Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) is a spring ephemeral, meaning it shows up early before the forest canopy fills in, lures the bees to a couple days of pollen (but no nectar!), photosynthesizes a year's worth of energy, and disappears by summer. The seeds are coated with oily flesh that is delicious to ants who carry them into their nests, helping this plant to quickly form colonies in a forest. Basically, this plant really knows how to delegate its reproduction to the insect world, gets it done early, and spends the rest of the year sleeping underground. I had the loveliest day in the @westernreserveherbsociety garden yesterday. Dye is often a tough garden to explain to our guests because most often you’d call our plants “weeds” albeit ancient and useful ones. Our plants in dye share a common bond with the plants in our medicinal section … they’re not always pretty and you can’t really see who they are or what they do, because the dyes or medicines often come from roots stems and leaves, not the pretty flowers, which are more than likely a bonus! Since I became responsible for this part of the garden I’ve been on a quest to make it more relatable, and that means including some of the more common plants like lavenders, iron weed, mulleins, berries and roses, things that people can look at and think to themselves… “ oh ok, they’d squish the berries and get purple dye….or sure, a red rose would make a pretty pink dye!” So to make a long story short, Richard our newest honorary member whom I refer to as our personal “ Rose Whisperer” has been helping me accomplish this task and I’ve been able to transplant at least 4 different varieties into the Dye garden with his help! Yesterday he gave me a really precious gift. He had to clean up one of my favorites , a rowdy and sweetly fragrant Burnet Rose that had grown gangly and overbearing. I mean this rose is a solid one with its roots back in the 1600’s so it’s got amazing survival skills. Richard had a perfect specimen for me with a healthy root ball and just the right size for a place I’ve been struggling with structurally in the garden. In it went with his help and we trimmed it up a bit and it will be glorious next year when it’s blooming right next to the Elderberry with the Rosa Tuscany’s blooming at its base. The hips that the Burnet produces are my favorites of all, they’re deep burgundy black which produces a beautiful dye color and they’re spicy like cinnamon and are wonderful for teas. Check out that color! It's blueuuuuuuuue! The dried leaves on the indigo plants that have managed to survive got wet in the recent rain and turned blue! Soooo cool! I sure hope the handful of remaining plants (ugh, out of 80 or so I initially started) provide enough leaves to be able to dye something reasonably sized. To understand the beautiful dye garden I work in you need to have the soul of a Medieval monk. You need patience, you need to listen and look for clues. None of these plants give up their secrets easily...probably the first dyes were discovered when harvesting herbs, weeds and vegetables for food , paints and medicines as infusions would have been the simplest way to create tinctures and cordials. We have purple cabbage in this garden to make dye from and the roots of the buttercup create a glorious purple dye... the Queen Anne’s lace a brilliant yellow. The commonest of “ weeds” produce some of the most brilliant hues and I am grateful to learn these mysteries, these old ways. We take a lot of teasing for this garden, we’re not at all formal, we’re the wild child of the @westernreserveherbsociety herb garden. We’re the keeper of the secret gate, of the strong hawthorn hedge that protects us from much of the outside world. We have in our midst what many would refer to as weeds, but are among the oldest of the usable plants. As such, were not quite as neat or as “ pretty” as the other more formal gardens and we are easily misunderstood.
