While Western Christianity prefers the written word and dialogue as vehicles to communicate their beliefs to others, Islam has traditionally preferred the 'spoken word' and debate. Yet, we don't teach how to do either in our Bible schools and seminaries. In London we are beginning to change that by introducing the need to proclaim the gospel through the spoken word and debates. The newest historical material we now have on the dating of the earliest Qur'anic Manuscripts (Mushafs) is breaking new historical ground. These findings have an impact on not only the authenticity of the earliest Qur'ans, but also on who Muhammad was, as well as the whole scope concerning how Islam emerged. This new material has just come to light in the last two years (2012 - 2014) and is proving to be a real 'game changer' for those of us engaging publicly with Islam, especially within the academic environment, where the significance of these findings will have the greatest impact.

  When Peter the Venerable wanted Christians to engage in critical dialogue with Muslims he had to realise that "there was no one who answered, since there was no one who understood." So he commissioned the first Latin translation of the Qur'an and tried to convince the brightest mind of his time to refute it. We can learn from his example and also from his failures. In this talk we will also detect some of Peter's shortcomings by comparing his argumentation to that of four other apologetic works from other eras.
