The fastigiate habit of Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender Silhouette' (sweet gum) makes it ideal for closely planted avenues or proximity to buildings. This tree provides great autumn colour with leaves colouring from orange to brilliant purplish red. These colours are most intense if planted in full sun but the trees thrive in lime-free, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.

The upright form of Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ (upright hornbeam) can be used in a restricted space but the trees has been described as developing ‘middle-aged spread’. As it matures, the habit changes from a flame-like shape to the appearance of an Ace of Spades so regular pruning is needed to maintain the shape. It is an interesting cultivar to use for avenue planting, producing uniformity, an architectural shape and a good display of autumn colour. In this specimen you can see the graft at the base of the tree which remains evident even when mature.

This cultivar, Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender Silhouette', at Provender Nursery, UK, offers a tall slim fast growing tree with great autumn colour. It can reach a height of 15-20 metres but according to nurseries on-line even when mature two adults could make a circle around the crown by holding hands! I think I may need to fit one of these in my garden...
