This crew is made up of Jean, a boy who died in every rough draft, who I believe Nora (the author) made a comment about making him survive without asking if he wanted to, so as you can imagine that is a Very compelling character displaying health and growth from a Very Very dark place. Then you have Jeremy, the emotionally abused, neglected, sunshine captain of the "sunshine court" who is so good at masking even He doesn't feel his feelings half the time yet he is So Loved by his team and his friends and he loves them ferociously in return, so you see him slowly meandering towards The Moment when he chooses love and happiness in his future rather than the pressure and neglect of his past. Now Cat is a Beautiful person! You can see her love and empathy in how she responds to Jean in moments where he reveals his trauma. She is so positive and happy, when she is first introduced she had just exerted herself to the point of collapse only to lose the game she was working so hard for yet she was Smiling. Laila is her twin flame in a lot of ways, but they seem to emotionally balance each other out. They are all such beautiful depictions of the human condition, of being hurt and changed but slowly healing and loving and just Trying every day to be better and do better and help those around you do the same. They feel like hope.
