Had these two on my brain recently and wanted to flesh out their history.
Moe and Darla met as young recruits in the military and did not get along. Moe's laidback attitude rubbed Darla the wrong way, and Moe thought Darla was such a stiff. In a cruel twist of fate, the two were assigned as partners, despite their vocal disapproval. But Moe figured, since they were stuck together for the foreseeable future, might as well have some fun. She made it her mission to try and ruffle Darla's feathers. Their conversations were charged and passive aggressive, always trying to one up each other with snide remarks. Moe reveled in making the bird's composure break.
Eventually, Darla had enough. She hated that this red bitch got on her nerves. Their terse relationship finally explodes into a rivalry when Darla challenges Moe to a duel, the plan to finally put this hyena in her place. To her surprise, Darla finds herself actually enjoying the fight. They both do. They found an outlet to vent their frustrations. More duels are issued, tension builds between them. Feelings of fondness begin to bubble up, and are stanchly denied. One thing leads to another, and the two find another type of duel to compete in.
Despite their interactions being mostly snarky sexual tension, the two did share quieter moments and did enjoy each other’s company. You could even say they liked each other. However, their relationship was short-lived, as the two had conflicting views on where they wanted their careers to go; Darla wanted to rise up the ranks, Moe wanted to stay more grounded. Darla was adamant that Moe was throwing an amazing opportunity, and if she couldn't see how stupid of a decision it was then maybe it was best they went their own ways (all said with the emotional depth of a brick wall). Moe shrugged, Darla scoffed, and the two split on bittersweet terms.
Moe would go off on her own path and the two wouldn’t see each other for about 30 years. Darla went on to rise the ranks and become a commander, just as much of a hardass as she’s always been. And Moe spent some years as a bodyguard before eventually marrying the love of her life Kahina and having their daughter, who they’ve been estranged from since she was a baby. Spending time and trying to reconnect with her now adult child and hometown leads Moe to meet Darla again, and there’s a brief silence before Darla is swooped with hugs and that loud, cackling laugh right in her ear (much to the horror to her recruits, she doesn’t break this woman’s arm immediately).
The two are on relatively good terms, but there’s an awkwardness in the air as Moe tries to bridge the gap. Moe genuinely wants to reconnect as friends, but Darla seemingly wants to keep it professional. Despite the fact that she may or may not have been hiding how much she was affected by the breakup…oh dear.
