Silence stretched on in the station as Max and Inés slowly processed what they’d just heard. Max tried to block out the thought that he should’ve been there with Miranda, should’ve made sure she wouldn’t go off to do any work on the case without him. Because he’d known she wanted to be working round the clock on it… and if he’d just made sure she’d told him whenever she wanted to do stupid things like setting up meetings in remote places in the early hours of the morning…
“There’s nothing else?” Inés eventually asked Muñoz, barely managing to hide the breakdown that was threatening to crash over her at the thought of Miranda willingly going with the abductor just to keep them all safe.
Muñoz shook his head. “The recording goes on for a while longer, but I listened to some of it while I was waiting for you, and there’s been nothing useful so far. Just leaves and birds and things.”
“Ok…” Her voice shook ever so slightly, but Muñoz had the good sense to act like he hadn’t noticed. “Then we should get the technical team to trace all mobile phones in the area — see if they can find one that enters shortly before the recording started, and leaves at the same time as Miranda.”
“That could take a while, and a lot of resources…” Muñoz said doubtfully.
Inés fixed him with a steely look, as if daring him to continue refusing, and he fell silent as she started to speak.
“We are following every lead to find Miranda — every single one.” Her voice was laced with anger, and it grew to a yell as she continued, her emotions almost overwhelming her. “I don’t care if you think she’s not worth the effort we’re going to, or that we shouldn’t be using all our resources trying to find her — she’s my officer and my friend, and I am not going to rest until she’s found! ¿Comprendes?”
Muñoz quickly nodded.
“Of course — I’m sorry, I didn’t mean—” He broke off. “I’ll call the technical team now.”
He hurriedly grabbed his phone and left the room, and Inés turned to Max.
“You’re quiet, Winter, and that’s always concerning — it normally means you’re planning something stupid.”
“I know his voice…” Max said slowly, his brow creased as he looked over at Inés. “The guy on the recording, I know his voice.”
“Are you quite sure? You’re not just mistaking him for someone else, someone who sounds similar?”
“It’s a pretty distinctive voice,” Max said. “Spanish, but mixed with another strong accent… Scottish, maybe? Or Australian?”
Inés didn’t comment on how awful his geography skills must be if he thought Scottish and Australian accents were similar.
“It’s got to be the same guy,” Max continued, shrugging as if that should be obvious. “But where the hell do I know him from?”
“An old case?” Inés suggested. “If it’s someone who has a grudge against you, that could explain why he’s targeted Miranda like this.”
“No, no way. A grudge wouldn’t explain why he was asking what we know about the gang.”
Not finding any fault in that logic, Inés just gave a frustrated sigh.
Max thought for a moment, then said, “I’ll keep trying to remember, but while I’m doing that… maybe I could try to find out how the guy learnt about the meeting if it was arranged on a secure line? You know, track down the informant, see what—”
“No, Winter.”
He quickly stopped talking, looking a little scared as Inés stood up straight again and fixed him with a look that clearly meant she was expecting no arguments. Ordinarily that look would’ve made him fall back into line at once… but this time was different. Miranda had been abducted, and they needed to find her. Urgently.
“But I—”
“I said NO!”
Max automatically took a step back, putting his hands up in surrender — although neither he nor Inés could really tell whether he was being serious about it, or just trying to ease the tension with his usual badly-timed jokes.
“It was just a suggestion…”
Inés pinched the bridge of her nose and let out another sigh.
“It’s too dangerous,” she said, in a slightly less angry tone. “We can get Vice to try and make contact with the informant, but I’m not sending any of my officers until I’m certain it’s safe.”
“But Miranda—”
“—Won’t be found any faster if more officers get abducted… or worse,” Inés cut in. “As I said, I’ll get onto Vice about it. And in the meantime, I want you to do everything you can to remember where you know the abductor’s voice from. Listen to Miranda’s voice recording, stare off into space and think, even read through your old case files if that’s what it takes. The sooner we can tie an identity to the voice, the sooner we can track down where he might be keeping Miranda.”
Max just nodded, knowing not to continue arguing. “Ok, yeah, I’ll do that.”
He carefully picked up Miranda’s phone, taking it over to his desk and gently setting it down next to his computer keyboard, treating it as if it was the most fragile and precious thing in the world. Right now, it was their only source of leads… and their only way of hearing Miranda’s voice again.
But not for long, he silently told himself. They were going to find her soon — and that was a promise.
