The following afternoon, you entered the Mirror chamber casually; Leona had told you he had some last-minute business to take care of (he often did, on days like this), so you told him youâd wait for him there. As you entered the room, your fingers flexed nervously around the handle-straps of your duffel bag; dozens of students were leaping through the portal, heading out of Night Raven and returning to their own homes for the holiday season. You scanned the area, hoping you could catch a couple of particular parties before they leftâŚ
You eventually spotted one of the two. Ace and Deuce were just saying goodbye to Trey Clover, who followed a less-than-excited-looking Riddle Rosehearts through the portal. You saw that Deuce was carrying a large cage-box; a pet carrier. You rushed over to your friend with a smile and waved them down. Ace Trappola was the one who noticed you.
âOh!â Ace exclaimed, and waved back as he called out: âHi ya, Prefect! Glad you could make it in time!â
âWhereâs Leona?â Deuce asked, looking none-too-pleased by the lionâs absence; you guessed it was some sense of protectiveness about you. âIsnât he going with you?â
âWell, yeah,â you nodded. âHeâs just busy.â
You looked towards the cage and paused, biting your lip before checking: âUmâŚis he, uhâŚtaking it well?â
Ace and Deuce shared a look, and Deuce lifted the cage. You moved closer and peered inside. Inside the pet carrier was Grim: the small gray cat-like demon was pouting in the back corner of the carrier, his fiery ears barely flickering as his turquoise eyes smoldered in a petulant huff. The moment he noticed you, he glared.
âNyaâŚthis is so humiliating,â he grumbled. âThe Great Grim, treated like a common housepetâŚas soon as Iâm let out of here, Iâm setting the red oneâs butt on fire!â
âYou do and Iâll give you such a pinch!â snapped Ace.
You smiled gently, almost sadly.
âIâm sorryâŚI really want this first visit to be for me and Leona,â you apologized to the trapped imp.
âBut I can be quiet!â Grim promised, moving closer to the cage door with pleading eyes. âI can behave, honest! Youâll never even know Iâm there! Iâm super subtle!â
âLike a train wreck on a boat,â snorted Deuce. Ace snickered while Grim glared at him, then looked at you pleadingly again.
âPleaseâŚcanât I go with you? Youâre MY minion, not his.â
You shook your head and reached through the bars, scratching and scratching Grim under his chin. You waited till the cat-like creature began to purr, then went on.
âIt will only be till the holidays are over, I promise. Once weâre all back in school, Iâll make it up to you.â
Grim paused, biting his lip.
ââŚWith tuna?â he meowed hopefully.
You smiled wider.
âIâll get you a BUCKET full of tuna,â you vowed. âAnd Iâll make sure to buy a present for you while Iâm in the Savannah.â
âHey, youâll have to make it up to US, too,â snapped Ace, crossing his arms over his chest. âHeâs gonna be difficult, I can tell!â
Grim gave his most innocent, adorable, kitten-eyed smile and purred sweet, seemingly proving this, and earning a glare from Ace. You chuckled, and raised an eyebrow in Aceâs direction.
âCherry pie and a movie sound good for a start?â
Aceâs eyes lit up at the mention of his favorite meal, and he licked his lips.
âThat oughta do it,â he nodded.
You nodded back, and then looked to Deuce, a little bit anxiously.
âYou WILL take good care of him, right?â
âIâll do my best,â Deuce promised, with a mild, reassuring smile.
âYeah! And Iâll pop in now and again to make sure he doesnât set his own house on fire!â Ace winked, giving a thumbs-up and slinging an arm around Deuceâs shoulders.
Deuce narrowed his eyes, and muttered something in the vein of âspeak for yourself,â but his smile didnât fade.
âThanks, guys,â you said to both of your friends, and then looked to Grim once more. âPlease try not to be TOO crazy?â
âI make no promises!â Grim winked teasinglyâŚthen his own eyes softened. âNyaâŚjustâŚbe careful, Minion. The ones who live in the Savannah can beâŚwellâŚâ
âI know. Iâll try to stay out of trouble. You stay safe, and weâll do our best to have a call on Christmas. Okay?â
âOkay,â mewed Grim, and as you put your fingers through the bars again, he nuzzled your hand gently. âBye, Minion. Happy Holidays.â
âHappy Holidays to you, Grim,â you smiled, and bid the same to Ace and Deuce. Both of them mock-saluted you, and without another word, left through the portal.
No sooner were they gone from sight, than you heard huffing and panting behind you, along with the sound of squeaky wheels. You turned, already knowing who it was: the small, slim figure of Ruggie Bucchi pelted into the Mirror Chamber. He paused part of the way into the room and panted like a dog, dropping the handle of the large, plastic ice chest had with him. A somewhat worse-for-the-wear-looking leather suitcase (a hand-me-down from Leona; he didnât really need it) was strapped to the top of it.
As Ruggie leaned back against his cargo and sighed softly, you approached him.
âYour usual haul from the cafeteria?â you called.
Ruggieâs gray eyes blinked in your directionâŚand he grinned.
âYep! Half for me, half for the kids at the shelter!â he nodded, patting the chestâs side and winking. âNaturally, I COULD just eat all of it myself, buuuuut season oâ giving and all that! Shishishishi!â
He tilted his head and stood a bit straighter; his hyena ears perked up as his tail swished behind him. He looked you up and down for a moment before continuing: âSo! Gonna be your first visit to the Savannah, yeah?â
âHopefully the first of many,â you nodded, then added: âBefore you say anything about how dangerous it is, trust me, I already gathered that.â
âAw, you can take care of yourselfâŚprobably,â shrugged Ruggie. âBesides, youâll have Leona with you! Youâre lucky: getting to spend your Christmas at the PalaceâŚâ
âTrust me, I wonât let it go to my head,â you said, catching the light note of envy and even sadness in Ruggieâs eyes. He smiled gratefully, tail wagging a bit faster. âWhy donât you join us?â
âHeh. Tempting, but nah,â he said, waving a hand dismissively. âUnlike Leona, I actually LIKE spending the holidays with my folks. Family is important to us hyenasâŚsometimes I think even more so than with lions. Though not as much as wolves,â he pointed out quickly. âSeriously, Fresh Babyâs family SPOILS him.â
You rolled your eyes, then glanced around quickly, making sure no one nearby might notice as you moved closer. You caught no sight of Leona yet, which was good.
âHeyâŚbefore you go, I have a question for you,â you said.
âOh?â Ruggie asked, and leaned closer, cocking his head the other way and blinking innocently. âWhatâs up? You know, besides the skyâŚthe ceilingâŚouter spaceâŚshishishishi!â
The look on your face told Ruggie how much you enjoyed that joke.
You really didnât.
âAww, everybodyâs a critic,â muttered the hyena, then shook his head to clear it. âAnyway! What do you need to ask?â
âI havenât gotten a Christmas gift for Leona yet,â you whispered carefully. âDo you have any idea where I might find something good for him?â
Ruggie hummed thoughtfully and scratched his chin in thoughtâŚthen smiled slyly.
âI know a place,â he said, at length, then winked. âBut it might be easier to show you the way rather than just tell you, especially with you being a stranger and all.â
âGood point,â you mumbled, then checked aloud: âWhen should we meet up, then?â
âLetâs figure that out once weâre both through the looking-glass,â said Ruggie. âYou can call me tomorrow, when weâre settled in, and we can arrange something. Sound good?â
âVery,â you said, and hugged Ruggie gently. âThanks, hyena.â
Ruggie smiled somewhat bashfully and hugged you back; a sound somewhere between a dogâs happy rumble and a catâs purr came from him.
âYeah, yeah, justâŚeasy on the affectionâŚI might not be a Prince, but I DO have a reputation to keep up, yâknow?â
You giggled and released him. Ruggie stepped back and picked up the handle of the cooler again.
âOh! Do me a favor, will ya?â he added, as he began to move towards the Mirror. âMake sure he actually TRIES to pick up his own mess? Lord knows SOMEBODY has to take the burden off the servants thereâŚseriously, he could make his bed, at the very least, jeezeâŚoh-oh! And PLEASE remind him to do whatever homework he has BEFORE the last three days of the freaking break?â
âIâll try,â you chortled at the hyenaâs grumbling. âTake care, Ruggie!â
Ruggie grinned, gave you a âpeace sign,â and with another of his trademark snickers â âShishishishi!â â he was gone.
After Ruggie left, it was still twenty minutes till Leona arrived; you didnât mind much. You sat upon a bench in the Mirror Chamber and waited patiently, watching others depart. You said goodbye to Kalim and Jamil (making sure to hug Kalimâs stuffed parrot, Gilbert, much to Jamilâs clear disgrace), waved farewell to the Shroud Brothers (Ortho waved back cheerily; Idia whimpered and hid his face with the collar of his jacket), and bid a casual âStay safe! Happy Holidays!â to several other students who passed by as well. Finally, Leona came prowling into the chamber, looking very much like he would much rather be back in his bed, covers pulled over his head, than going home for the holidays. He was carrying a large brown paper bag with carboard handles; the logo told you he had gotten it from the Mystery Shop.
He HAD said he needed to take care of something; you guessed he had to pick up something for his nephew, and shrugged idly before waving him down. Leonaâs ears pricked up slightly as he noticed you, and his stalking motions became something more like a swagger, a suave smile slipping over his scarred face as he moved towards you.
âHey,â he greeted, coolly. âSo, ready to go.â
âReady as Iâll ever be!â you chirrupedâŚ
âŚAnd the smile fled your face in an instant as he drew nearerâŚand, without any warning â before you could get up from the bench - he pulled you close, pressing the side of your head to his cloth covered belly. He was dressed in his school uniform.
