Since 1625 #Eccentric #Salons hosted in the #drawingrooms & #palaces of #Mayfair have spearheaded the #scientific & #cultural ideas which made Britain the hub of eccentricity. The most celebrated #Salon of #history was hosted by #ElizabethMontague (‪2nd October‬ 1718-1800). In her Peacock feather lined drawing room in Montagu House on Portman Square from 1777-1800 Elizabeth Montague - whom #lordbyron Declared - Queen of The Blues - presided over the greatest salon of the world, assembling #artists #artisans #writers #scientists #composers inventors, mathematicians, bankers, captains of industry & international trading companies. Guests included Lord Byron, Queen Charlotte, Ignatius Sancho, Thomas Coutts, artists Thomas Gainsborough, Angelica Kauffman RA who painted the walls & ceilings of most of Mayfair, Samuel Johnson, David Garrick, Sir Joshua Reynolds, & author Fanny Burney. Such was the lure of her salons on Portman Square they not only attracted artists & thinkers but the leading captions of industry & finance including Thomas Coutts, the Head of the East India Company & Bank of England.
