Here's WIP from the next chapter of The Matriarch: The Morena Dekarios Story.
Our dear Morena (26) has arrived on Evermeet!
...because the elves were so strict about their secrecy, reliable firsthand accounts were practically nonexistent, and every text she found only contradicted the last. Some books described a dark and thickly forested island where elves lived in treehouses connected by rope bridges. Others claimed Evermeet wasn’t an island at all, but a floating city that vanished into thin air if an outsider sailed too close. Then there was the colorful account by Volothamp Geddarm, which was so wildly inaccurate that she wondered if he had ever even been to the island at all.
She had set her expectations so high, that when she did see the real thing it was almost a bit of a let down.Â
The capital city of Evermeet, Leuthilspar, sat at the edge of a massive tidal estuary where the lower watershed of the River Ardulith met the saltwater of Leuthilspar Bay. At its heart, the city center was built over several steep hills, all interconnected by grand boulevards lined with uniform, perfectly manicured trees. The architecture was unique, appearing as if seamlessly carved from solid white stone, topped with emerald-tiled roofs, and defined by delicate arched entryways and sweeping balconies. On the highest hill sat the Moonflower Palace, giving the city’s skyline its peak with that same elegant architecture. Yet, while the spires of the city center catching the sunlight were breathtaking, the rest of the settlement, though still beautiful, resembled a typical working city. The streets were filled with bright awnings over street cafes, flower boxes outside of friendly shops, and bustling taverns. Elves walked the sidewalks, chatting with friends, and parks were filled with laughing children. To Morena, it really didn’t seem that different from parts of Waterdeep.
“What do you think?” Revalor had asked her as they rode in a carriage after they first arrived through the fairy ring.
Morena looked out the window, as they rode past a row of townhomes nestled along a city park. “It’s nice.”
