Stop fighting technology and start using it to teach!
Many of us spend too much time worrying how to get students to pay attention to us instead of their mobile devices. Now that so many resources are available online it makes sense that students should use them to fact check and extend the learning. The challenge is balance. How do we (educators) integrate technology into our teaching without overwhelming them (students)? There are several methods that have proven successful, one of which is the "digital exit ticket". Here the student demonstrates their understanding of the material in the course through a simple assessment at the end of the class. This week I will start at a very small international school in the Caribbean. By very small, I mean 10 or less students in a classroom, and currently 54 as the total population.
The resources are virtually non-existent; The school runs not-for-Profit off of tuition and fundraising, and enrolment is at an all-time-low with economic difficulties. This will pose me some wonderful opportunities to be a creative teacher in how I present lab and inquiry opportunities in the classroom. However, each student has their own laptop. That’s why I love this resource so much.
The programs to utilize are endless, free, and so simple. The video gives two excellent examples of how digital exit cards have been used masterfully in high school classrooms and resources for how to do it yourself!
