If you could change any parts of the books, what would you change and why? Do you think it would have been better for the Twilight Saga to actually well be a Saga? Like focusing on the covens, wars etc not just Bella and Edward and their love story.
Hmm. I mean yeah, that's why the Illustrated Guide was such a relief in a way—it finally got away from the main characters and delved into soooo many minor characters' backstories and gave us that feeling that this is a much bigger story with much bigger themes going on. Some of those themes were hinted at in the saga itself, but it was great to get a bird's eye view of vampire history. But such a book probably wouldn't make a great entry point into a universe; it's the intimacy of one romance, one family that draws people in.
If I could change something about the saga itself? Breezing past the easy answers like better editing, better sensitivity, less creepiness with the imprint, etc... my two biggest things would be 1. more glimpses into the larger picture and 2. more follow-through.
1. It would have been so easy to throw in a few more sound bites here and there—more mentions of people's backstories, more insights into the Cullen family dynamics and relationships, more references to vampire history and vampire social issues. The latter definitely improved as the saga went on and the Guide came out, at least.
2. Adding in more follow-through would have been a bit more difficult, since it tends to slow down the narrative pace, but come on. Edward and Bella never dealing with SO MANY things that happened between them. Bree never being mentioned again. Sam never weighing in on the red-eyed witnesses coming to town in BD. The evolution of Rosalie's relationship with Bella and mortality. Finding a way for Bella's love of cooking/caring for others to reincarnate itself. Edward supposedly letting go of his soul issue and his pessimism and neither being mentioned again. The Denalis turning on the Cullens in one book and everything's just fine later. Carlisle killing for the first time in his long life. The family recovering somehow from the deadly rift re: Bella's pregnancy. Letting the characters question the creepiness of the imprint a bit more, for both Jacob's sake and Renesmee's. The celebration at the end of BD being a bit overshadowed by the future danger. I'm not interested in AU consequences so much as I wish we had gotten to see the characters occasionally sit down and deal with it all. Make it healthy or stunted, I don't care, just let them talk about it!
Fanfic to the rescue.
