He didnât know what to expect for the fourth. He took ArafinwĂ«âs remedies and prayed. Nerdanel says heâs hovered but he could not tell her why. Such conversations would lead to more advice he has no interest in heeding. Itâs hardly necessary at any rate, MorifinwĂ« has three older brothers who dote on him and a mother and grandfather who adore him. The chance he was ever alone was slim at best.
So the boy turned one and then two and FĂ«anĂĄro got complacent. When he walked into the nursery one evening and saw a dark haired ellon standing over the bed he didnât rush over. MakalaurĂ« was one of the few who could quiet down Moryo when he was in a mood like this.
But he wasnât singing. He spoke softly, using words FĂ«anĂĄro couldnât understand. Moryo looked at him, brow furrowed and listening intently. The child didnât speak much though it worried Nerdanel a good deal more than him. He had been the same and no one would ever call him short on words.
The elfâs smile fell as he entered.
âWhat do you want?â
He doesnât even look up, though his hand tightened around the side of the crib.
Dread pools in his stomach, he spoke as steadily as he could, âTo check on my son.â
He scoffed and FĂ«anĂĄro is surprised how much it stung. Dark eyes, sharp and piercing flick up and regard him with cool disinterest. He canât help feel small under his gaze. His lips twist into a scowl and he stalked over to the fireplace. Though he cuts a far slighter figure than the one before FĂ«anĂĄro canât stop his heart from racing.
âIs this a dream? Am I dead?â
Fëanaro opens his mouth to speak but his words disappear like smoke.
âAi Valar, please, I must be dead.â
âMorifinwĂ«âŠâ
The elf chuckled and turned back, his face now shadowed. His clothes were smeared in blood and dirt but he could tell they were once white. There were gems sewn into the fabric the gave him shimmering and ever shifting silhouette leant on the mantle piece.
âAre you real?â The boy asked, he once again looked him up and down, poking his shoulder for good measure.
âI⊠yes?â
âYou look young, were you really so young?â
âMorifinwĂ«âŠâ a bit of ire leaking into his voice. Heâs doing in on purpose. Pelting him with questions so he canât get a word in. FĂ«anĂĄro can tell by the glint in his eye and a self-satisfied smirk far too similar to his own. He knew this game he could play it -
âDid you love us?â
His mind stuttered to a stop, âWhat?â
MorifinwĂ« shrugged and looked back down at he fireplace, âI canât remember anymore.â
He wasnât quite aware that he stepped forward until he felt of the fire. The face of his son is flushed from the heat of it. His fingers wrapped around his cold hands, thereâs blood on them also. Why was there always blood?
âMore than anything. How can you even ask such a thingâ
MorifinwĂ« twisted out of his grip, fast as a viper grabbing his own wrist and pulling him closer. This one too shall be taller than him, he thought grimly. Itâs terrifying how fast his expression shifted. There is an old fire burning in his eyes that kindles at the sight of him and he snarled.
âThen why did you die! Why did you leave us? Those were not your last words.â His voice rose with every word and the child in the crib behind whined. For a moment FĂ«anĂĄro watched him turn to his younger self, shooting him a rather unimpressed glare. To his surprise, the baby quietened down with a little pout.
âI - â FĂ«anĂĄro shook his head, this is enough, the boy didnât want an answer but he did, âWhat happened?â
Morifinwë barked a laugh and released him. He took a step back and shook his head. The boy seemed barely aware when Fëanåro reached out again and placed a hand on his arm.
âMoryo,â he pleaded, there was no time. They were never there long, âTell me, let me fix this.â
âNo.â
He looked surprised at his own answer. FĂ«anĂĄroâs heart sank when he saw his son look up and meet his eyes, for he could see the decision was made and he would not be swayed. He shook his head and shoved his fear back down his throat.
âThereâs no time, why wouldnât you - â
âIâm married.â
âStop.â
âI married an aftercomer. Her name was Haleth.â
âMorfinwĂ«, your brothers are downstairs, I have seen what will happen to them - â
âI never told anyone, you may as well know.â
âI⊠I am glad for you and shall be glad to meet her but - â
âYou wonât. But if I tell you, if you change - I may never meet her.â
âOh, MoryoâŠ.â
He chuckled and Fëanåro could scream. He is as mad as the others. He cannot save them, how can he save them?
âIâm a monster, you know.â
FĂ«anĂĄro grabbed his shoulders and shook him, âDo not say such things.â
Caranthir hissed back with just as much venom, âYou donât know what Iâve done, you donât know what Iâd do again for the singular bright summer of my entire life.â
âI love you, Carnister,â His heart spilled out of his chest without warning. He hadnât even realised how much his question had been gnawing at him until the words left his lips, âMore than anything. More than life. More than all the jewels of the the earth and works of my hands, you must - â
His son shoved him off like his touched burned him. FĂ«anĂĄro couldnât understand the look on his face but he hated it.
So thereâs like a general fandom headcanon that embroidery and needlework is Caranthirâs craft which I love and respect but Iâve also got this idea in my head of handy man Caranthir. Like particularly gadgets and things he doesnât make the stuff but he can take it apart and put it back together again really well.
Escpically Lord of Thargelion Caranthir. Early on before he learned normal people small talk he fell back on FĂ«anorian small talk which is essentially âhow does that thing you made workâ in all his diplomatic conversations. Incidentally this was perfectly acceptable small talk among his dwarvish acquaintances which is why he was able to establish such good relations with them.Â
But anyway it just meant that he understood dwarvish mechanics really well so like, if your dwarf-made thingumy broke youâd most likely run it past Lord Caranthir first because chance are heâll be able to fix it for you for considerable more âreasonableâ ratesÂ
