OMG I have so many thoughts too, and to tell you where my head is at a little bit, I've decided to reread the entire thing from the beginning to see all the bits I missed...for the first half of the book I was pleasantly intrigued but also felt like I wasn't smart enough to really process everything, so maybe that will change now that I know what I do?

Thanks! :D It's a horror/fantasy short story that combines a plot bunny and an unused concept from Like Snow on Hungry Graves. The plot bunny is about a scammer who pretends to have cancer; the unused concept is Elamirja using a slightly different method to get revenge on his rapist. (The supernatural creature wreaking bloody vengeance on the characters in Thyestes Redux isn't named; I've flip-flopped on whether he's Elamirja, one of his children, or an unrelated but similar character.)

Hey! I've actually been doing much better. I still have a residual cough and I'm a little more tired than usual, but that might just be the weather changing. I've slowwwwly been able to start writing again, even just a few hundred words a day.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

Okay, so, the very first scene that I wrote for my “Jurassic Park with Faeries” WIP is one that I still intensely love, but... while I originally thought it’d come fairly early on, it’s turned out to occur slightly over halfway through the book. 

This wouldn’t be a problem, as it’d only require minor reworking to ensure it still fits the character voices and the details of the plot as it’s unfolded. Except. It’s also the scene where a character I really, really like is first introduced. 

Introducing a fairly major character that far along is not really supposed to happen, but there you are. Nothing else really works for his debut in meeting the two main protagonists of the book. I’m definitely going to need to go back and add at least a couple scenes from his perspective before that point so it’s not so out of the blue and he’s got a little more context, but ah well. 

Hmmm, I’m getting either magic realism or very serious growth or coming of age story vibes from this like a group of kids trying to find their place in the world, trying to find their way home or make their own. I also feel like music has something to do with it, but I’m not too sure about that.

So first guess:

[Protagonist] was kicked out of their house at a young age, living on the road or in the streets with only their music as companion, hoping against all hope for the day that might never come, the day they get to go back to their family, the possibility calling to them like a siren song they can’t follow. But when they find others like them, same story, same goal, they start to think maybe that’s not what they really want after all. Maybe something better awaits them. They make new friends, and for the first time in forever, they feel like they belong. Maybe they form a band, maybe they just form a tight knit group. The laughter, the singing, the love... When they finally get the chance to go home, they realize, that siren call is not what they want anymore, this, this is the real sound of home.

Not a genre I know very well so I’m probably way off the money.

And then the probably even less accurate, more surreal-y guess:

All of a sudden, their energy levels hit the roof. They started squealing and shouting and I didn’t have a clue why. Then one of them directed me to the photo they’d seen, which was one of, I think it was a male actor in a gym.

I was so confused. My friends were still screaming, and I honestly sat there scanning the background and the guy’s face and wondering if I’d found the right photo. They were calling him hot. I thought he looked warm, and should go sit down with a cold drink.

It was weird at the time, of course, but now I can’t help laughing. Spoiler alert, past me: there’s a reason for that!

Same lol, I follow these Harry Styles blogs and sometimes they’ll reblog this mundane photo of him with these very sexual comments in the tags and I just sit there like ???? He’s handsome but I don’t see what's so sexual about those photos 😅
