T-85 | Quest to Astro Studios
Good day Mission Control,
First thing first, thank you for landing on this page. Thank you for taking your time to read it. I appreciate it. I hope you will get to know me better after reading this page.
My name is Alden, and I’m about to tell you my story on this journey to Astro Studios. First and foremost, I’m an industrial designer from Singapore.
In 2009, I decided that one day I have to be at Astro Studios. And here I am, finally, making contact with you.
2013 - 2017 is where I learnt the craft of a designer. I’m still learning, and that’s why I am here.
I hope to brings new perspective, the eastern culture(especially Singapore), value-add design, and build new relationship across the globe.
I hope to share 3 of my humble ASUS commercialized design projects process from start to end with the team each month.
I will blog about my ‘space’ adventure on this blog-sphere for the duration of the internship. This can be a experience gauge and reference materials to future intern astronauts.
I was born and raised in Singapore.
It goes way back, my quest to Astro Studios story began in 2009, I recalled, it was near winter, and I’m in my hostel in Jiang nan University as a design exchange student in Wuxi, China. That day, I just brought Carl Liu design book one. This book define two of my life goals. One, go to Art Center, second, go to Astro Studios.
After reading Carl’s life story in the book, I fired up the internet and look up Astro studios, I was blown away by all the design, the visuals, the renders, I sat there almost an hour looking through all of Astro’s work. I was fired up. From that point, I decided that one day, I have to be at Astro studios, whether to intern or to work there one day, to experience the culture, seat in the design studio environment, and interacting with the designers’at work.
Fast forward back, I'm back in Singapore, to complete my final project.
I graduated with a diploma in Product design and Innovation from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2010.
I was enlisted into the army. National service training for 1 year and 10 months. Fully focused. Bridge commander, 3rd sergeant.
Beside me are my best friends and behind me is the poster I designed for the Army! Advance and overcome!
NextOfKin Creatives - I finish my mandatory service, applied for Art Center college of design. I got accepted, but didn’t have the luck to go, as I didn’t got the local scholarship sponsorship.
Luckily, NextOfKin Creatives accepted me as an intern around the same time. I worked as an ID intern and my boss seems to like my work and attitude, and I love the design studio vibe, hence I signed on. It was a hardcore ID learning journey but I love the work.
Work is fun. I carried on designing, clients ranging from Dell, Sennheiser, Creatives technology, till mid 2014.
Mid 2014 to present - ASUS
Asus Design Center [Singapore] - Asus beckoned. I got pulled in by the sheer presence of this giant tech corporation because i was curious and the potential is huge. To describe in single sentence would be one of a hella roller coaster ride.
There are alot of stories, design stories that I hope to share with you guys.
ASUS SABERTOOTH Z170 MARK I
I hope to have the opportunity to intern at one of the world’s most recognized design studio. I pledged to do my best into this 3 months mission.
1 - I can bring some design firepower to the team. My strongest point is in innovative design ideation and bring new radical ideas to the table.
2 - I create awesome visuals. With the fine tune of Astro Studios, I believe we can create the best stunning visuals presentation.
3 - Coming from Singapore and Asus, I hope to share my work projects, and work process, working in NOK and Asus for the past few years. Hopefully this will help your team to understand how an in-house design MNC functions.
4 - In return, I'm committed to blog and document my journey in gravityfighters blog Everyday. This will be a log which future potential Astro intern can refer to.
I believe it will be refreshing experience for Astro Studios team.
I will be grateful for the opportunity to come. The ups and downs of my west coast adventure; a trip to the " Outer space 🚀 " is going to be exciting.
What is life without an adventure?
Against all odds, See you on the other side,
Godspeed the crew of Astro Studios 🚀
