Seal Hunting Victor Westerholm

Victor Westerholm specialized in landscape painting. He worked in the open air, not far from his summer home in Onningeby on the Aland Islands, which boasted an artists colony in the 1880s. In the painting, Westerholm combines a Realist language of painting with synthetic, decorative forms. The figures of hunters looking for seals are shown against a freely rendered landscape. The work emphasizes the might of nature, portraying people against its background. The choice of subject was not accidental. Hunting -en element of the economy and culture of Nordic countries - was very important for the identity of their inhabitants.
