It was about midnight, and the city was as lively as ever. The beasts roamed the streets while the mortals stayed comfortable and warm in their double barricaded homes and apartments. While human children lay snug in their beds, the children of Cain run second-rate gambling circuits and prostitution rings, hoping to sucker some clowns into foolishly throwing their money to the monsters, thus funding their elicit behavior and further establishing a reign of chaos.
Law made it so; about six or seven years ago, after an overabundance of mutated beings began speaking out against oppression by the mortal majority, congress passed some bullshit laws to give the monsters fair reign over the night, leaving the humans a dominion over the daylight. Soon enough it began like clockwork. Beasts would come out of hiding, leaving their underground apartment complexes and monstrous ghettos, and would spend their time in the human world, collecting and making livings, just like any ordinary human, only slimier, furrier, and more grotesque in every sense of the word.
And then there's him; the between-walker himself, the champion of the sun and moon, and the most feared detective among human and beast alike. They called him the Walker, the Chain, and the Corrupt. But by birth, he's called Flint Rogers, and there isn't a man or woman alive who isn't knowledgeable to his rather hefty reputation. He's a cruel man with a particular disgust of the creatures that claim night, which, coincidentally, is his busiest period.
His office stood ever watchful of the citizens of the city, a large window faced one of the busiest streets, allowing a front row seat to the clean and corrupt. The dark of the office was only slightly affected by the dim desk lamp and the small, reddish light from a cigarette, held in the mouth of the Walker himself. He took a drag, ran his fingers through his hair, and let out a weary, bitter sigh. It was going to be a long night.