âGood,â he whispered, and licked his teeth before adding: âItâll be lunchtime soonâŚIâm already STARVINGâŚâ
GRRRLLLGâŚ
A deep rumble from the belly of the lion made his abdomen quiver through his vest and rumpled white shirt. You blushed bright red and tried to push away, but Leona held you fast, his expression the contented grin of a cat that had caught the canary.
âL-LeonaâŚumâŚother people are watching,â you peeped, anxiously.
âLet âem,â Leona grunted with a shrug, and leaned down to whisper: âThey know youâre mine. They better.â
You squeaked like a mouse. Leona let out a snicker that would make Ruggie proud, and finally released you. You stood up quickly, taking a few steps away as you composed yourself and straightened yourself out. The lion-man watched with one eyebrow raised, his free hand on his hip as he cocked it slightly.
âAhemâŚwellâŚif youâre done with your regular teasing of meâŚâ
âOh, I havenât even STARTED,â Leona growled, then shrugged as he added: âIâll stop for now though.â
âThank you,â you breathed, a little bashful as you realized some people really WERE watching, and you tried to put them out of your mind. âAnywayâŚif youâre so hungry, shouldnât we get moving?â
Leonaâs smile faded and he sighed.
âI guess,â he grumbled noncommittally, a big sourpuss again as he muttered to himself: âSuch a painâŚâ
âWell, thatâs a LITTLE different,â you muttered to yourself, then shook your head to clear it and took him by the hand. Leona blinked, startled a bit, and looked from his hand to youâŚthen frowned as he pulled it back.
âOiâŚdonât hang onto me like that,â he grimaced. âI already have ONE annoying runt to deal with, okay?â
âSorry,â you apologized sincerely, and decided not to comment on the faint pinkish hue of his cheeks as he snarled softly and marched towards the Mirror.
âCome on, Herbivore,â he called back over his shoulder, sticking his free hand in his pockets, hips sashaying as he moved towards the portal home. âDonât keep me waiting; itâs not too late for you to spend Christmas as a pile of dust.â
He was bluffingâŚbut you obeyed anyway.
Leona gave a slight smirk of what seemed to be triumph as you hurried to his sideâŚthen, the two of you took a deep breath togetherâŚ
âŚAnd through the looking-glass you went.
The Dark Mirror was a wonderful thing: it never simply delivered one to their hometown, but would âdrop you offâ at one particular place near wherever you needed to be. For Ruggie, you presumed, this meant somewhere in the bustling cityscape of the Afterglow Savannah region. But for Leona Kingscholar â and, in this case, for you â it meant right outside Pride Palace: the regal home of the royal family Kingscholar. The place was a wonder, made of manilla-colored stone, gilded and with turquoise accents. Hundreds of windows and arches were visible; the windows were darkly tinted, and the only real way you could tell the empty archways from the glass-paned panels was the way the light of the baby blue sky above glinted off them. What looked like a dozen towers jutted from a wide, long âwallâ that formed the palace itself; it loomed over you, shining in the sunlight of the Savannah like some immense monument of wild splendor. As you looked around the landscape, you saw that throughout the grasslands were houses and homes of all kinds, giving the surroundings a bizarre feeling; both isolated and primitive, yet united and modern.
Leona smirked smugly in your direction.
âYeah. I know. Big, isnât it?â he purred, sounding quite proud of that; he may not have liked his family, but he clearly liked his home.
All you could do was nod, somewhat dumbly.
âI am not worthy,â you gulped.
âNope,â Leona agreed bluntly.
That seemed to snap you out of your stupor, and you gave him a flustered, half-hearted glare.
âThanks a lot.â
Leona grinned toothily, and the sight of those sharp, perfectly white teeth made you lose your ill temper. He tossed his head, twitching his tail as he bade you follow him, so you did.
The palace may have looked like a huge wall â boxy and rectangular, with the towers stretching from it to the sky â but an ACTUAL wall, much more simple and small, surrounded the property, at the end of a tall flight of stone steps that led from the bottom of the hill to the top. As you neared the top, you glanced to your left, and â past Leona â you saw the legendary Pride Rock, where the King of Beasts had once ruled. Your attention was drawn away from the famous mountain, however, as you noticed two tall, burly figures standing guard. It took you a moment to realize that they were both women: lionesses; demis like Leona. Each wore animal skins â giraffes, specifically you realized â and had leather helmets, with armor on their legs and arms. They carried spears and brightly-painted shields that bore the imagery of a roaring lionâs head on each. You recognized the image as the one that Leona had tattoed on one of his armsâŚalthough the image on the shields was white, while Leonaâs tattoo was black.
The lionesses crossed their spears and frowned as you and Leona approached.
âWelcome home, Prince Leona,â one of the guards greeted, but there was nothing at all welcoming in her tone of voice.
Leona smiled that tight, sharp smile that gave you the sense he was chanting a mantra of respect, respect, respect in his head. Then, he took a breath and spoke; his voice was clear and surprisingly refined â you recognized it not as the voice of the lazy, lounging feline who regularly demanded belly rubs from you, but instead the calculating chess master who could give even Azul Ashengrotto a run for his money.
âIt is good to be home again,â he lied through his teeth.
âWho is this?â barked the second guard, and you yelped as a spear was pointed at you. âMeat?â
You gulped nervously and turned a little pale. Leona chuckled, as if the idea was amusing to him, which didnât encourage you in the leastâŚthough you felt a little better when he placed a hand on your shoulder and shook his head.
âNo,â he answered. âThis is my prospective mate.â
He introduced you by name then, and then introduced to the two guards: Kali and Nia. Apparently, they were sisters.
âWelcome to Pride Palace,â Kali welcomed you; you couldnât tell for sure, but her voice seemed a little less cold and stiff with you than with Leona.
âUhâŚhi,â you greeted, eloquently.
âIâm sure His Highness will be pleased to meet you,â Nia put in.
âThank you,â you nodded, trying not to stutter (and somehow succeeding).
The pair opened the gates, and Leona â still with a hand on your shoulder â led you through. You winced as they shut behind you more loudly than you thought they perhaps should have.
âJeezeâŚyou werenât kidding about the lionesses: they ARE intense,â you shivered. âIâŚI seriously thought they mightâŚâ
âEat you? Donât worry, thatâs MY job,â Leona growled.
âŚIt bothered you how comforting that wasâŚ
At any rate, you took in the sights of the courtyard. You could suddenly understand why Leona seemed to claim the greenhouse area of the school as âhis territoryâ: the colorful plants and the sounds of feral, exotic birds were all around you. You could see a beautiful pool in one spot of the courtyard, and benches ornately carved in solid wood were everywhere. A nearby fountain filled your ears with its peaceful, trickling lullaby; it resembled a roaring lion, standing atop pride rock, the water spilling from divets in the rock itself in a most elaborate manner. Now you could see the trappings of Christmas, too: palm trees were here, just like outside, and each one was decorated with red and gold ornaments. Garland was strung along the interior of the wall, with wreaths hanging at certain points.
âWow,â you gasped, involuntarily. âItâsâŚitâs beautiful!â
âEh. Itâs got its perks,â shrugged Leona, but the purr in his voice told you he was pleased with your reaction.
âDo youâŚreally live here?â you couldnât help but ask.
Leona blinked boredly at you.
âNo, I live in a soap box down the street, what do you think?â
You snorted with laughterâŚbut you stopped when you realized the prince wasnât even so much as batting an eye.
âAhemâŚuhâŚsorry, justâŚthis is a lot to take in.â
âI can imagine, for that little Herbivore mind,â Leona said, his smirk returning.
âSo all this is yours?â you checked.
His smirk fell, and he looked away; his scar seemed to flare up.
âThat depends on perspective,â he growled softly, the hand that gripped the paper bag clenching tightly. âRight now, itâs technically my dear brotherâsâŚand after himâŚâ
He trailed off.
Your eyes softened. You moved closer and gripped his arm. He turned to face you and you smiled.
âItâs your home, so its yours,â you said gently.
Leona paused, looking you up and downâŚthen smiled faintly.
âYesâŚwellâŚone day, it might be ours,â he said, in a slippery, smooth wayâŚthen grinned deviously as he added: âIf I donât swallow you first.â
âSwallow me, and you wonât be able to leave your room for a week,â you quipped.
Leona just grinned wider, and cupped your face in his free hand as he leaned closer.
âI think I could live with that,â he rumbled, and you quivered as his lips drew nearer to yoursâŚyour eyes fluttered closedâŚyou felt his warm, soft breath tickle your own lipsâŚand thenâŚ
âDidnât your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?â
Leona hissed, and the two of you jumped away from each other like scalded cats (appropriately, in his case). The two of you turned towards the source of the interruptionâŚand you blinked. The figure before you was the strangest person you ever saw. He looked like a man â small and reedy, with a beaky sort of nose and large, bird-like eyes of piercing obsidian. He was dressed in a blue robe, tied with a black and white beltâŚbut the strange part was that his hair seemed to look like blue feathers. Behind him were a set of wings, almost like a stereotypical angel, with feathers of blue, black, and white, matching the colors of his clothes.
âDamu,â growled Leona, and the way he uttered the name instantly told you that, even if he didnât hate his family, he had absolutely NO love for this peculiar bird-man. âWhat do YOU want?â
Damu sniffed snootily, and then bowedâŚbut not very low.
