I always love your depiction of Erlang, so I’m just wondering what role he plays in your different aus?
Ah Erlang~
I think he is such an interesting character, as to me, I see him as a good parallel to Wukong. Generally I don’t think he is ever an “evil” character. Can definitely be a antagonist to Wukong in certain situations, but so is everyone if Wukong is causing problems or what not 😆
Taken: antagonist. He is a villain to MK and Xiaoxiao as they don’t understand his motivations or why he is out to kill them when they eventually meet. I consider him like… weirdly like the phantom from phantom of the opera. He had unrequited feelings for Macaque, but didn’t know a healthy way to handle that love. He just assumed because he feels this way, then it isn’t wrong (which technically it isn’t) but his execution to show that love was wrong.
When Wukong was trapped below the mountain, he saw there was potentially a chance to win macaque over, and went for it. It was macaque though that then used those feelings and personally went to Erlang to trick him to steal the scroll that was sealing away the Brotherhood.
This one action forever sealed Erlang’s betrayal to Shadowpeach and forever made him an antagonist hell bent on ruining their lives, as he had never felt that kind of love before, and felt these two forever tainted him and those feelings.
He just grow obsessive over it during the years, unable to think of anyway to get revenge- until their children appear. He finally found a means for his revenge. He’d taint their own love- and destroy it.
The tragedy of six: a villain turned hero, I suppose. Never is Erlang out to hurt shadowpeach, or the brotherhood, or their children. His soul goal was to get rid of the jade emperor. He helped the wrong person, and it resulted in the whole world turning upside down.
Plus, with her attack, the jade emperor was killed. With the person he despised most gone, he finds himself… empty. Purposeless. He sticks around LBD/ the kids and Nezha because he has nothing better to do. He is lost.
Despite this, he doesn’t feel necessary guilt for his actions. He doesn’t feel he has to prove himself to Wukong, or any of the brotherhood, or earn forgiveness. As they were never anything to each other.
The children however.. through years by their side, essentially assisting to raising them, a bond does grow. And that is where guilt comes into the picture. He still doesn’t care about the struggles of other demons or celestials, but these kids?
They are different. Even if he struggles to show so. He won’t let harm come to them. They become his purpose
Big family (and literally every other au): he isn’t enemy or ally really. He is a celestial that might or might not have had some beef with Wukong in the past, but that is only because the celestial court demanded he bring Wukong to them.
Otherwise, I typically have him being a neutral third party. Someone who can give Wukong a run for his money if he wants to, but never wants to.
Envious of Wukong’s relationships at times, but respects him too. Sometimes even considers Wukong someone of mutual understanding.
Damn what are you doing here
