It’s two in the morning and I’m having a small breakdown over how big and or small fauntling (baby hobbits) are. From what I’ve seen hobbits are 3/5 scale of a human. So naturally if we want to find out the size of the fauntling, we just have to scale down the size of the child of that age by 3/5, right?
But see here the thing. A full-grown hobbit is between 3 to 4 feet tall. 4 feet being like that is a really fucking tall hobbit, they average at 3’6”. But that is also the average size of a 3 to 4 year-old human. Scaling things is kind of hard. Because proportionately, even if we scaled down the size of the baby by 3/5 it’s still kind of weird.
The average newborn HUMAN is just shy of 20in… a fully grown hobbit maxes at 48” and averages 42”. So scaled by 3/5 a newborn hobbit is 12” compared to the adult birthing in at 42”. That makes the newborn about 28% the size of the adult that just have birth to it.
Ok now I’m doing the math. And for humans since the average woman is 5’6” (I live in the us so that’s what we’re going off of), the newborn is still 30% the size?? How do they fit? How tf does the human body do that???
Anyway. I like the idea that fauntlings aren’t born but in fact grown in the garden like a radish. And considering they are apparently the size of a daikon radish, it seems fitting. That’s all.