âI was sent to greet the Second Crown Prince when he arrived,â Damu said, in a high-flung dialect â similar to Leonaâs, but more high-pitched andâŚyou searched for a word, and âstuffyâ was all that came to mind. âYour brother has been informed of your arrival today, and was looking forward to itâŚâ
He then scowled and crossed his arms, glaring at Leona without an ounce of respect.
ââŚSo youâd better have a good reason for showing up late for your Christmas holidays.â
âI had something to take care of,â Leona answered, clearly trying not to speak through his teeth.
âIâm sure,â Damu said, with another sniffâŚthen turned his eyes on you. You almost flinched as he glared at you; Leona had looked at you many times with the kind of stare that gave you the feeling he was looking at a mouse.
Damu made you feel somehow even smaller, like a speck of sand.
âAnd who is this peasant?â he snapped. âThey donât look at all suitable for an appointment here at the Palace.â
âThis âpeasant,â Damu,â Leona growled, and his arm went around your shoulders again in a protective, possessive manner, âIs my future mate.â
âMore like your future snack,â Damu scoffed. âYou canât be serious.â
âI am,â Leona insisted, calmly. âDEAD serious.â
The way he emphasized the word made Damu take a step back, you noticed. You could help but feel a certain swell of triumph in your own chest as Leona smirked with the same.
Damu, however, clearly wasnât done talking.
âWhat a pity,â he murmured, then more loudly added: âAre you ATTEMPTING to disgrace your family at this point? Bringing a mere human, and a common one at that, into such a fold? Your parents would be ashamed.â
âYou say that every day about everything I do,â Leona responded, rather boredly, as if any sting that SHOULD have had had died long ago. âYouâre going to need a new reprimand, bird brain.â
Damuâs eyes widened and he sputtered, a hand to his chest.
âBird brain?!â he choked out, as if it were the worst possible insult one could give. âI am one of the Kingâs chief advisors, Prince Leona.â
Leona chuckled darkly and released you as he began to advance on Damu.
âOhhhhh, I quiver with FEARâŚâ
You gulped nervously. You knew the tone of that voiceâŚthe look in those green eyesâŚ
âLeona,â you whispered softly, but he just growled, without looking at you, grinning and licking his fangs.
Damuâs bravado left him completely, and he began to back up.
âN-NowâŚnow, P-Prince LeonaâŚLeonaâŚdonât look at me that wayâŚâ
âHA!â Leona barked out, and lunged.
âHELP!â squawked Damu, and his wings flappedâŚbut before he could get anywhere, Leona had him pinned against the wall, holding him by the front of his collar as he lifted him up off the ground. He cackled softly.
âWell,â he rumbled. âWould you mind repeating what you said about MY Herbivore nowâŚâ
He leaned close and allowed his breath to fall across Damuâs panicked face.
ââŚOr AFTER you start to crumble into dust?â
âLeona.â
A commanding voice filled the courtyard. All eyes turned toward its source. Framed between two trees, you saw the silhouette of another lion demi: this one was roughly the same height as Leona, but with broader shoulders and a more âbuffâ physique. Rich, brown eyes narrowed in the shadows.
âYes?â Leona hissed.
âDrop him,â the voice â somehow even deeper than Leonaâs â commanded.
Leona snarled, and looked back at Damu murderously. The bird-man whimperedâŚ
âŚThen he froze, as you placed a hand on Leonaâs shoulder. The half-lion looked back at you fastâŚand the fire left his eyes as he looked into your own.
You didnât have to say anything. He looked from you, to Damu, to the figure in the shadows, then back to you againâŚand sighed, relaxing in apparent defeat.
ââŚWhatever,â he muttered, expression shifting to a dull sort of look, and he released the pompous avian hybrid.
Damu cried out shrilly, glared at both your boyfriend AND you (clearly he felt gratitude was overrated), and he stood up, ruffling his wings and running a hand through the feathers on his head.
âImpeccable timing, Your Majesty,â he muttered as he hustled to stand near where the silhouetted figure was.
The silhouetted figure nodded in Damuâs direction, gave Leona a stern sort of look (he returned it with a smirk and a shrug, showing he couldnât care less)âŚthen looked to you.
The eyes softenedâŚand the figure stepped out of the shadows. He was dressed in robes of brown and gold, with long red hair. His face was strong and clean-shaven, with a chisel jawâŚbut his smile was soft as he looked to you. His stance was lordly and imperious, the same stance Leona used so oftenâŚbut somehow, there was a gentleness to his eyes, that gave you the feeling nothing was there to fear. Not even when he smiled, revealing dagger-sharp fangs as his lion-tail curled into a J-shape behind him.
âWelcome to Pride Palace,â the strong lion greeted you, in a voice as rich and warm as hot chocolate, matching the shade of his eyes. âI am Farena.â
For a moment, you were silentâŚthen, Leona nudged you with a grunt, and you awkwardly introduced yourself, starting to bow. Damu smiled in an almost smug mannerâŚbut his smile soon faded as Farena chuckled and lifted his hands in a placating manner.
âPlease, you donât have to do that,â he said in that strong but gentle voice, and approached you, extending a hand as his tail flipped behind him, the tip flicking till the curve was now facing the opposite direction. His stance relaxed, as if he wanted you to feel more equal to him. âLeona has told me a great deal about you.â
You blinked, and cautiously accepted Farenaâs hand.
âHeâŚhas?â you said softly, and glanced towards Leona, who watched you and his brother shake hands with an aloof expression.
âOf course!â Farena said, boisterously, and lifted his head with a smile as he moved close, clapping you on the back with one huge hand. You winced as it stung a bit, and laughed nervously as he chortled with a smile. âI was beginning to wonder if my little brother would ever open that stony old heart of his to anyone! You have to be pretty special to deal with this lazybones, hm?â
âFarena,â growled Leona, clenching his fists and grinding his teeth. You couldnât help but smirk; the actions should have been threatening, the faint pinkish hue his tanned cheeks turned made you think so much of a young cub being embarrassed by his fatherâŚ
âWellâŚitâs not easy,â you teased back. âI mean, I literally had to pull him by the tail to get him to class once.â
Leona flashed a shocked look of utter betrayal towards you. Farenaâs own eyes widened and he gasped.
âAre you serious?â he asked.
âOh, yeah,â you nodded, ignoring the way Leona tried to cut in as you added: âHe just would NOT get out of bed, and if he missed that day, he would have had to take the class all over again. So I dragged him out of his bed, out of the dorm room, and all the way down the hall to the exit.â
Farena began roaring with laughter. Leona just groaned and facepalmed, grumbling to himself.
âOh, I wish I had been there!â the king chortled merrily. âI canât imagine his âsubjectsâ let him hear the end of it soon enough.â
You just smiled at that; in truth, spending several hours in Leonaâs stomach as punishment for that had almost been worth it.
Oh, who were you kiddingâŚit was TOTALLY worth it.
You glanced over at Leona and gave a wincing, scared smile as he glared at you with vengeance. You had the distinct feeling he was trying to decide whether or not ANOTHER round of âimprisonmentâ was warranted or not.
âWell, at least I know heâs in good hands, if youâre willing to go that far,â chuckled Farena, and turned to the bird-man nearby. âDamu! Go and instruct the kitchen staff to have lunch ready within the hour!â
âYes, sire,â Damu said, sibilantly, and bowed before flapping his wings and flying off into the sky, disappearing behind the trees of the courtyard.
âFollow me inside,â smiled Farena, stepping away from you and straightening his posture again as he waved towards the walkway leading up to the palace doors. âThe rest of the family is waiting!â
Leona groaned a little louder.
âOh, goody,â he droned.
You forced down a snicker; you had a feeling if you laughed at him now, you would most definitely be lion foodâŚ
âŚWhy was that making it HARDER not to snicker?
The two of you followed Farena up to the palace entrance; you idly noticed that Farena carried himself differently than Leona. Leona, for all his antisocial behavior, had a sort of swagger to him, as if he seemed to know all eyes were on him, WANTED all eyes to be on him, and was eager to give those eyes what they wanted to see. His hips were always in constant motion, and his head was always held high with confidence. He COMMANDED your attention. Farena was far less slinky, and didnât seem to strut; he walked with a sense of strength and straightforward determination. There was still pride in his movements, but it was far less flashy and inviting. It was the walk of someone who knew he had authority but did not want to show off â effectively the opposite of Leona, in some ways.
You shook your head to clear it of these thoughts as Farena pushed open the huge red doors that led into the central palace; each bore knockers shaped like golden lionâs heads, with the rings held in their jaws. As you entered the palace, your eyes nearly bugged out of your skull, and your walk slowed to a stop as you behold the colorful, vibrant interior of the place: the foyer was a wide, circular chamber, framed by huge white pillars, with passages leading into the halls of the palace spread out in four different directions. Furniture here was covered in what looked like zebra skin, and the polished tile floor bore the imagery of rhinos milling about. It was almost as green as the courtyard; in front of each pillar was planted a small palm tree, and on either side of each palm tree, one spotted flowers in large clay pots. Paintings and traditional masks of the Savannah region were hung up on the walls, and overhead was a gigantic mural, revealing an oasis where various animals seemed to live in peace and harmony.
The color of the lights seemed to bathe all of this splendor and artistry in a fine sheen of warm, pleasant goldâŚwhich matched the ornaments you saw hanging from the palm trees. Just like the courtyard, the palace was decorated interiorly for the holiday season: it was such a stark contrast to see the traditional things you were used to in such an exotic place, with holly stuck upon each light, and garland draped between the pillars. There were four mistletoe wreaths, each hung over the entrances of the four halls.
