MEET ME BY THE WILLOW TREE || HERMES X READER ||
Chapter Two; Hazel.
<-PREVIOUS||NEXT->
You stood at your locker, quickly sliding on your coat and hat. You had been restless since lunch. Was Hermes actually going to meet you outside? Your mind had been plagued by him since lunch. You had been finding it difficult to pay attention in class. You sighed. You shouldn't be letting him make you unable to focus. You'd best study soon. You didn't want to get behind.
Your parents weren't going to be happy. You had never brought anyone home without at least a day or two of planning with them first. Let alone someone they probably hadn't met. Then again you had never tried.. maybe they'd be ok with it?... Yeah, probably not. Not like you had much of a choice though. You could try turning him away, but given how enthusiastic he was and how awkward you were around people you weren't used to talking to (and or people who you found really really pretty. He was both of those things.) it probably wouldn't work. You flinched. You'd better brace yourself for a scolding from your mother.
You tossed your backpack over your shoulder, gently shutting your locker. As you turned to make your way to the doors, you were cut off by a familiar face blocking your way.
"Hey Aspie!" You exclaimed, giving her a slight grin. Honestly, this was a pretty bad time, but whatever.
Aspasia stood before you, a wide smile on her face. "Hi <Y/N>!" She called brightly. "I was thinking we could walk home together today! It'll be easier to take our minds off the cold if we're together!" She suggested. You froze. Oh Primordial Beings, why did she have to ask this today? Any other day you would've been eager to! You loved her, but she was quite a gossip. If she found out Hermes, who probably wouldn't want to admit that he needed tutoring, was trying to go home with you.. well news would fly fast. And you did not want to have to be the new main character of the week. You could ditch him... You internally shook your head. That felt like kind of a douche thing to do. He had confided in you, and he seemed so hopeful.. But she was your friend! You didn't want to have to turn her away. You'd regret to miss her company.
You sighed internally. You didn't have much time left to ponder this dilemma before your silence became odd.
"Uhh-, how about tomorrow?" You suggested. It was the first words you were able to muster, so you spoke them. Her brows furrowed slightly, confusion dawning on her face. Shoot. You were never a quick liar. "Sorry- I uhm.. was thinking I'd go to the store to grab snacks today before I got home. I wouldn't want your parents to worry." You spoke slowly, and almost flinched at how unnatural your words felt. You felt your stomach twist in guilt, a bead of sweat forming on your face.
She looked skeptical but nodded. "Alright. Tomorrow then." She agreed. She definitely did not believe your lie, but didn't press you further either. She turned and left, an air of disappointment surrounding her. You winced, the guilt growing heavier. You didn't want to push her away! Heavens, you had never lied to her like that before! What if she thought you were hiding something? Well, ok, you were, but what if she thought you didn't trust her?! Agh, you wish you could just explain everything to her, but that'd be unfair to Hermes, wouldn't it? Oh well. Too late to change anything now, you supposed.
You exhaled, making your way to the exit you were taking. Normally, you took the side doors out, since it was closer to your locker, but he specifically said the main doors. So that's where you'd go.
You felt the claws of anxiety rake down your spine. What if he wasn't there and you just lied to your best friend for nothing? What if the story about failing math was just made up and he was just planning to humiliate you? He was a popular kid, why would he waste his time with someone who clung to the shadows and was terrified of attention? Besides, he was rich! What was stopping him from just.. hiring an actual tutor? Someone who had, oh you don't know, experience with this sort of stuff? That question lingered a bit longer than the others. Yeah wait, that would make way more sense. If he clearly didn't want the news he was failing math and needed tutoring getting out, why was he risking asking a random classmate me barely knows for help?!
Still, despite your mix of perfectly logical (and fine, maybe a few illogical) fears, your heart was racing at the thought of seeing him again.
And sure enough, he was, in fact, actually there. He wore a wide grin on his face at the sight of you, along with fairly minimal seasonal attire. Some gods weren't as affected by temperature as other divine creatures, so you wouldn't be surprised if it was more for decoration than to actually keep warm. You felt heat rise to your face seeing his excited reaction.
"Err- Hi." You spoke flatly, trying not to portray how nervous you felt. Oh gosh, did that sound rude? Hopefully he didn't interpret the lack of emotion as disinterest or boredom or annoyance- Should you say something else? You didn't want to come off as weird or anything- gosh had you made things awkward?
"Greetings, darling~!" He exclaimed, full of energy, and an expression on him that seemed blissfully unaware of the turmoil coursing through your head. "I was starting to worry you wouldn't show up! I suppose it's good though, since there's less people around now, and all that stuff. Not that I care much what others think, but I'd say after about the say, fifth fling rumor, it starts to get a bit tiring." He rambled, rather cheery.
