Fanfiction is one of the only mediums where I get massively revved about those “it was all a dream/hallucination” twists. Those things are generally reviled, but in FANFIC? It’s like when a video game screws with the 4th wall to creep you out. It’s a subversion of expectations that relies so fully on the type of storytelling you’re doing.Â
Because you can click a fanfic and go, “And these two beloved characters who are dead in canon are here and alive with zero explanation? Well, of course they are! All fanfics pretend Blorbondo never died. He’s Blorbondo.” You can click a fic like, “These mortal enemies who have been playing a murderous cat and mouse for all of canon are now in school together gushing about [thing you bet is the author’s special interest] and blushing every time their hands brush? Yeah, that sounds per the course.”Â
These are expected within fanfiction. You don’t question them. They’re a given. So then when things get all freaky weird and the author starts showing us this is all fake, I’m like, “!!!!!!!!! You’re right! Yes it is! MC is TOTALLY dreaming up a wonderful world where Blorbolorbo is still alive and the biggest worry any of the Trauma Gang has is who is taking who to Prom. This is not at all how things are in the story this fanfiction is based off of.”
I don’t just tolerate it. I get hype. You tricked me you got me you had me goingÂ