âMagnificent, isnât it?â Farena grinned, a twinkle in his eye as he noticed your awestruck look.
You nodded dumbly, not sure of what to say. A moment later, you felt your teeth click against one another, and blinked up at Leona, who was smirking.
âCareful, Herbivore; youâll catch flies,â he purred, and playfully patted your cheek.
You blushed.
Leonaâs teasing smile soon disappeared, however, as a familiar voice came squealing from down one of the halls.
âUNCLE LEONA!â
You saw Leonaâs ears flatten as a look of absolute dread came over him.
âOh, noâŚhere comes troubleâŚâ
He turned aroundâŚand stumbled, nearly falling over onto his back as what looked like a red-and-yellow blur SLAMMED into his legs. You jumped a bitâŚthen smirked and sniggered as you saw the form of a tiny lion demi, about five years old, happily hugging your boyfriendâs legs. He was purring and mewing with joy, nuzzling Leonaâs knees lovingly.
âI missed you, Uncle Leona!â Cheka meowed out happily. âMerry Christmas!â
Leona blinked downâŚthen sighed, deflating and frowning as he turned his eyes heavenward.
âItâs not Christmas yet, runt,â he grunted.
âNope! But it will be soon!â sing-songed Cheka, and happily pulled back, smiling oh-so-innocently and sweetly up at Leonaâs face, huge eyes blinking expectantly. âDidja miss me, too, Uncle Leona? Huh? Huh? Didja?â
Leona growled and ruffled Chekaâs headfur in responseâŚeven as he muttered to himself: âYeahâŚjust like how I miss having a rashâŚâ
You snorted with laughter. Cheka, oblivious, just giggled and half-heartedly swiped at his uncleâs handâŚthen blinked when he saw you, and smiled hugely.
âOh! Hi, Uncle Leonaâs Pet!â
You froze and turned red.
âHisâŚhis wh-what?â you squeaked out.
Leona snickered as Farena exclaimed âCheka!â in a scolding sort of tone. Cheka blinked, looking confused by all the reactions.
âBut thatâs what they are,â he insisted, and nodded eagerly. âUncle Leona said they were his petâŚalso his snackâŚbut I like pet more! Pets donât get eaten!â
You tried to speak, but could only sputter.
Farena shot Leona a dirty look as he reached down and picked up his son, who still looked naively befuddled by all the responses heâd gotten from his exclamation.
âWhat ideas are you putting into my sonâs head this time?â he growled.
âI have NO idea what you could mean,â Leona purred in response, with his usual superior, almost taunting smile. âI simply used my own terms of endearment, and the little hairball picked up on them.â
Farena glared at the reference to his son as âthe little hairball,â but said nothing.
âIâŚIâm used to it, trust me,â you said, trying to defuse thingsâŚand wondering how you could admit that those pet names Leona had for you were so casual to dismiss. Nevertheless, it seemed to work, because Farenaâs expression became much more calmâŚthough he still gave Leona a look that seemed to say they were going to have a talk about what he said in front of Cheka. Again.
âCheka,â Farena said to his son, who blinked and flicked his tail cutely as he watched his father intently, hanging onto every word the king said. âThe human is NOT Uncle Leonaâs âpet,â as you put it. They are his prospective mate; his significant other.â
Cheka tilted his head, one ear flicking.
âSigâŚsigificent otter?â
âSignificant other,â growled Leona, monotonously. âIt means a boyfriend or a girlfriend, in this case.â
âOhhhhhh,â Cheka nodded slowlyâŚthen grinned anew, perking up. âSo, does that mean Uncle Leonaâs gonna get married?â
Leona facepalmed. You let out a mousey squeak.
Farena laughed and gave his son an affectionate chuck on the chin, making Cheka giggle more.
âWell, Circle of Life be willing,â he winked.
âEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!â squealed Cheka, bouncing in his fatherâs arms and clapping excitedly. âCan I spread the flowers? Huh? Can I, Dad? Pleeeeeaaase?â
âHow do you know anything about weddings?â snapped Leona, suddenly, and looked to Farena. âThe bratâs five years old! Furthermore,â he went on, snapping back to Cheka, âItâs the GIRLâS job to spread the flowers!â
Before Farena could respond, Cheka answered instead: âMom told me about how she and dad got married. And carrying the ring sounds boooooring. I wanna have the flowers! Iâll throw âem like a ninja!â
The boy began throwing his arms out, making âfwoosh!â sounds as he mimed throwing flowers all over the place.
Farena shook his head with a slightly bashful grin of his own, while Leona buried his face in BOTH hands this time, muttering something in Swahili; you werenât sure, but you thought it was something along the lines of, âChernabog, give me strength.â By this point, you were beaming from ear to ear, not sure which of these reactions made you smile more.
Just then, a gentle chuckle came from the hall, and the sound of soft footsteps caught your ear. You looked up, and saw a lioness demi approaching. She was not unusually buff and tough, the way the near-Amazonian guards youâd met were, but her form was still toned and athletic; a fact visible even under the robes she wore, which matched Farenaâs (aside from the cut and size, naturally). Her eyes were the same as her husbandâs and her sonâs, and though she was not very old, you could see signs of care in her face; the face of a strong but caring mother.
âYou boys,â she smirked, eyeing both Leona and Farena with a twinkle of amusement in her eye, before looking to Cheka. âSweetheart, are you causing trouble for your Uncle again?â
âNo, Mom!â Cheka chirruped with a happy little smile. âIâm being good! I am!â
âThatâs exactly what the trouble is,â grumbled Leona to himselfâŚthen he caught the eye of the lioness, and bowed his head respectfully as he said aloud: âGood afternoon, Selena.â
âGood afternoon, Leona,â Selena answered, with a respectful bow of her own headâŚwhich she cocked to one side, her short blonde hair shifting slightly as she noticed you. âAnd who is this?â
You almost bowed againâŚbut you remembered how Farena had responded to that, and thought better of it. Instead, you smiled and politely introduced yourself. Selena hummed thoughtfully, raising an eyebrow as you explained you were Leonaâs âprospective mate,â and looked you up and down. There was a critical look in her eye, and you got the feeling she was testing you in some way.
You wished you knew what the test was; you werenât sure if you were passing it or not.
Apparently, whatever she was looking for, she decided it was good enough, as she smiled and greeted you in a patient, kind manner.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you; Iâve been looking forward to meeting my brother-in-lawâs favorite human. We donât get very many of them here, you seeâŚâ
âThey probably think weâre going to rip them apart, or something,â the king shrugged, carelessly.
You gulped nervously. Selena gave her husband a chiding look.
âFarena, youâll scare our guest,â she said, gently.
âOh!â Farena exclaimed, and gave you an apologetic smile. âIâm sorry. Weâre lions; itâs a habit.â
âItâs alright,â you admitted, but you did still feel a bit worried; it suddenly occurred to you that you WERE, in fact, in a house full of predatory creatures. You knew that Leona ate people on occasionâŚand Savanaclaw was bad enough.
Now you were on the prideâs home turf, with no rules about not eating other students to keep you safe. Leona must have sensed your distress, because he growled and pulled you close. You couldnât tell if his grip was possessive, protective, or a perfect blend of bothâŚbut either way, you were happy to have it.
âIâd like to get to my room now,â Leona said, somewhat crisply, addressing Selena. He indicated the bag he still carried and added: âI need to put this down, and I think it would be a good idea to show my human where weâll be staying during the holiday.â
âWhy, certainly!â the Queen smiled, and stepped beside Farena and Cheka. âWeâll make sure you two have privacy, yes?â
âThat would be appreciated,â Leona agreed.
âAbsolutely,â smiled Farena, and looked to you. âLunch will be ready soon; one of our servants will go to your room and inform you once itâs done.â
âThank you,â you smiled. âYouâre all very kind.â
âWell,â Farena smirked. âIf our resident sourpuss here likes you so much, there has to be a good reason.â
Leona growled and scowled, but said nothing.
âWe rest our case,â Selena chuckled, then bowed her head once more to you. âPlease, make yourself at home.â
âThank you,â you said again, and the Royal Family turned to leave.
âBye-Bye, Not-A-Pet!â Cheka called out, waving to you as his father carried him off.
The laughter of his parents made your blush return.
âWell,â you sighed, once they were gone, and turned to Leona. âThey seem-â
You froze and gulped nervously at the strict glare you received as he released you and crossed his arms, glowering at you like a father scolding their child. You blushed and rubbed your arm.
ââŚYouâreâŚumâŚs-still mad about me telling Farena that story, arenât you?â
âYou are lucky the kidâs comments on your status made me smile, snack meat,â he returned, and smirked as you flinched a bit at the words and blushed anew. The smirk faded quickly as he then added: âI have to deal with enough from my family and the servants, do NOT embarrass me in front of them.â
âIâm sorry,â you apologized, sincerely and softly. âIâllâŚI didnât mean toâŚâ
âItâs fine,â Leona sighed, and shook his headâŚthen lifted it high and smirked in his usual, sly manner. âWell, letâs not waste time; the sooner I get to my room, the sooner I can get in a quick catnap before lunch.â
So saying, he took hold of your arm, turned and began to walk away, guiding you after him.
âFollow me and stay close,â he rumbled. âI donât want any stray predators thinking youâre a free meal.â
He grinned and added: âThe only one that gets to gobble you up alive is ME.â
You really, REALLY wished him saying things like that DIDNâT somehow sound romantic.
