Lately I’ve been reading quite a bit about mid-to-late twentieth century New York, and as someone who is neither from the city nor ever visited, the spectacular glamour and grotesque violence of it all seems not just disjointed but ridiculous. How does such horror and romance exist simultaneously, even in concordance, even in harmony? 

Naked City, in my ears, puts New York’s contradictions and apparent incoherence in musical form. The sensational wealth and camp drama, the flourishing art and vibrant internationalism, the brutal, brutal violence and chasms of inequality – it’s all here in a collagic portrait of precisely composed, revelatorily vivid scenes.

The third great Miles Davis Quintet from a concert in Copenhagen

In 1969, Miles Davis led a quintet comprised of Wayne Shorter on tenor and soprano, keyboardist Chick Corea, acoustic bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Jack DeJohnette.

That particular group never had a chance to make a studio recording but fortunately music from some of their live performances have since surfaced.

This version of “Directions” is from a Copenhagen concert and is taken from a medley of songs; Davis tended to play continuous music during each set.

While the trumpeter and Shorter on tenor have short statements, Corea’s inventive improvisation takes honors.
