the  pharaoh  was  one  of  the  major  dancers  in  ancient  egypt.  he  was  the  mediator  between  mortals  and  gods,  being  half-god  himself.  there  were  numerous,  all  equally  important  occasions  where  the  pharaoh  danced,  and  even  felt  the  weight  of  garnering  the  good-will  of  the  gods  with  his  movements.

“  the  king  comes  to  dance,  he  comes  to  sing.  sovereign  lady,  see  how  he  dances,  wife  of  horus,  see  how  he  leaps.  ”  —-  temple  of  hathor,  dendera.

events  included  festivals  and  temple  worship,  all  to  honor  a  specific  deity,  either  for  harvest  or  the  safety  of  the  people.  they  were  all  for  a  purpose.

“  in  the  dance  of  the  stars,  the  pharaoh  walked  around  the  temple  and  performed  secret  dances.  rituals  took  place  in  three  parts:  for  all  the  people,  for  the  chosen  few,  and  for  the  priests  and  gods.  a  passage  in  the  book  of  the  dead  refers  to  a  ritual  dance  in  which  kings  danced  before  their  god.  ”  —-  history  of  dance,  kassing.

a/hkmenrah  learned  to  dance  when  he  was  a  child,  and  did  so  often  to  entertain  his  mother,  whom  loved  his  sweet  dancing  above  all  else.  while  many  of  his  movements  are  deemed  ridiculous  by  modern-day  and  predominantly  western  standards,  he  was  considered  to  be  a  great  dancer  in  his  time.  his  body  had  all  the  grace  and  strength  one  needed  to  perform  many  of  the  more  taxing  forms,  though  it  wasn’t  as  flexible  as  most.  it  was  always  a  great  event  when  he  was  required  to  dance  somewhere.  though  it  was  often  for  the  privacy  of  the  temples  or  the  eyes  of  the  priests,  many  citizens  would  gather  during  harvest  festivals  to  see  him  dance.

when  needed  solemnly,  his  dancing  would  comprise  of  many  distinct  hand  movements  and  flicks  of  the  wrist,  subtle  shifts  in  the  hips  and  a  sway  that  mimicked  the  flow  of  the  nile  river.  on  his  own  and  left  to  the  freedom  of  the  music,  for  his  love  of  dance  goes  beyond  rituals,  he  has  a  much  more  vivacious  and  physical  motion,  one  that  takes  him  fluidly  across  the  floor.  fast,  but  with  a  never-ending  grace  that  has  his  body  spilling  pleasantly  over  it.
