Ibex Band — Stereo Instrumental Music (Muzikawi)
The Ibex Band made more than 250 albums during their 1970s and 1980s Addis Ababa run, birthed another crucial Ethio-jazz outfit called the Rohas Band and splintered to turn up in ensembles you might have heard of, Mulatu Astatke’s band among others. Yet, today, in the listen-to-anything-from-any-time era of recorded music, most of their output has been lost, all of which makes this 1976 recording an astonishing find. It captures two sets laid down at the Ras Hotel and Ghion Hotel and recorded by Swedish engineer Karl-Gustav Lundgren, on behalf of Radio Voice of the Gospel in excellent fidelity. It’s even in stereo, as the title proclaims, capturing the sinuous grooves, the body-stirring rhythms, the squalling sax, the wailing organ one of Ethiopia’s finest dance bands at the top of its game.