The two of you headed down a long corridor and towards an elevator. You were a little surprised by ELEVATORS in the palace, at first â wasnât this basically just a big house? However, the more you thought about it, and remembered the size of the building itself, the more you realized an elevator made sense. Leona pressed a button and leaned back against the rear wall of the elevator, eyes closed as he folded his arms. For a few moments there was silence, as the hum of machinery filled your ears, and the lift rose steadily.
âYour family seems to like me,â you finally spoke up.
âMm-hm,â Leona grunted, nonchalantly, not bothering to open his eyes.
âThatâsâŚahâŚthatâs a good thing, right?â
Leona opened his eyes and gave you a half-lidded look of mildly annoyed confusion.
âWhy wouldnât it be?â
You smiled thinly, trying to decide how to word things; Leona seemed to pick up on what you were thinking, and snorted before closing his eyes again.
âIf they hadnât approved of you, it wouldnât change anything,â he growled. âYouâre my prey, and Iâm keeping you as long as I want to keep you. And since they do, that means I donât have to deal with them griping and whining about that crap. Iâm not jealous, if thatâs what youâre thinking.â
âI wasnât entirely sure what I was thinking,â you admitted. âButâŚI am happy.â
Leona just grunted again.
You glanced towards the back from the Mystery Shop, then up at his face.
âWhatâs in there?â
Leona smiled slyly, and opened one eye. It glimmered.
âWanted to pick up a present for someone,â he said, simply, then yawned and closed his eyes again. âIâll need to go out again later.â
He paused, then added: âWhen I leave, I want you to stay in my room as much as you can.â
âHow come?â
âItâs easy to get lost in the palace if you donât know your way around,â he responded. âI donât wanna have to go hunting you down for hours because you got stupid and curious.â
âYour concern is touching,â you droned.
Leona just smirked and chuckled, brushing some hair away from his scarred eye.
âIâll make sure one of the servants is around to help out if you need anything.â
âWill they, umâŚbe a lion?â
âLion or lioness, yeah, probably. But donât worry. If they touch you, Iâll bite off their head.â
The graphic image made you shudder, but you couldnât help but feel a flutter in your heart. Heâd spoken it casually and carelessly, as if it was just a foregone conclusionâŚbut all this time, he was soâŚWORRIED about you. About how youâd react to things.
You werenât used to Leona showing that even a little. You smiled and cuddled against his side. The lion-man looked down at youâŚsmirked with affection, and kissed the top of your head.
âSo, any idea what lunch will be?â you suggested.
âDelicious,â Leona responded, without a breath of hesitation, then added, âIf it isnât, I suppose I already have a good lunch set up, donât I?â
He licked his lips and you looked away quickly, red in the face.
ââŚIsâŚs-seriously, is teasing me just YOUR kink?â you stuttered.
Leona purred and tilted your head up with one hand. He leaned close to you, and for a moment, you thought he might kiss you full on the lipsâŚuntil you notice the way his throat was bobbing and heard soft gulping noisesâŚ
You turned redder yet as you realized what he was doing: he was swallowing air, and you had a feeling you knew why. Leona grinned toothily as he finished, then pressed on his belly with his free handâŚ
âŚBefore letting out a deep, guttural belch right in your face.
âUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLKPâŚhaaaaaah,â he sighed, expelling hot, steaming breath over you before finally pulling back. âThat answer your question, Herbivore?â
You blinked, a loopy look on your face and hears practically in your eyes, swaying in place.
âYep,â you said simply.
Leona just laughed.
It was not long after that when lunch was served. Lunch, you found, was far more extravagant than you honestly expected lunch â even at a literal palace â to be. It wasnât a great feast or banquet, granted: yourself, Leona, and his family were all seated in a relatively small chamber that seemed to be a private dining room; not a huge hall, but still richly decorated with a candlelit chandelier over the heads of all. However, the food served was not only of particularly fantastic quality and style, but in pretty large portion sizes. A three course meal had been prepared, starting with an appetizer of antelope stew (which didnât taste too different from venison), followed by a main course of barbequed warthog ribs, and finished off by a bowl of Kaimati â a dish that reminded you of pancake balls, being fried dumplings covered in syrup and powdered sugar â for dessert. You had half-expected some exotic drink to be served up, but simple fruit punch had been the beverage of choice all around.
In all the time youâd known Leona, youâd learned that he was NOT a person for table manners; he ate greedily and gluttonously, without any real restraint, belching loud and proud between bites and demanding more just when anybody thought he was full already. He could eat himself into near-immobility at a rapid paceâŚone of many things you loved about him.
Lunch with Leonaâs family, however, was different. Oh, he still ate a LOT, they ALL did. Even Cheka, it turned out, could eat more than his fair share for his size. You guessed it just had to be a lion thing; big beasts with big appetites, even in demi form. HOWEVER, not a single one of them â not even Leona â ate half as messily as you remembered from Night Raven. Leona was actually quite calm as he ate, and remained largely silent throughout the meal. He kept glancing towards Selena, and you guessed that she may have had something to do with it.
There had been one moment where Cheka had CHOMPED down into his helping of warthog ribs, getting a face covered in barbeque sauce. He had let out a squeaking mew and jumped as he pulled back, cheeks stuffed, blinking in surprise. Leona had snorted with laughter at his nephewâs distress, while Selena frowned and wiped the boyâs face off with a napkin.
âCheka, where are your manners?â she chided. âYou know you canât just go warthog on a meal like that!â
âBut Uncle Leona does it all the time!â Cheka protested innocently. âIâve seen him!â
Leona stopped laughing then, when Selenaâs eye shot towards him, while Farena just rolled his eyes and shook his head, amused by all this as he continued to eat.
As for youâŚyou ate what you could, but there was no way you could finish lion-sized portions, and you felt it would be bad form for you to NOT enjoy everything you could during the luncheon. Thankfully, each of the three adults offered to finish up each course for you: Selena had finished the stew, Ferena had taken the ribs, and Leona himself had indulged in the Kaimati you had left over.
By the time it was all over, the three lions sighed. You blushed bright red as you suddenly found a whole family of predators was surrounding you with round, thick bellies â each one roughly as big as a watermelon.
âOoooohâŚmy tummy feels happy,â twittered Cheka.
âThat goes for all of us son,â Farena saidâŚthen grunted and repressed a rumbling burp with one fist.
âHHHHRRRRLLLLMMMMPHâŚoof, sorry,â he apologized, sincerely. âExcuse me.â
âYouâre excused,â you peeped, hoping you didnât sound as flustered as you felt.
Leona just scoffed.
âWeak,â he mumbled, and Cheka â who, much to his dismay, was seated beside him â giggled and smiled, swishing his tail at his Uncleâs judgment.
âWas lunch to your liking?â Selena asked you.
âOh, I bet they had the time of their lives,â smirked Leona, giving you a teasing smirk as he leaned back slightly, making his rounded belly stick out a bit more.
You blushed bright red, and tried to hide it as you fidgeted in your seat.
âItâŚumâŚi-it was delicious, thank you,â you nodded to Selena.
Leona grinned toothily in a knowing, predatory manner, and licked his teeth.
None of the other three lions seemed to notice, but you sure as Hades did.
âWell, I for one, am stuffed,â sighed Farena.
âSaaaame,â sighed Cheka.
Selena nodded and chuckled, patting her own stomach, indicating she was quite full, too. You saw Leona dip his head and growl softly, and smiled faintly. You knew your kitty, and you knew he could have packed away ALL of the food and probably still had room for a last glass of punch.
âI could go for more,â he said, rather casually and carelessly.
âNow, Leona, you ate more than the rest of us combined,â Selena half-teased and half-scolded. âI think youâve had enough.â
You begged to differ, but said nothing. Leona shrugged, as if it didnât mean anything to him, and took a drink from his punchâŚbut you caught the disappointment in his eyes.
A wicked little decision to correct that issue came to your headâŚand it wasnât long till you found your chance. A clock somewhere struck, and Leona sighed in a world-weary sort of way, as if the clock were Ruggie nagging him about studying for his alchemy exam.
âIâve gotta run,â he grumbled. âIf I donât leave now, too many of the shops will be closed.â
âYou really shouldnât save your shopping till the last minute, you know,â Farena advised. âBy the time you get around to it-â
âWhatever, whatever,â growled Leona, waving him off and brushing some of his mane out of his face. He flicked his tail in your direction and smirked. âNobody touches my snack, alright?â
You blushed bright red. Farena sighed.
âLeonaâŚâ
He didnât finish before Leona turned his back on him and strutted out. Farena looked towards you.
âI hope you donât mind him talking about you like that.â
âTrust me, itâs fine,â you said, omitting the part about how it made you warm under the collar. Judging from the smirk on Selenaâs face, she, if not her husband, could guess it, anyway.
âLeona suggested I stay in our room â his room â till he gets back,â you saidâŚthen smiled timidly. âBut, ahâŚif your royal duties wonât keep youâŚdo you think one of you could give me a proper tour?â
âI will handle any official business that comes our way,â Selena said with a kindly smile.
âYaaaaay! I wanna take Uncle Leonaâs Not-Pet on a tour! Can I, can I? Pleeeeeaaase?â Cheka begged, bouncing in his seat.
âNot alone, son,â chuckled Farena, and ruffled his boyâs hair, before smiling to you. âIâll be happy to show you around.â
âThank you, Your Majesty,â you said.
Farena scoffed.
âNo need for that âMajestyâ nonsense; Farena is fine for you.â
You blinked.
