gettin my baroque on this fine weekend
pulling a full-on Mulan here I see
comin in hot
the quintessential operatic line
area twink dances to the praises of love as world-weary cross-dresser has silent panic attack
tell me you're a disaster bi without telling me you're a disaster bi
o...okay...
I feel like i should be looking away
SHE
the genderfuckery continues
Erismena just third wheeling it over here bleeding out while Aldimira and Orimeno pretend to be straight
everyone's expressions here i am dying
Alcesta was written for an alto but apparently the role has a bit of history of being played by male performers. I don't mind the genderbending there but if you're already replacing my mezzos with countertenors the least you could do is keep the alto in there
literally countertenors are only acceptable in baroque opera if they're allowed to be raging bisexuals
the dramatic irony is almost painful
oh dear
wait what ew he's old enough to be your dad
asdfghjkl
ngl this is pretty cool
this opera is just about a bunch of ladies being madly in love with each other
oh dang
more to come as tumblr is requiring me to make a new post

Erismena part 3
I love them your honor
gonna check on my "''bro'''' my buddy my pal
:(
done
again? will these kids ever catch a break?
each trying to defend the other and nobly prevent their accidental companion's death and king's just like fuck that you're both annoying
i don't like the sound of that
oh shit
and there it is
that escalated quickly
that's better
okay we're going shirtless now are we
what exactly as comic about all that (tho i do have some suspicions based on a few other lines that this translation is a bit off)
okay i take it back that line is hilarious
another surprise family reveal
the most awkward hug in history
once again Aldimira fails to read the room
Alcestaaaaa
that awkward moment when...
to say the fucking least
I think Erimante is regretting getting out of bed this morning
oh thank god
at least one of her boyfriends doesn't have some surprise identity
pretty sure Alcesta and the king are makin eyes at each other there
lovely.
but I'm so curious what happened with Flerida?? and is anyone going to tell Clerio that Idraspe isn't dead? and is Agrippo like a creep or okay or what's his deal I cannot read that guy
overall I really enjoyed this! genderfuckery abounds so i can't even imagine how ridiculously queer this must be when there are more mezzos. The story was kind of hard to follow at first and a lot of the names are so similar it got confusing. but the characters are so fun and I love (most of) them and the performers were great! The set and costumes were really cool too, just funky enough and not distracting and the lights were so cool. And of course I loved the music, that early baroque stuff just sweeps me off my feet; I know a lot of people don't like how there aren't a lot of individual arias/ensembles but I just love how all the pieces flow into each other. it's lilting and lovely and this production handled it really well with the smooth scene changes and character entrances and exits.
great way to start Week #3!
Erismena part 2
again. the faces.
gay
also pretty
uh oh
cowards cut the lights right before the diva smooch
solid point tenors take note
"my girlfriend betrayed me so i'm gonna DANCE again" solid coping skill tbh
unchained she just goes around flirting with everybody and we stan
uh look who's talking
another quintessential opera line
cross-dressing cougars and booze in the baby carriage this is so mel brooks i can't believe people think opera is boring
i love how these early baroque operas have a bunch of random side characters with silly little storylines who occasionally insert themselves into the main plot it's kind of like they're sitting there watching and laughing as the main cast fucks everything up
come on Aldimira read the room
she doesn't seem to have a problem with that
THIS ARIA IS SO GORGEOUS AND SO IS SHE
Flerida changes her tune
Agrippo is a feminist
or not
little lightbulb just out here jammin
dang i was hoping we'd see that onstage
honestly she's just so cute
are either of them aware of how blatantly they're flirting right now
that sounds like a you problem
Aldimira, the original girlboss
"nobody ever listens to me"
asking your ex-girlfriend for help writing your boyfriend's forthcoming obituary
Alcesta likes the drama
and boy did she get some drama
