I think their feelings were always real, they just weren’t given the opportunity to build a relationship on anything other than death and deceit. To say their love has been battle-tested is an understatement, haha. The fact that they managed to cultivate it in spite of all that is part of what makes them so great. 💕

I’m prone to over analyze so I try not to overthink things I enjoy and risk spoiling it. Simply:
I like Katniss.
I like Peeta.
I like them together.
They’ve got a little bit of the ‘opposites attract’ thing going, but also at their core they’re both kind, passionate, and inspiring. They deserve a happy ending… That their happiness includes each other makes it all the sweeter.

No, I absolutely do *not* believe that Katniss settled for Peeta. It’s obvious from the very beginning of the first book that she’s kept tabs on him since he threw her the bread, similarly to how he’s kept tabs on her. She is dismayed when he’s reaped alongside her, and very hurt when it appears that he’s working with the Careers to eliminate her during the Games.
And that’s just the first book/movie.
We know that Katniss was afraid to fall in love because she saw what it did to her mother when her father was killed, which is a perfectly reasonable trauma response to what happened. But even despite that, she couldn’t help but admit that her feelings for Peeta were far beyond just “friends” that evening on the Quarter Quell beach. Stating that she would be “damaged beyond repair” if Peeta dies does not sound like she’s settling to me.

I don't think Katniss settled for Peeta at all. She is not the type to settle for anything! Our girl is a fighter and she chose Peeta in the end.
"On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.
So after, when he whispers, “You love me. Real or not real?”
I tell him, “Real.” "
Katniss tells him "Real." She loves Peeta and saw a future with him where there is rebirth, goodness, and hope.
Can I also add this? 😁 Just look at this kiss. Is that what a person settling for second fiddle looks like? 😅

No I think she was in love with him for a while. I do think the epilogue makes the children question like it was a pushed issue but I don’t think it’s in keeping with the characters so more likely it’s a text issue.