âOhâŚuhâŚthank you, Farena.â
âDonât mention it,â the King said, smiling a little wider, then rose from his seat. He chuckled as Cheka immediately shot out his arms, making little âgrabby handsâ up at his father. With a light growl, the demi-lion king picked up his son, and gave him a little bounce, making him squeal, before settling him around his broad shoulders.
âCome; follow me, and stay close,â Farena said.
âAdventure! Away!â cheered Cheka, puffing out his chest and pointing out dramatically with one hand.
You rolled your eyes and smiled, and followed Farena, giving Selena a parting wave. She bowed her head respectfully, and summoned some servants to clean the table.
As you moved into the hallway and out of the Queenâs earshot, you moved closer to Farena.
âUmâŚYour Majest-I mean, Farena...â
âYes?â
âThereâs one more thingâŚcan I make a special request?â
Farena tilted his head curiously; Cheka, who heard you whispering, tilted his head, too, in the opposite direction.
âI suppose so,â the King said. âWhat is it?â
âItâs my first night in the palace with my boyfriend,â you stated. âIâŚI know you probably eat together as a family all the time, butâŚfor tonight, at dinnerâŚcould I ask that Leona and I be allowed to have some privacy in our room? IâŚwant to get him something special, just between the two of us.â
Farena smiled kindly.
âDamu will have a fit at the change in protocol,â he chortled. âBut then, my brother never really has CARED for it, anyway. Very well: youâll have your private supper tonight. On one condition.â
âWhatâs that?â
Farena grinned toothily.
âYou treat us to some of your cooking on Christmas,â he purred, and winked. âDonât think my little brother didnât tell me about those skills of yours.â
You blushed a little, gulped, then nodded.
âD-DealâŚhehâŚso, umâŚwhat else did your brother tell you anyway?â
Farena smiled mysteriously.
âNow that would be telling, wouldnât it?â
You couldnât be sure, but you had the sinking feeling Farena wanted to end that question with the phrase âsnack meatâ tied on at the end. You remained flustered throughout much of the tour.
Time passed, and the afternoon changed into evening. Leona was taking longer than expected with his shopping, and Farena had come to check and make sure if you wanted to join the family for supper or not. You remained adamant, saying you would have dinner with the group in the days to come, but for your first night, you wanted to have some time alone with your beau.
Farena accepted this with an understanding smileâŚand the moment he was out of the room, you had dialed the phone for a delivery spot you had learned Leona Kingscholar favored. The food was quick to arrive, and you hurriedly got things ready. You were just in time; scarcely two minutes had passed between you finishing the setupâŚand the sound of the door opening.
You jumped and stood almost at attention, startled; Leona always moved so quietly, you guessed it was just a feline thing. Leona grumbled to himself as he entered the room; he had long since changed out of his school uniform into his more casual clothes, and you bit your lip as the way he turned gave you a VERY nice look at the exposed portion of his hip shown by his mustard-colored shirt.
Leona shut the door and sighed, flicking his tail as he put down a large paper bag near the door.
âYou okay?â you asked, almost without thinking.
âDamn stores were PACKED,â snarled Leona. âI know itâs only a week till Christmas, but that still-â
He pausedâŚand sniffed the airâŚthen slowly looked towards you. You smiled, and stepped to one side, revealing your surprise. The lionâs ears pricked up, his tail curled into a question mark shape, and his eyes brightened as he saw a large stack of a dozen cardboard food containers. Each of the boxes was labeled with the name of the same restaurant: Kula.
Just Kula.
It was Swahili for âeat.â
Leonaâs tongue slithered from behind his lips as he licked his chops almost instinctively, then looked up at you.
âYou do know we have dinners here, donât you?â
âYes, but I wanted to make tonight special,â you saidâŚand smiled a bit wider. âFor a start, I know that you didnât get NEARLY enough in your system during lunch.â
Leona was about to answerâŚbut his stomach did that for him as it let out a deep, rumbling growl. He hissed, wincing slightly and placing one gloved hand over his belly, even going so far as to tuck his hand under his shirt to paw at his abdomen directly. You had to fight to make sure you DID NOT blush.
Much.
âVery well, you got me there,â grunted Leona, and smirked. âBut donât fool me by saying this is an early gift for me. Youâve got more thirst than a drought.â
Well, so much for resisting the blush. You ducked your head with a bashful smile and rubbed one arm.
âWellâŚyeah,â you chuckled, lamely, but quickly added: âActually, though, this really IS for you. Seriously.â
Leonaâs smirk faded and he tilted his head curiously. You explained: âIâŚyou mean a lot to me. AndâŚI hope I mean a lot to you. You brought me here, and I appreciate it, itâŚit really makes me feel likeâŚI dunno, sorry, I know you donât do sappy stuffâŚâ
âItâs fine,â Leona snorted, then smirked anew as he swaggered towards you. âWell, if youâre trying to show some appreciation, this is a good way of doing it. For one thing, I donât have to listen to the twerp or his parents for the whole rest of the nightâŚâ
You chuckled a little more fully, and smiled, before glancing back over your shoulder. In a way, Leonaâs private room reminded you of your own home at Ramshackle Dorm; the same could be said for much of the palace. Obviously, the furnishings and sense of style all around were very different, but there was a sense of both age and adaptation here: the palace, by all accounts, had been around for decades, but it had clearly changed with the times, having all the modern conveniences one could hope for. Leonaâs room was the same way: the same tribal masks and large banners or rugs hung on the walls, and there was a zebra skin blanket on his bed, which had ornately carved wooden frameworkâŚbut he also had a TV, electric lights, and other such appliances. It was a very LARGE room, too â even larger than his dorm room back at Night Raven â with a huge window covered by what seemed to by dark red-brown curtains.
âI can put something on for us to enjoy while weâŚor, rather, youâŚeat,â you suggested with a bit of a wider smile.
Leona shrugged.
âIf the foodâs good, it wonât matter,â he growled.
You rolled your eyes and turned on the television; you found a TV music station and decided that would do the trick â not much to distract, but it would suit well enough. Christmas music was playing, which only seemed fitting, as Leona sighed and sat down on his bed. He wiggled his hips a bit to get more comfortable, then picked up one of the boxes.
âWhat did you get?â he asked.
âNyama Choma,â you answered. âAll of it.â
âHmph. That will do,â shrugged Leona, and you smiled as if he had just given you a piece of cake as you moved to sit beside him, while âLet It Snowâ began to play in the background.
You found it weird to hear a song like THAT out in the Savannah, but then again, holiday music seemed to be relatively universal.
Leona frowned at the song playing, and mumbled something about âkitschy,â before opening the box from Kula. His smile returned as he found it filled with the roasted goat meat you had promised â still warm to the touch as he inspected it.
âMmmmm,â Kingscholar rumbled, as he inhaled the savory smell of the meat, then turned to look at you again. âDid you get anything to drink when-?â
He stopped shortâŚthen smirked when he found you standing there, smiling, already holding up two three-liter bottles full of his favorite brand of Root Beer.
âHehâŚyou really are just treating yourself, arenât you?â he purred.
âIf you can be greedy, so can I,â you said, putting the bottles down beside the bed.
Leona rolled his eyesâŚthen patted the space on the mattress beside him. Obediently, you sat next to him. He chuckled and playfully patted your head; you blushed and half-heartedly swiped at his arm. Infuriatingly, this only made him laugh more loudly.
âHere,â he growled. âIf youâre in such a moodâŚâ
He placed the open box in your hands. You looked down at it, then back up at him, in confusion. Leona said nothing; a half-lidded, sultry smile was on his face as he shifted position and lay back on the bed, lounging lazily in the low light. Then, after a pauseâŚhe wordlessly lifted a hand. First he pointed to the box of food, then at youâŚthen, he placed his other hand over his stomach while a single finger pointed towards his open mouth.
You were fairly sure steam was coming off your cheeks. You could take a hint.
You sidled up to Leona till you were closer to his upper half. You then lifted one piece of the roasted meat free; you could smell the seasoning and salt, and saw a trickle of saliva slip from the corner of the half-lionâs jaw as he took in how juicy it appeared to be. His green eyes glittered like glass, the scarred eye flaring up with a look of ravenous delight as he opened his mouth wide. You shivered as you stared into the dark, slimy, steamy orifice of his maw, the pearly fangs parting as his tongue rolled out like a red carpet, eager to enjoy his meal.
A new song had just begun as you thus commenced to feed your favorite kitty: you dangled the piece of meat before his faceâŚand with a growl, Leona snapped it up, slurping and scarfing it down noisily. He rumbled deeply with pleasure, chewing slowly; he sighed through his nose, and you smiled, as he felt the crackle of charred but flavorful exterior contrast with the salty-but-succulent, more tender interior of the roasted flesh.
âIs it good?â you asked, as Leona, GULPed down his first helping.
Leona responded by reaching up and cupping a hand under your chin, pulling you down closer to his faceâŚand thenâŚ
âUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLLLPK!â
He belched right in your face, flashing a cocksure, dominant smile as you squealed and blushed, panting a little bit as the hot, meaty gas blasted your face. Your eyes watered, and you coughed onceâŚbefore giving him a loopy sort of smile.
âIâllâŚt-take that as a yes?â you choked out.
Leona purred and nodded, then released you, patting his belly as he growled out four simple, demanding words: âKeep it coming, Herbivore.â
You had no reason not to do so. Piece by piece, you began to drop chunks of roasted meat into Leonaâs waiting jaws. He snapped them up greedily and eagerly, chomping down and snarling as he did, ripping them up between his teeth as he chowed down hungrily.
GROMPH-CHOMPH-GRULPH-GOBBLEâŚ!
