back in february, i drew this and since then i've been sorely disappointed by the lack of nick kay let alone kaychek content. well, after several months of deep depression, i'm coming out swinging with more of these boys

at first they Don’t get along bc thalia really doesn’t understand how hylla could let her little sister just vanish to camp by herself? what if she’d been killed along the way? or while she was part of the legion, running all those quests for the romans?

and hylla doesn’t particularly like how reckless thalia can be. diving in to save someone and acting like a human shield is not a good example to set, and sure it’s a noble thing but what happens if you yourself get killed? who’ll look after the people you’re supposed to be protecting with you gone? how can you look after anyone w/o resources, too??

they’re just super hostile at first. it starts off p harmless; some snarky comments thrown here and there, not-too-subtle jibes about the others methods in leading/protecting tossed about. but then it progresses and ends with hylla saying very unsavoury things in spanish under her breath and thalia is instantly defensive and rapidly going red w/ anger

they end up arguing. thalia saying you just ABANDONED your sister and hylla barking back yeah? at least i didn’t try to erase her entire fucking existence! and THAT. that gets thalia’s fist right in hylla’s face.

but hylla blocks, catches that fist, holds it away from her face w/ this half shocked/half angry look

“i did not try and erase his existence, you don’t fucking know what you’re talking about--”

and hylla is a little ashamed because, no, she can see the effect jason’s “death” had on thalia but she’s so unwilling to admit she’s WRONG

“then why’d you try and forget him? how could you do that to your own brother?”

and thalia looks v. ready to try and punch her again but her arm goes slack and her shoulders droop and she takes a step back. already closing in on herself because she really, REALLY did mean it when she said: it hurt too much to think about, and she couldn’t afford to let it crush her or she’d turn into her mom--letting the loss of someone warp her. she had annabeth and luke to stay strong for. so she kept quiet; she didn’t let herself spiral down with thoughts about her dead baby brother.

and she kind of mutters it at hylla. quiet at first but very defiant when she’s done speaking, she’s glaring and practically spitting the words out, like i fucking dare you to say now that i didn’t care, or that i was wrong to do that.

hylla doesn’t.

she can tell it’s hard to even talk about and she kind of forced it outta thalia so, she replies: “it wasn’t my choice to let reyna go. she wanted to be part of camp jupiter. she wanted to train and join the legion. our dad was a soldier; it’s in our blood. i wanted to keep her safe with the amazons, alongside me, but she had other plans. i had to respect those plans.”

so after that, they BEGRUDGINGLY call a truce. maybe they still don’t AGREE w/ each others choices in regards to their siblings, but they can understand enough of it--and each other a BIT better. hylla gets why thalia is so eager to protect everyone as best she can--even with her life. and thalia figures out why hylla needs everything to be run with such an iron fist. she has her own team--her own hunters in a way, and for them AND reyna she has to stay in control. that’s how hylla protects people.

and they just, continue to get closer and closer after that?

enough that thalia looks out for reyna by extension, and enough that hylla makes sure the amazons don’t hurt jason if he should cross them (given that he stays respectful, ofc) ((but it’s jason so we know he will))
