tigerclawâs scent also clung to it. Subtly mixing with Yellowfangâs. Looking at the size and arrangement of the stray fur, Ravenwing also realized this wasnât the scene of a fight, but of a cat deliberately spreading around another catâs fur. Almost like they were trying to frame that cat.Â
Ravenwing padded over to where Redtailâs body had been found. Underneath the deceased deputyâs scent, Tigerclawâs pooled. The young warrior could imagine it now.Â
During the chaos of the battle, Tigerclaw must have snuck into the den and killed Redtail, who was too weak from injuries to fight back, then Spottedleaf, not wanting to leave any witnesses or have his treachery discovered. Then, while the Clan mourned Lionheart, Rosetail, and Lynxkit, he would have found enough shed fur from Yellowfang to scatter into the den, making it look like sheâd been the killer.
Luckily for her, Clawface took the blame instead, but that didnât make Ravenwing feel much better. In the end, it didnât matter that Tigerclaw had failed to frame Yellowfang, because heâd still succeeded in killing his own deputy and medicine cat without drawing suspicion to himself. Ravenwing shivered.
Oh StarClan! And now heâs deputy! I have to warn Bluestar! He thought fearfully. Turning sharply to exit the den, the young warriorâs heart lurched as he came face to face with the new deputy himself. Tigerclaw glowered coldly at his former apprentice, his pale amber gaze studying the young gib with the same intensity one would study prey.
âRavenwing, you didnât stay long after the ceremony,â Tigerclaw said coolly. Ravenwing flattened his ears as he fought to swallow the hard lump that had suddenly caught in his throat. The older tom sensed his nervousness, acknowledging it with a flick of his tail. âI wanted to congratulate my former apprentice in person.â
Something told Ravenwing that wasnât true. Tigerclaw had always been hard to please, much less get praise from. Besides, his body language didnât read as a mentor warmly greeting his apprentice. In fact, a little voice warned Ravenwing that if he didnât out of there fast, he would be Tigerclawâs next victim. There was no quick escape though. The deputy had him cornered like a rabbit in its burrow.
âWhatâs the matter, young warrior?â Tigerclaw questioned accusingly. âHiding something?â Ravenwing flinched and quickly shook his head. âN-no, Tigerclaw! I w-was j-j-just cleaning up th-the medicine den!â He managed to stutter out. The two cats held each otherâs gaze for a few moments, before Tigerclawâs drifted to the mess still behind Ravenwing. When he looked at Ravenwing again, his pupils were narrowed.
âReally? Then why, do tell, is there still fur scattered everywhere?â Ravenwing tensed. Tigerclaw took the opportunity to lean in closer until his breath tickled the fur inside Ravenwingâs ear. âCareful, Ravenwing. Cats might think you had something to do with this.â
Leaning back, Tigerclaw eyed Ravenwing one last time before turning to exit the den. It wasnât until the tabby tom had disappeared from view completely that Ravenwing finally collapsed to the ground, taking in deep gulps of air. He hadnât realized heâd been holding his breath the entire time. Despite Tigerclawâs departure, fear still clawed at Ravenwingâs belly. Tigerclaw knew heâd figured out Redtail and Spottedleafâs real murderer, and Ravenwing wasnât too positive that Tigerclaw would let him live with that information.

He ought not have been surprised the second time. Try as he might, he never could forget the spectre from his sonâs future, if indeed thatâs what it was. Little Nelyafinwe grew up and up. FĂ«anĂĄro watched for any sign of the dark spirit heâd seen within him but could find no trace.
And then his second came, Kanafinwë who demanded attention from the moment uttered his first breath. Ever he had something to say and was determined that all of Elvenesse would hear him. Telperion was waning when he entered the nursery. He smiled as he rescued the poor nurse from her night long vigil, trying to coax the baby to sleep.
Kanafinwë stared up at him, round eyes wide open as he lifted him up into his arms. He heeded no scolding, only giggled as Fëanor sang and spoke to him in hushed tones of his newest projects. But Fëanåro was in a fair mood and happily indulged the boy, as he settled them both down in the rocking chair.
The first he noticed of it was the cold.

It is said the Fëanor never shared any designs for the making of the Silmarils. This is not entirely true, upon a rainy afternoon in the great forge hidden somewhere in the depth of Formenos he went through all his early prototypes with his namesake.
CurufinwĂ«, however, was barely two and so would have been little help to any who asked, if he remembered the occasion at all. He listened half-heartedly, ever so often turning his attention to the colour bricks and gems set out to entrain him, but FĂ«anĂĄro didnât mind.
â - that way if I am ever far away youâll always have a part of me near.â He finished, ink stained fingers ghosting of the pages.
CurufinwĂ« squeals and waves his wooden hammer, uncomprehending but excited. FĂ«anĂĄroâs own smile was strained but warm and he ruffled the babyâs hair before returning to his schematics. The calculationâs were incomplete and there would without a doubt be complications once he actually got onto shaping the things, but it was clear starting point at the very least.
A silence fell across the room and drew on long enough that FĂ«anaro looked back at the child. Little Curvoâs eyes were fixed on something behind him. It was that time then.
Foresight Dark.

He didnât know what to expect for the fourth. He took ArafinwĂ«âs remedies and prayed. Nerdanel says heâs hovered but he could not tell her why. Such conversations would lead to more advice he has no interest in heeding. Itâs hardly necessary at any rate, MorifinwĂ« has three older brothers who dote on him and a mother and grandfather who adore him. The chance he was ever alone was slim at best.
So the boy turned one and then two and FĂ«anĂĄro got complacent. When he walked into the nursery one evening and saw a dark haired ellon standing over the bed he didnât rush over. MakalaurĂ« was one of the few who could quiet down Moryo when he was in a mood like this.
But he wasnât singing. He spoke softly, using words FĂ«anĂĄro couldnât understand. Moryo looked at him, brow furrowed and listening intently. The child didnât speak much though it worried Nerdanel a good deal more than him. He had been the same and no one would ever call him short on words.
The elfâs smile fell as he entered.
âWhat do you want?â
Foresight Strength.

Heâs unsure exactly what woke him in the dark of night. He didnât watch over Tyelkormo when he slept. The phantoms always come under the shimmering glow of Telerperion, when no one else is there to witness them. So he had left Nerdanel and some of her handmaidens to the few hours of the day where the boy actually rested.
But this time he woke with a prickling in his stomach and couldnât even think to rouse Nerdanel as he slipped out of bed. He stalked down the corridor as quiet as he could manage until he reached the nursery door. It was just slightly ajar, a long beam fireligot peering through the crack.
Inside he could see the figure silhouetted against the warm light of the dying embers. His back was turned to him but he could see his hands running along the carvings of the mantle piece. Sharpened nails squealed as they dragged along the wood, the sound causing the baby to stir in his sleep. The visitorâs head tilted just slightly to the side as he turned to look.
FĂ«anĂĄro knew he should go into the room but his limbs felt stiff and unwieldy. He breath came out in short bursts but he didnât know why. The elf had done nothing after all.
