His peanut business, which sold certified seed peanuts and other farm supplies, was $1 million in the red by the time he finished his term, The Washington Post reports. Carter had been managing the family-owned peanut farm, warehouse and store in Plains, Georgia, since his dad died in 1953, but when he became president, he put it into a blind trust to avoid conflicts of interest. When he left office in debt, “we thought we were going to lose everything,” Carter’s wife Rosalynn told the Post.
That's a contrast to Donald Trump who regards the Federal Treasury as his personal ATM.
Trump discloses thousands of stock trades, some in companies directly influenced by his policies
Recent presidents have stayed away from trading stocks in companies whose fortunes they could lift or scuttle with the stroke of a pen, but Donald Trump smashed that precedent in the first quarter of this year with more than 3,600 buy and sell orders, many of them involving companies whose profits have been directly impacted by his decisions as head of the government. Among the Trump trades in a recent report filed with a federal ethics agency was as much as $6 million in Nvidia, whose advanced chips Trump approved for sale to China last year. His portfolio also scooped up stocks of several U.S. military suppliers impacted by the Iran war, including Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman.
Trump's travel companions on his trip to China included the heads of companies whose stock he has been buying.
In addition to Nvidia, the president’s portfolio includes shares in Apple, Boeing and Tesla. The CEOs of all four companies accompanied Trump on his visit to China recently. The portfolio also includes Intel, the chipmaker in which the government took a 10% stake last year.
Trump and his broligarch pals are getting richer by the day while the rest of us are being squeezed economically.
Trump promised to "drain the swamp". Instead, the swamp is overflowing and its level of putridity has skyrocketed.
