During an interview session for a design challenge, the teacher came to me and told me that her student with selective mutism was talking to a classmate she never talked to before in a speaking voice! She usually only talks to 5 classmates. #Design Challenge: How might we improve our classroom? During the Empathize phase of this #designthinking, #socialstudies project, #3rdgrade students interviewed their classmates to learn about their needs and wants. We first talked about the things a "good interviewer" does to gain information from people. I then modeled the interview process with the homeroom teacher, first asking questions to get to know the person and building rapport, and then asking questions about the challenge. The power of prototyping and building to think! When working with two 2nd grade classes on their prototypes for their museum exhibit, one student came up to me and stated "I think I'm getting smarter." This was his reaction when he saw that he was able to creatively problem-solve when faced with multiple design obstacles. So many times Ss work on learning activities where there is only one way to do things. Ss found that the exhibits communicated information using clear layouts, provided immersive experiences, activated one or more of the five senses, and provoking emotions. G4 Ss loved sharing their ideas w/ their classmates during the @ideo Really Bad Ideas brainstorm! Developing creative "fluency" in a lowstakes, nonjudgmental brainstorming environment. Led to large quantity of ideas and less frequency of getting stuck! Warm up to get the juices flowing. Some of these bad ideas could have been modified to become innovative ones by building upon them.