You blinked, startled. "Ah. I- don't really like.. attention very much... So I guess it's also good. For me." You muttered awkwardly, wincing. You were hopeless. You really needed to get it together. He gave you a sort of odd look, as if something clicked in his brain. You cleared your throat. "Sorry to keep you waiting. Ran into a friend." You stated, trying to make your voice a bit stronger this time.
"Oh, that's perfectly fine, dear. Shall we get going?" He spoke, tilting his head, extending a hand to you. You froze a bit. Titans below, you must have looked like a deer in headlights. Was your face red? You hoped it wasn't red. He chuckled, and you hesitantly took the hand he had offered, avoiding eye contact. You knew he was very touchy with pretty much everyone, but you certainly were not used to it.
"Follow me." You sighed, turning towards the path towards your home. "Just a warning, my parents won't be expecting a guest, so they might be a bit.. startled." You added, looking away from his face.
"Oh dear, I'm not getting you in any trouble, am I?" He asked, tilting his head. You hesitated.
"I'm.. not sure, honestly. They'll probably just scold me, but as long as you behave well enough I think I should be fine?" Your answer came out slow, as if you were thinking as you spoke.
"I'll be on my best behavior then!" He exclaimed brightly, doing a mock salute and grinning. You let out a small chuckle despite yourself, causing his eyes to sparkle.
"Thanks." You responded, a smile creeping onto your face.

"I'm bored, can we take a break?" He pouted, though his tone was light-hearted. You rolled your eyes playfully. Somehow, you had managed to calm yourself down, letting yourself focus on numbers and equations rather than the look he was giving you. The two of you had arrived about a fifteen minutes ago, you quickly explaining the situation to your mother. She was.. hesitant, but let you off with a warning to plan with her or your father next time, along with telling you to leave your bedroom door opened if you wanted to work in there. You obliged.
"We've barely even started." You noted, raising a brow. Though, you couldn't help but smile. "Weren't you supposed to be desperate for tutoring or something?"
"Oh, but we've already accomplished so much, haven't we darling? Surely we've earned a little break time~?" He spoke smoothly, seemingly trying to use his charms to his advantage. You felt heat rise to your face, but you shook it off, trying to keep your defenses up.
"We've only finished four problems..." You trailed off, trying to avoid eye contact. His eyes widened, an almost innocent look to them.
...He was doing the puppy dog eyes again. "Pretty please?" He asked, vibrant hazel eyes sparkling as he blinked, his lashes fluttering.
Admittedly, it was working. "..Oh fine." You huffed. His grin widened. "What do you want to do anyways?" You asked, tilting your head.
"Just talk, really. Like uhm.. What's your favorite color?" He asked, tilting his head. You paused, surprised at the question. You gave it, asking him for his. "Green! Ooh, but I also love orange. It's hard to say, really." He answered. He looked across your room, seemingly taking in the surroundings.
His gaze locked on your wall of drawings. His eyes lit up. "Oh! Right, you like drawing, correct?" He questioned, scurrying over to get a closer look at the papers you had taped to the wall. You felt yourself sink deeper into the cushion you sat on, embarrassed.
"I uhm- draw a lot of my classmates. It's good practice." You quickly explained, wincing knowing what he was going to see. You heard a delighted gasp from him.
"Is this me? Darling, it looks amazing! Are you in the art club, by chance?" He exclaimed brightly, gently grabbing the paper, careful not to pull it off the wall. "Oh wow, there's a lot of me." He uttered, eyes darting place to place.
You felt your face glow a faint, rosy red. There were at least four drawings of him up there. "You have uhm- interesting features to-"
"Can I keep one?" He interrupted.
The tension in your shoulders dropped slightly. "Oh. Yeah, that's ok. You can take all of them if you want, honestly." You replied, startled.
He grinned, peeling the tape of one of the drawings off the wall. "Ooh! Is that one Dio? Oh he'd love that! You should start showing these to people!"
"Err- I'd rather not." You muttered. After taking another moment to look up at your sketches, he moved to the other side of the room, allowing himself to fall down onto your bed.
"I must say, it's quite cozy in here. I approve of your interior design." He commented, staring up at the ceiling while he sunk into your mattress.
Your jaw dropped slightly, face red as a poppy, heart beginning to pound in your chest. "I- thank you, but please get out of my bed." You protested. He sighed, getting up and wandering back to the cushion he was seated at earlier. "Anyways, I have a question." You spoke, calming yourself.