You were always fascinated when watching Leona eat; his wild side was pronounced, and the way he ate made that clear. At lunch heâd had to hold back, but now, he could consume with ravenous abandon. His throat bulged as thick lumps of masticated meat dropped down the chute of his esophagus, and fell into his stomach. His guts gurgled happily as they were given more and more cargo to process. It wasnât long till the first box was empty; you quickly grabbed the second; that was finished within minutes, and the third soon followed.
Every so often as he chomped down the meat you fed him, Leonaâs tongue would flash out and lick your fingers. You blushed; you couldnât tell how many times that was accidental or notâŚbut given the way Leona would lick his lips and give you a hungry look nearly every time, you guessed that it was more often intentional.
âMmmmâŚI canât decide which is more delicious,â rumbled Leona, as he polished off the fourth box, and wiped his mouth on the back of his hand. âThe meatâŚor the food you ordered.â
You blushed more as he grinned toothily and licked his fangs.
âIs this what the holidays are going to be like with you?â You muttered, as you opened the fifth box and dangled a piece of meat over his waiting maw. âEndless days of implications and taunts?â
Leona CHOMPed down the meat, swallowed it â GUUULLLP! â and sighed, sending a wave of his steamy, seasoning-scented breath over you before hissing out one word: âAlways.â
You gulped nervously, while Leona opened his mouth again and let out an expectant growl. You quickly continued to feed him. As Leona ate, his stomach began to groan in a more mechanical manner; his gut started to swell, steadily at first, but then more rapidly and noticeably as he feasted. He was eating well over the portions heâd been served at lunch, and his stomach was starting to press against his shirt, rounding out at an even pace, almost like an inflating balloon. The bigger it got, the more loudly it rumbled and âblorgledâ as it began to grow heavier and more firmly packedâŚ
After glutting himself on the sixth box, Leona grunted and paused; his expression tightened and he hiccuped once â âHIC!â â before thumping his chest twice.
âSomething wrong?â you inquired.
âPressure pocket,â he growled. âWonâtâŚmphâŚwonât come upâŚâ
You bit your lip and paused a momentâŚthen grabbed the first of the three-litter bottles. You offered it to Leona. The demi prince paused, looking at the bottle, then gave you a knowing smile. He didnât say anything, but you heard him âchuffâ with amusement as he took the bottle and cracked it open. A sharp hiss of escaping gas came from the lid; he paused, then unscrewed the cap off fully, before pressing the bottle top to his lipsâŚ
GLUG, GLUG, GLUGâŚ
You watched, your head bobbing almost like a water birdâs, as you watched Leonaâs Adamâs Apple bounce like a rubber ball in his neck. The sugary, fizzy fluid frothed in the bottle as the level decreased swiftly, mouthful after mouthful, drop by drop. You could actually hear the soda as it poured down Leonaâs throat and sloshed into his active stomach, frothing and foaming in the pit of his bellyâŚ
Soon enough, Leona polished off the whole bottle. He carelessly flung it against a wall, smacked his chest, and announced his satisfaction QUITE clearly.
âBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLUUUUUUP!â he belched thunderously, then sighed, and smiled with some relief. âAhhhhhâŚthatâs so much betterâŚâ
You were wondering if it was possible to be any redder in the face. The lingering, sickly-sweet odor of the soda-tinted belch hung in the air around you, and the noise still rang in your ears. Leona smirked as he noticed your reactionâŚand, very obviously just to torment you further, he hooked his fingers on the underside of his shirt, and pulled it up. He didnât have to pull very far: his shirt was already riding up his gut, which was now laid bare before you: the lightly-tanned, smooth belly of your royal boyfriend was so round and so thick, it looked as if he had swallowed a watermelon. A deep, long, loud, low churning sound came rolling up from beneath and behind the small, egg-shaped dot of his stretched navel.
âOhâŚoh, gosh,â you gulped, barely aware of the fact you had spoken at all.
Leona raised an eyebrow and purred, pleased with your reaction.
âYou like what you see, prey?â he purred.
You could only nod dumbly, eyes wide as dinner platters.
Leona grinned wider. He grunted and sat himself up slightlyâŚonly to place one hand on the back of your head, pulling you down with him as he lay back once more. The world seemed to stop turning, and time seemed to stop moving; everything froze in place as you found your ear placed against that big, warbling belly. You werenât sure if you breathed; you knew you didnât move for several moments, simplyâŚlaying there. Letting your head rest against the gut of the greedy lion man.
Leona purred, and began to stroke your hair, rumbling in a possessive, superior manner as you lay there. Every GLLLLRRRRNNNN and BRRRRMMMMLLLLG of his digestive tract was like music in your ears, and you felt your eyes slide closed. For  a little while, nothing mattered but that belly; your mind was vacant of all thought or feeling beyond his stomach.
Then, in between gentle strokings, your boyfriendâs voice filtered back into your mind.
âSomedayâŚIâll take you,â he said, sounding like he was considering it in his own mind, wondering when that someday would be. The tone was casual, but with that sly edge that indicated he was toying with you. âI wouldnât even need to shrink you downâŚtasty little Herbivore; I could swallow you so easilyâŚmake you into part of me. One day I think I might. The belly you love could be your new home.â
You smiled a tiny bit as thought returned; slowly, you found feeling in your hands, lifted themâŚand rubbed the sides of that thick, pumpkin-sized paunch. Leonaâs taunts faded as he moaned and groaned, biting his lips as his eyes fluttered closed, and the hand holding your head down so firmly then fell away.
âOhhhhhâŚmmmmmm, so THATâS why I havenât eaten you yet,â he murmured softly, as if he had to be reminded.
You rolled your eyes, and lifted your head as you scooted closer to Leona, and began to move your hands over the domed expanse of his gut. His skin was soft and supple, with a texture like velvet and silk, and you feel the warmth of his insides radiating up into your fingertips as you caressed them around the circumference of his gut.
âYouâre not full yet, are you?â you asked, as you gave the side of his belly a pat; it made a satisfying sound, not unlike thumping the side of a ripe gourd. Leona grunted and repressed another raunchy burp, swallowing the residual gases back down before answering.
âHHHRRRLLLMMMRRRPHâŚgruhâŚnot even,â he growled, and stopped you as you began to move: âIâll feed myself, prey. Keep rubbing my belly, or Iâll make you my dessert.â
You were never really sure if Leonaâs numerous threats to devour you were serious or notâŚmost days you were sure they werenât, but with him and his attitude, it was honestly hard to tell. And while being his food didnât sound like the worst way you could go (you made a memo to yourself to see a psychiatrist soon), you DID still value your existence.
Besides, a chance to pamper his tummy was NOT an order you even WANTED to obey.
So, you nodded, and began to rub just a little more vigorously. Leona shivered under you, and purred in approval as he lazily reached towards the stack of the six remaining boxes of Nyama Choma beside the bed. He flicked one open and removed his gloves so he wouldnât get them dirtyâŚthen, he pulled his first piece from the box, dangled the juicy-and-yet-crisped piece of food over his open mouth for a moment, as if dangling a mouse by its tailâŚthen â CHOMPH! â he dropped it in, snapped it up, and continued to feed.
Not every piece of meat was boneless; you shivered and paused once or twice whenever you heard the crunching and cracking of the bones in his powerful jaws, reminding you of how powerful he truly was, with or without his magic. A low, irritated growl from the grouchy lion made you snap out of it, and your hands would knead and massage his burgeoning midsection as it continued to swell, inch by inch, with every other bite he took. You ran your fingers along the sides of his belly as he downed his seventh box, and then his eighthâŚas he was working on the ninth, you began to push and prod and poke at his belly, pressing into the tense portions of his tummy.
Leona rumbled with pleasure, but smiled around a mouthful of meat. He swallowed â GRULP! â and chuckled as he tossed the empty container away to pile up with all the rest.
âYouâre needy, you know that?â he grunted.
You looked up at him innocently.
âI donât know what you mean,â you said.
Leona rolled his eyes and tossed his hair.
âTchâŚyeah, sure, right,â he grumbledâŚthen smirked. âCould you try pushing down a little to the left though?â
You tilted your head and experimentally moved your hands slightly to the upper-left of his stomach, and pressed cautiouslyâŚthen let out an âeep!â as his gut ROARED and visibly vibrated in response. A moment later, Leonaâs eyes widened, his cheeks bulged, and the released a booming, bed-shaking burp.
âHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAUUURRRRRP! AhhhhhâŚMUCH better,â he boomed, and SMACKED the side of his belly, letting out a shorter after-burp â âBRUPP!â â and sighing happily as he relaxed.
You wondered if it was possible for one to have hearts in their eyes, like in cartoons.
If so, that, you were positive, was your expression right in that moment.
Leona waved a hand, bidding you to continue; you did so excitedly, sloshing his stomach as you gave it a few playful slaps. It wobbled and jiggled like a water balloon, and the lion grunted and hiccuped before continuing to eat, picking up box number ten and guzzling the roasted meat within. Instead of slowing down, in this last lap of his feast, Leona suddenly seemed to SPEED UP, as if he were eager to get down the final few boxes quickly. The tenth box he ripped into with such zeal, it made you very grateful he rarely used his teeth on you in any wayâŚand the eleventh box, he didnât even seem to CHEW the pieces. You squirmed a bit as you saw him shove the meat into his mouth gluttonously, gulping one hunk of roasted goat after another with voracious abandon.
