The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald For English class, we were assigned a copy of The Great Gatsby, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of joy I felt, as Gatsby was on my list of books to pick up on my next trip to the bookshop. Of course I loved every minute of it, Fitzgerald was able to use very poetic language throughout the novel, that made me wish I could spend every minute to whip up a beauty like Gatsby. The Great Gatsby, set in the Roaring 20’s or the Jazz Age, is the all American love story featuring all the elements of a wild party, something for the rich to enjoy. Nick Carraway tells us the story of his summer in New York. Moving into a small cottage located right next to Gatsby, famous for his endless and extravagant parties. Nick is also across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom. We learn that Gatsby is on a quest to win back Daisy from a love they shared 5 years ago. Gatsby believes to do so he must prove his wealth. The story depicts the groups scandalous summer adventures this includes Nick and Jordan Baker’s affair. The end of the summer presents the story’s tragedy, a car accident Daisy caused in which Gatsby takes the fall for. From there everything unraveled quite quickly. Of course, having read this for English, my class is in the middle of analyzing every detail of Gatsby’s life. I’ve watched a couple documentaries on Gatsby, including John Green’s Crash Corse videos and I’m set to watch the movie over the weekend. I have previously seen the movie, back when it was in theaters, and Baz Luhrmann did not disappoint. As much as I argue that the book is always better, watching the movie first did help picture the setting for me, as my friend commented that the first time they read the novel they had trouble seeing the story being set in New York. Also having an idea of the plot helped me to focus in on the characters while reading. Many say that they don’t like the characters in the novel, and I’d agree, right away I found a dislike for Tom, I felt annoyed by Gatsby and his childish demands, but as for Daisy, who is designed to be hated, I mostly felt bad for her. She was stuck married to a man who was unfaithful to her and I think that is where my sympathy steams from. As for Nick, who represents us, a crowd of observers, he seems like a pretty passive guy and does the job of telling the story in a mystical way, giving the audience a sliver of hope at the end to carry on despite what the tide throws you. I feel that anyone who loves a good story would be missing out by not reading this novel, so ya know, go get yourself a copy. I mean what flaws can you find in a classic like this?