"Shoot it." He replied, tilting his head.
"Your family is like.. loaded, right? Couldn't you just have hired an actual tutor?"
He paused, before shrugging. "If I did, Zeus would find out, and then he'd check my grades and probably kill me. It's better if he just thinks I'm out canoodling or something." He responded casually, as if that made any sense to you.
"Hang on, do your parents even know where you are? Did you tell them you'd be going home with someone else?"
"Nah, Zeus doesn't really care. Ares just straight up disappeared for a couple of weeks once. Me and Artemis had to go off and find him ourselves. Though, to be fair he is father's least favorite. Poor soul."
Your jaw dropped. "But what if something happened to one of you? Would he even know?"
He shrugged once more. "He wouldn't care. I'm better off dead than a failure in his eyes." He answered, tone still casual, as if this were normal. "Anyways~! I've been drafting up this wonderful prank idea to pull on Ms. Demeter, and I'd love to hear your feedback!" He shifted the subject, and you felt like a rug had been pulled from beneath your feet.
"Are you really just going to change the subject from that..?"
"Yes." His voice was firm as he spoke, final. "So I was thinking I'd swap out all of her markers before class and-"
You listened absently as he spoke, thinking on what he had said previously.

"You should probably get going, my father's going to begin cooking dinner soon." You cut in, pushing aside the papers the two of you had been working on, looking up at the clock.
"Oh! Yes, sorry. I'd hate to stay longer than I should. My siblings will get worried if I'm gone too long anyways." He exclaimed, sitting up.
You hesitated. "I can uhm- walk you back to your place, if you want." You offered, trying to pretend your heart hadn't sped up again. His eyes lit up.
"That would be nice." He responded, voice oddly soft. He reached behind him, stuffing his arm through the sleeve of his coat he had discarded on the floor earlier. You reached for your own, which you had placed on a hook on your wall. "So, should I meet you outside again tomorrow?" He asked, lips tugging upwards.
"Uhm- Sorry, I promised I'd walk home with one of my friends tomorrow." You answered awkwardly. "Friday, maybe?" Two days from now. Your heart fluttered at the prospect. He nodded. "I'll make sure to ask my mother later."
~~~
You walked beside him in the cold air of the winter night, steps light on the icy concrete. The freezing air cut through straight to your skin, causing you to shiver. "Ugh, I can't wait another second for spring to finally begin... this cold is unbearable." You muttered, shaking out your arms in hopes to warm them up.
"Ah, the woes of a nature spirit." He teased, sounding amused. "Here, want to trade coats?" He offered, tilting his head. You shot it a skeptical look, and realized he was probably being sarcastic, considering how thin his was.
"Look, you could've easily worn something warmer-"
"I meant it, darling. This one's enchanted." He was already beginning to pull it off, ready to hand it to you.
You paused in slight shock. "Oh. You don't have to..."
"I insist."
Hesitantly, you took your own coat off, taking his. Your first thought was that he was definitely right about the enchantment thing. It enfolded you in warmth, almost like a hug. "Wow.. Thank you, really." You uttered, blinking. "You won't be too cold without it or anything, right? I wouldn't want to-"
"I'll be fine. You're literally a plant, dear." He reasoned, putting on your coat.
"I wouldn't quite say literally.." You muttered, but didn't protest further. You tried to pretend you weren't entirely flustered at his act. Stars above, you were wearing something of his now. His eyes glowed in the low streetlight, deep hazel pools, almost like a pond, golden flecks shining within. Titans below, he was beautiful... You tried to shake the thought away but... "You have really pretty eyes." You blurted, immediately regretting it. Shoot. Heavens, why were you so stupid?
The eyes in question went wide. Were you imagining that rosy hue his cheeks had begun to glow? "I'm sorry-"
"No. Uhm- thank you. You're.." He shook his head, almost looking as if he were scolding himself for what he was about to say. "We're actually getting fairly close to my place, I should.."
You swallowed nervously. Gods, you had made it awkward, hadn't you? You had managed to screw everything up. "Ah. Do you want the coat back, then..?"
"No. Keep it, I have more. Just uhh.. meet me at the willow tree again at lunch tomorrow, will you?" He spoke, lips creeping up into a small grin.
"Oh- yeah, of course."
"See you then, darling~!" He exclaimed, leaning in and giving you a bop on the nose. You felt yourself redden at his touch, and watched as he walked off.
As he disappeared, turning a corner, you tried to push back the sting of regret you felt. You had messed things up, hadn't you? Sighing, you turned, beginning your journey back to your own place of residence.