With the twelfth and final box, Leonaâs rapacity reached its peak, as he didnât even bother eating the meat bit by tasty bit: instead, he flipped the box openâŚand your ministrations to his tummy, which had been slowing since the end of box ten, came to a sharp halt, as he opened his mouth IMPOSSIBLY wide. His taunts about how easily he could swallow you down came back into mindâŚas he dumped the ENTIRE box into his mouth all in one go.
His mouth SLAMMED shut with the strength of a bear trapâŚand Leonaâs face became strained as he dropped the box to the ground, then placed the hand that held it against his throat. His other arm reached up, and you nearly started as he placed his hand upon your shoulder.
If he wanted your attention, he most definitely had it: you couldnât well take your eyes off him, anyway. He growled, grimaced, tossed his head backâŚand thenâŚ
GRRRUUULLLUUUP!
Your own jaw nearly hit the mattress (not literally, naturally) as you saw a MASSIVE bulge slowly slither its way down Leonaâs rippling gullet. His throat buckled and throbbed as the huge lump slid past his collar bone, disappearing behind his chest. Leona beat his sternum with a fistâŚthenâŚ
GRULORSH.
âGuuuh,â Leona groaned out, grandiloquently, as his stomach pushed out further than ever he winced and let out a sound almost like a meow, grinding his jagged fangs in discomfort. You could hear his pants straining; thinking fast, you wrestled their snap-button openâŚ
ZZZRRRIIIP!
BLUGURLSH!
Leonaâs belly surged out further, and he let out another raucous, rollicking burp as the contents were swirled and splashed about.
âBRRRRROOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYEEEEELLLLLLUUUUUURRRRRRRRIIIIIP!â the demi blasted, and sighed deeply with a slight groan. âOhhhhhâŚthat hit the spotâŚâ
He slapped the side of his stomach; it jiggled some more. You bit your lip, and â as Leona crooned and stroked over his engorged gut, which was now almost the size and shape of a medicine ball â you grabbed the second bottle of root beer and offered it to him.
Leona looked at the bottle in your handsâŚand gave you a dry sort of look.
âSerious-URP-mphâŚs-seriously, Herbivore? If youâre so thirsty, why donât YOU drink it?â
You gave him your best âkitten eyesâ and held it out; he growled.
âUghâŚdonât do that; way tooâŚcutesy,â he grumbled.
âSorry,â you apologized. âButâŚheyâŚitâll help wash it all down, wonât it?â
Leona hummed thoughtfully, and scratched at his neck with one finger. He smacked his lips three timesâŚthen shrugged and took the bottle from you.
âGot a point there,â he muttered, and you had to repress the urge to âsquee,â as the kids say, when he cracked the bottle open, and began to chug down his second helping of his favorite soda pop.
GLUG, GLUG, GLUGâŚ!
The thick soup of digesting meat and sugary sweetness was disturbed inside his gut; you could hear the sound â like a waterfall battering on some boulders â as each hearty swallow sent more and more of the bubbly beverage into the belly of your beast-man boyfriend. His gut let out a deep, low, long-lasting âgrooooooooooogâ noise, almost like some deep sea tremor as his taut navel visibly vibrated from the force of it, the gases within stirring up rapidly.
Leona pulled the bottle away and gaspedâŚthen moaned, falling back onto the bedsheets as the empty bottle fell from his hand and clattered on the floor. He groaned, placing one hand on his belly as his tail curled against the sheet-covered mattressâŚhis ears flattening back in mild discomfort as he palmed at his own distended tanker.
âOofâŚoh, ChernabogâŚgruhâŚI feelâŚs-sooooo fullâŚso STUFFEDâŚâ
You smiled and scooted closer, placing a hand gently on his belly; you slowly began to trace one finger around the rim of his navel. Leonaâs ears pricked up and his groans became some of pleasure, a fang biting his lip; you could hear his toes curling.
âNo room left for me, huh?â you crooned, teasingly.
Leona flashed you a wicked but rather weary smile.
âHehâŚdonât count on it, Herbivore. Thereâs always room for YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUU-UUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLLLLP!â
This newest belch â bigger and louder than all the rest so far â actually caught Leona Kingscholar himself off guard. The leonine prince blinked rapidly, one ear flicking, almost like a startled kitten, as the eructation echoed for a couple good seconds after it finally ended.
You refused to comment on how adorable that wasâŚmostly because you wanted to avoid having your entrails become your âex-trails.â
âGood one,â was all you said instead, a little more squeakily than you meant to.
Leona recovered quickly and smirked.
âHehâŚI know,â he growled, and pulled you close to his side. You smiled and snuggled up to his belly, cupping your hand on the underside of his bloated stomach; the softest and warmest part of his belly. As you ever-so-gently caressed and jostled his underbelly, Leona let out a deep sound between a purr and a growl, and pulled to him more tightly.
âMmmmmâŚjuuuuust like thatâŚthatâs it,â he mumbled.
âHappy to please,â you said, and leaned up to kiss his cheek.
Leona growled and snapped his teeth at you half-heartedly. You were proud of yourself when you didnât flinch.
âCareful, Herbivore,â he rumbled, and his breath fell over your face â hot and heavy with the mixture of meat and sugary intensity in his bowels. âI have a reputation, you know.â
âWeâre the only ones here,â you responded, camly, and rubbed his stomach up and down, making him purr more loudly. âDid you enjoy your meal?â
âIt was acceptable,â Leona replied.
He left it at that, but you could tell he had enjoyed it more than he was letting on from the smile on his scarred face. For a moment, neither of you said a word; you kneaded and stroked Leonaâs soft, heavy belly dutifully, giving it all the love and attention it deserved, making sure to press on the parts that made Leona happiest. He purred like a motorboat the whole time.
âThank you,â you said, breaking the silence.
âHm? For what?â grunted Leona, who sounded like he had been about to nod off.
âI dunno,â you shrugged. âA lot of things. IâmâŚwellâŚso far, Iâve really, REALLY enjoyed my time here.â
âWell, aside from Damu,â Leona grumbled.
âHeâs not enough to spoil my day,â you chuckled, then smiled shyly before continuing, as you drew a finger in a heart shape just under his belly button: âEven thenâŚI know you say Iâm just a âpet,â your prey, yourâŚpossession, I guessâŚbutâŚit still means a lot to me that you were willing to stand up for me then. And it means a lot that you wanted me to join you, even though I know you donât like it that much.â
Leona pausedâŚthen pressed on the side of his belly. You heard it bubble loudly, and looked up to his face, almost expectantly, hearing the gases rush up his throatâŚ
Leona smiled down with a softness you hadnât anticipatedâŚplaced a hand to his lips, repressing his next deep burpâŚ
âHHHMMMRRRLLLLMMMRRRLLLMPHâŚphoosh.â
âŚAnd blew the residual gases, almost like a kiss, into your face.
Your eyes watered, but your smile was absolutely smitten. Leona chuckled and ruffled your hair teasingly.
âHaving my favorite Herbivore hereâŚand a full belly besidesâŚthat makes it a little more worth it,â he said.
You smiled wider, and nuzzled against him.
Things were silent for a little longerâŚor, at least, relatively. Your boyfriendâs greedy guts still churned and sloshed like a factory vat full of creamâŚand distantly, the Christmas music on the radio began to re-enter your mind. You smiled, eyes closed, and softly began to sing to yourselfâŚ
âI really canât stayâŚâ
âBaby, Itâs Cold Outside.â
The unexpected reply caught you off guardâŚbut you smiled wider as you went on with the song.
âIâve got to go âwayâŚâ
âBut, Baby, Itâs Cold OutsideâŚâ
You sighed through the next set of lines as you grabbed a fistful of lion belly, and then let it snap back into place, the gut jiggling and making Leona let out a soft, short burp you almost didnât catch.
âThis evening has beenâŚâ
âBeen hoping that youâd drop in.â
ââŚSo very nice.â
A chuckle preceded your hand being held in one of Leonaâs own.
âIâll hold your hands, theyâre just like ice,â he hissed.
As the song went onâŚyou werenât sure when or how it happened, but positions changed. You went from being beside LonaâŚto UNDER him. His hands fell to either side of your head as he grinned down at you; his green eyes glowed in the dim lighting and shadows of his wild, dark mane, and his teeth glittered in a way that was both dangerous andâŚalmost intoxicating to behold. His huge gut spilled down on top of you; the weight of his belly alone was more than enough to keep you in place, and warmed you up more than any quilt did.
You gulped and had to compose yourself at the hungry, HUNGRY look in his eyesâŚand with a nervous giggle, eventually continued the song.
ââŚI-I ought to say âNo, No, No, sirâŚââ
Leona rumbled and leaned down further, the weight of his body pressing on your slightly more as his face drew nearer to yours.
âMmmmâŚmind if I move in closer?â
You peeped out the next line.
ââŚAt least Iâm gonna say that I tried.â
Leona growled, and whispered into your ear: âWhatâs the sense of hurtinâ my pride?â
You almost whimpered and trembled.
âI really canât stayâŚâ
âBaby, donât hold outâŚâ
You finished together, looking into each otherâs eyes.
âBaby, Itâs Cold Outside.â
That is when your lips and his crashed together.
As the greedy prince gripped you tightly in a domineering but protective way, and you accepted each of his desperate affectionsâŚneither of you were ever aware of a shadow that showed in the light that peeked out from under the doorframe.
Nor were you aware of a sneering voice as the shadow moved away, and footsteps signaled a figure treading down the hall.
âRiff raff,â the voice growled out of earshot.
If you had known the voice and shadow were presentâŚperhaps your mind would not have thought that evening was quite as breathtaking as it seemed.
Your holiday had begunâŚbut it was far from over.
The End
