Elephant Sands - camping with the giants... On the way to Nata we stopped at Elephant Sands as we heard from many people before, that this place is special...and it definitely is! It's a camping lodge build around an Elephant water hole. Seems like our daily Elephant experience gets closer and more intense every day. We've spend almost a full day and a night at the camp. Those giants spend lots of time at the water hole and sometimes walked really close to our tents. When I came back from the bathroom at night, there was this Elli right in front my tent and wouldn't want to let me pass. I had to wait, walk a bit around him until he decided to move. Oh and beer in the pool with "life Elli TV" is outstanding 🐘😁... #botswana #elephantsands #elephantcorridor #wildlifecorridor #nonationalpark #wildlife #intothewild #animals #elephants #cyclingbotswana #cyclingafrica #southernafrica #adventurelifestyle #adventure #neverstopexploring #nevernotriding #outdoorisfree #outdooradventures #outsideisfreedom #livingmydreams #velosophics #bikewander #cycletouring #bushlovers #vpacebikes #ortlieb_waterproof #tarptent #bowfin1 #camping (hier: Elephant Sands) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvJv4K3AYCk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=t0qtfr2htop6
Cycled with the @locosciclos from Kasane to Nata...this about 310km long stretch is known as the elephant corridor. We saw elephants on the road and beside of the road almost everyday. How cool is that?! Wildlife in a nature park from a car is one thing, but being out there in the wild with nothing in between you and those giants is a total different thing! Some graceful giraffes also showed up. We planned to camp at least one night out in the wild. When I asked some roadworkers for water and told them about our plan, they considered our idea pretty crazy and invited us to stay at their fenced camp...well semi fenced, as the fence was widely taken down by elephants. Great guys...had good fun together and a quiet and safe night. #botswana #kasane #nata #elephantcorridor #wildlifecorridor #ridewithaview #nonationalpark #wildlife #intothewild #animals #elephants #elephantcharge #cyclingbotswana #cyclingafrica #southernafrica #adventurelifestyle #adventure #neverstopexploring #nevernotriding #outdoorisfree #outdooradventures #outsideisfreedom #livingmydreams #velosophics #bikewander #cycletouring #bushlovers #vpacebikes #ortlieb_waterproof (hier: Botswana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvJlgv7A7ik/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hjuok3o2eprv

Coorg Homestay, April 2006
Started on an early April morning for our weekend stay at Biddanda Estate - a 20 acre coffee plantation near Siddapura, Kodagu/Coorg district. Our time at the homestay Elephant Corridor, run by Viju and Nimi Chengappa in this estate was a true break from our Bangalore life and warm welcome to farms, fresh fruits, vegetables, pepper, coffee and greenery.

The roads to the home stay most probably via Mysore Road and NH-17.
Bending black roads and green meadows
And we stopped on the way to savor some green coconut water on the hot afternoon.
The tale of 4 coconuts
And a pic of A. and I - blessings of friends being around.
After a day long drive and with constant directions over phone by the cordial Viju Chengappa for the last 10 kms. - we were finally in the beautiful estate.
150 year old main house of the Biddanda Estate - Jomo scoots by.
Jomo was the most friendliest dog we came across. Whenever we ventured outside, Jomo diligently accompanied us. In the morning hike, he was almost guiding us through the estate. He led the way, regularly stopping to look back and check on us. He stopped when we stopped and patiently waited for us to make a move. From FB of Elephant Corridor came to know he passed away.
"He was a good dog, lived a good life and no one can ever replace him! 21.01.2004 – 18.02.2012."
The food in the estate cooked by the experimental chef Nimi was to die for. Made with the freshest of ingredients and with her Sri-Lankan roots, the food was nothing like we had tasted before. Each meal over here under the caring supervision and interesting conversations of the Chengappa couple was an experience in itself.

The next day started with a early morning hike through the plantations - of coffee and pepper and jackfruits. It started as a misty day and the view from our porch towards the plantations with some towering trees encouraged us to go for that early morning walk.

S. refused to come for the morning walk while PK was up and ready for it. The pics says it all.
Bachelor PK - about to lose that status, on-call with that special person. Jomo conscientiously accompanied us in our walks around the estate.
PK and his umpteen phone calls and his faraway looks from time to time were one of the highlights of this trip.
After morning walk, came back to a freshly cooked steaming Coorgi breakfast with pork pickles, akki roti, homemade jams and spicy delicious pumpkin curry.
Breakfast with Nimmi and her creations
Among the four of us, we ate and slurped on so much of the freshly made akki roti and divine pumpkin curry that the next guests had to be served continental breakfast of bread, eggs and jam.
Followed that soul-satisfying breakfast with a drive outside the estate through the other myriad coffee plantations and spring green Coorg slowly winding our way to the Dubare elephant camp.

Boat ride and elephant ride at the Dubare elephant camp.
At the age of 20 somethings then, life was all good and we jumped on to "experience" everything. After the initial euphoria of riding an elephant, we noticed how old the animals were and we almost cringed at the thought of our joy-ride. The camp conducted these rides for their sustenance but maybe we could have spared the animals and just paid for the ride towards the camp maintenance.

A sumptuous dinner later - we sat for quite a while under the starry skies in the chilly night. S., A. and I chatted with the Chengappas while PK chatted away in a different corner with his sweetheart.
Next morning, right after breakfast - Viju Chengappa shared his and Nimmi's traditional Coorgi attire for us to wear and pose!

And a fun one!
Post experimentation with poses and postures and photo sessions in Coorgi attire, it was time to leave.
More greenery on the way back
