Then we met with the Energy Team where we learned about their goals for NetZero or 95% decarbonized by 2050-- a difficult but necessary goal. Under the OFMM, they work with nearly every team in the office to ensure that sustainability goals are being kept. Theyre working on many capital projects but also are working on central plants, energy intelligence and optimization and the electrical grid program. They are over seeing the huge project of transitioning back to electric where many buildings found electric, for heating for example, to be too expensive in the past. Overall they were clear that as designers it is our responsibility to design with the end in mind-- meaning it's essential to consider the net energy use of a building far past construction.

Finally, after lunch and some extra time to prepare a presentation, we met with the NSO group that came to visit DCAMM! We walked around the office for a tour, pointing out state buildings DCAMM has been involved with from the windows of the 15th floor. Then we were on; us four interns gave a brief presentation about our week so far at DCAMM and pointed out the highlights of our time in the office and on site.

Then we met with the Interior Planning and Design Management team to talk about their responsibilities. They walked us through the process of managing their various different models of project involvement where, for example, in capital projects they're involved from the programming stage through the schematic and budgeting stages all the way to installation and product training.

We also learned more about the necessity that is signage which we had touched on yesterday in our meeting with the accessibility division.

Then, in our third meeting, we talked with the Facility Resource division which handles the day to day facilities maintenance and management of buildings to ensure a measure of standardization. We learned about the need for prioritization in the project they take on and how budgeting factors into that. Particularly it was interesting to consider the lifespan of certain system within the context of deferred maintenance where there are so many project that demand the OFMM division's attention.

After lunch we met with Environmental Services to learn about their responsibilities. We looked at four different examples but I found the final one most compelling where we talked about PFAs used in firefighting foam and the need for their clean up. Interesting that in the past PFAs were used so commonly that I believe even one of the sites we visited yesterday mention they'd had to clean up some PFAs.

Then in our final meeting we went indepth with the OREM's Private/Public team who taught us about P3 state land which is used in partnership with a private company to achieve a desired goal. We talked about the long process of identifying, conceptualizing, administering, negotiating and finally executing a project. Then we looked at another few examples, one of which I found particularly compelling that dealt with the renovation of a domiciliary campus next to a hospital used to house veterans and their families.

From the office we then departed for the Shattock Hospital which is being newly renovated to replaced its predecessor and namesake. Once on site we got an in depth introduction to the story behind the building which took many years to get to the point of construction and is one of DCAMM's largest project to date. We went down through the muddy construction site into the basement then took the elevator up to their on site DCAMM HQ. There we got to speak with one of their on site architects and their PM about the buildings design down to the hinges on the doors. We looked over the plans they had hanging on the walls and then began our tour. We got to see a completely gutted floor and one with walls still intact, then onto the mock up on the roof. The whole experience was fascinating, to get a glance into the design of hospitals-- especially on a state level.

Then after a brief lunch break and a car ride out to Framingham we arrived at the new Mass Bay Community College building. This building will accommodate a spectrum of health care training facilities including mock nursing and EMT simulation classrooms. A new building, the exterior is beautifully modern with an art installation and many big windows. The interior was beginning to take shape as we got to see freshly plastered classrooms, offices and finally the roof. You could tell how much time was put into the process of designing this building.
