cloud watched from a distance, dragging a cloth over the worn buster sword sprawled across his crossed legs while the girls seemed to be giggling with you about something he couldn't entirely discern.
it wasn't exactly the first he'd seen you like this- interacting came quite easily between you and the friends you share. sure, there was a little shyness that lingered with some of the newcomers to your party, such as vincent and cid.. but you seemed to be more capable of conversing with them than you were with him- who'd known you for quite a decent amount of time already.
was there something about him that made you uncomfortable? had he simply acted too coldly upon first meeting that it warded you off for good? the blond wasn't entirely sure to say, but he couldn't help but feel some semblance of envy festering in his gut.
practically everyone had the pleasure of being spoken to quite freely by you, and on the instances that conversation was engaged between the two of you.. it often either ended with your abrupt retreat, or something would come up; typically in the form of monsters or shinra.
needless to say, he attempted to suppress the many questions he had for you, putting his focus back on polishing his weapon until it would be needed next. with sephiroth lurking around the world, he had to be ready to take him down, lest he wanted the planet to willingly be brought to its knees.
which he definitely did not want to be responsible for.
the giggles and whispers seemed to become more prominent, even as cloud attempted to filter them out for the sake of respecting his friends' privacy. just what were they going on about over there? would it be an issue if he walked up right now to satiate his curiosity and find out what the joke had been? or would they just quiet down the minute he walked over, as though the moment might be shattered by his intrusion?
he wondered what zack might have done in this instance- he was.. always better with this kind of thing, anyway. getting along with people came easily to him- everyone gravitated towards his charisma, even sephiroth seemed to, before it all went wrong.
deeming that his blade was in good enough condition, he slotted it onto his back once more, its weight familiar, and comforting. a reminder that his friend was still with him, possibly as some sort of wingman to all of this. because, real talk, he probably would have dragged him over to your little group the minute laughter reached his ears.
which felt like enough of a reason to muster the courage and do so on his behalf. tifa, aerith and yuffie were his friends, as were you- even if that relationship was not entirely mutual ( at least, according to his current perception ), so it shouldn't be a crime to walk up to you all.

"oh!! he's coming over!" tifa whisper-yelled, earning a sigh of relief from yuffie as she nudged you forward.

"weird me out about what?" cloud cut in, tilting his head with an arched brow as he watched you jump back towards tifa, reminiscent of a frightened cat. truthfully, not the most unusual reaction he'd gotten out of you, but there was a lingering confusion nonetheless of what could have triggered it. was it his sudden arrival? his overall presence?
a glance was exchanged between the girls before aerith stepped forward with a sweet smile, wrapping an arm around your shoulders. "about the fact that there has not been a single cloud in the sky at all today! thank goodness we have you right here, though, right y/n?"
blinking once and then twice, you jolted in your friend's arms, suddenly feeling tongue tied. "a-ah, um-" you paused, glancing at the faces of the girls beside you before bringing your gaze to the soldier across from you. "y-yeah! totally! thank uh- thank goodness we have you here, cloud.." gaia, why couldn't your words be coherent around him? was it truly so hard to speak around the one person that you'd wished to tell everything to?
cloud stared at you for a handful of seconds, pink rushing to his cheeks as he ran a hand through his spiky tresses, mako-tinted orbs averting. "you really think so..?" it felt a little unreal to hear you say such, considering how skittish you had behaved around him. he would be more convinced if you didn't care so much about his existence, truth be told.
but perhaps, maybe he had gotten you wrong?
"of course-! you're.. really important to all of us here, and especially to.." the words hung in the air for a second as you gathered yourself, sucking in a small breath before expelling it slowly at the tender placement of tifa's hand at the small of your back. "especially to me- even if i don't.. always express that so explicitly to you, cloud."
as though having imagined the words leaving your lips, his gaze drifted to the girls flanking you, silently asking if he'd heard correctly, to which they.. appeared to nod- quite enthusiastically, even.
it was difficult to take as truth, knowing how you'd been acting around him up until now, but perhaps taking your word for it would be the step needed in being able to bridge the gap between the two of you so that conversation would be easier. he quite liked hearing you talk and express yourself so openly to others, it would.. be nice if you might also be able to present yourself that way to him.
once you found yourself at that level of comfort, of course.
offering a small smile, he tipped his head forward, finally allowing his gaze to properly find yours. "you mean a lot to me too, y/n. don't uh- be afraid to tell me otherwise, 'm here to listen to whatever's on your mind, always."

As you turned in your bed for the umpteenth time in an attempt to find a comfortable sleeping position, you couldn’t hold back an annoyed groan. Cloud had already fallen asleep beside you, or so you had thought. It almost startled you when a warm hand made contact with your back, rubbing over tired muscles.
“What’s wrong?”
“I can’t fall asleep.” You whined while turning around.
Cloud was quick to find your body under the blanket, wrapping his arms around your waist to pull you into his embrace. He placed soft kisses on your nose, your forehead, your cheeks and finally, your lips.
“Anything you want to talk about?” He asked with a raspy voice.
“No,” you breathed. “I just can’t get sleepy.”
While letting his fingertips dance over your back, he whispered, “How can I help?”
“Can you just hold me for a little while?”
He placed another kiss on your lips before you curled into his side. Like always when he was sleepy, Cloud felt extra soft and warm under your palms.
