#elementary teachers

All my elementary teachers asked my mom to teach me at home, but they were ignorant. I felt so ashamed when we would read aloud in class because it felt like everyone was making fun of me for reading slowly.

It wasn't until I got to middle school that I started reading books because we were no longer being tested on our reading speed. My 7th-grade language arts teacher taught me to love reading. She told us to find any book that seemed interesting, instead of assigning a specific book. I realized that reading books was fun when I wasn't being pressured to read aloud or being judged for how fast I read.

Wow, it’s been a hot minute since my last post. I say hot because in Square State, it’s like a windy fart outside.

Ahh...Summer.

I considered a “Continuous Ed Week 8″ post about a month ago however, by the time I had everything wrapped up for both my schools the last God forsaken thing I wanted to do is be on my work computer. 

The happiest I felt in about 10 weeks is when I converted my “Home Classroom” back to my “Sewing Room/Cat Room/Personal Office” Room.  I vacuumed, cleaned, organized, threw things out, and returned two tubs of educational tools, a box of recorders for incoming 4th graders, a box of Music K-8 magazines that my counterpart had borrowed, and random other papers to my classrooms.

I am fully aware that it all may have to be schlepped back to my house again sometime 2020-2021.  

I pray not...

however....sigh...

The hardest part of closing down the school year was when I returned to my main classroom.  I base out of the PubSch Room and just tolerate the CathSch room as it isn’t a dedicated Music Room, it is a Church Basement. 

When I returned to my Main Room, I came with and continued to add to a pile of papers. This pile was the end of year papers that were required to be dropped into the “to shred” dumpster.  Picture a large locked trash bin. Confidential papers with students’ names, copies of music that needed to be destroyed, leftover plans for Spring Programs, old class lists...  It was a large sad, heartbreaking pile.  

The year truly was over.

I updated my substantial inventories, filled out my online IDP plan, emptied my gray teaching tubs, wiped down a bunch of surfaces (just in case), re-covered the piano and stereo system, gathered the trash bags and set them out in the hall for the janitor to throw out one last time, turned in the check-out sheet to the boss which I’m pretty sure he didn’t read because he texted me with questions I had already answered on the sheet about 2020-2021, said my good-byes. 

I walked in with an Orff Cart full of crap, I left with a considerably lighter backpack and an optimistic idea for August.

I started my summer job at the local grocery store 4 days later. 

It’s almost mid summer vacation now and things are getting hinky again in the US, not only with C-19, but with some very heavy social issues too.

It is an uncertain time and weird time to turn 40, but I guess I didn’t have any choice with that second one!

“Ontario’s two largest teachers’ unions will be in a legal strike position later this month, with both saying the government has failed to address key issues in contract negotiations. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), the largest education union in the province, with 83,000 members, said on Friday that its application for a no-board report – which basically starts a 17-day countdown – has been granted by a conciliator, meaning its members will be in a legal strike position as of Nov. 25.”

“Meanwhile, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF), which represents 55,000 high-school teachers and support workers, received its no-board report last week. The union is conducting strike votes and, assuming it’s given a mandate to do so, will be in a legal strike position on Nov. 18.”

“The heads of both unions have said no decision has been made on job action, which generally begins with work-to-rule, and the reason behind requesting a no-board report is to put pressure on the government and the school boards’ association to negotiate a deal. The threat of job action in Ontario’s public-school system comes as the province passed legislation on Thursday capping public-sector wage increases to 1 per cent a year. The unions say the legislation undermines the bargaining process and they are considering legal options.”
