I’d be willing to bet that rag doll that Mulder gives to Scully (technically to William) is one of the very few things of his sister’s that remains. Possibly the only thing, other than photos of her. I can’t imagine Teena or Bill could stand to keep her things around very long, since they knew on some level that they wouldn’t be getting her back. I can see them keeping her room locked until they divorced and sold the house.
Some parents of abducted children maintain their child’s room as a shrine, taking comfort from cleaning it and arranging their toys so it’s ready to welcome the child at any time. The Mulders don’t seem the type. Their pain runs too deep.
I wonder if Fox unlocked it some day that his parents weren’t home and took the rag doll as a memento. Hid it under his bed in a cigar box with pilfered photos of him with his sister, photos that were taken down not long after she vanished. All he has left of Samantha by ‘Empedocles’ is his memories, a few photos, and that doll. William will never meet his aunt, and Mulder knows that all too well, but that doll…it’s almost like giving his son the love that he knows Samantha would have felt for her nephew. The love remains, always.

the blue robe that Scully wears when she is pregnant is not hers--it's Mulder's. It's waaay too big and aren't the sleeves rolled up and still look too big? Would she buy such a big robe or just use his robe? Maybe it was a robe she brought from his apartment when he was gone.
You know...
You make a great point.

Currently translating (some of) the extant fragments of Empedocles of Acragas. All the Presocratic philosophers are fascinating, but Empedocles may be the most fascinating of them all. Aside from the content of his philosophy, which is startlingly modern in places (his account of zoogony is one of the first attempts at a theory of biological evolution in the history of Western thought), he himself was a category-buster of the first order. Was he a cosmologist? A physician? A bard? A shaman? All of the above? I love figures who defy easy classification.

To achieve Empedoclean enlightenment is to divest yourself of your ingrained attachment to familiar body shapes and conventional kinds of conduct. It is to recognise the seemingly alien other as in fact fundamentally akin to you. Revising and widening the Stoic maxim, the Empedoclean position can be captured in the proposition: I am a living being, I consider nothing alive alien to me. From this higher standpoint, the relations that bind us to our family, friends, compatriots, humanity and to other animals appear much like the spiralling whorl of a mollusc shell, each form enclosed within broader forms, with the all-embracing form of life encompassing them all.
