Moby was a cult figure in the making, but he somehow epitomized the 90's electronic scene. His finale for the period, Play, ended up as the album that defined him thanks to the success. Please, forget all the cliches about the LP – the tale that the enormous sales occurred thanks to all the tunes on the platter being heavily licenced should be taken with a grain of salt – and hear Play for what the record ultimately is, i.e. the last ditch effort from someone who almost gave up. Moby assumed this would be his epitaph, which provides Play with a sense of hopefulness in away, since he thought he would be free afterwards. He was, he never had to worry about the money again, yet his career changed completely thanks to him no longer being an underdog.
