An amazing follow on from The Wizard of Oz with a dark twist. This series manages to reference both the original books and movies perfectly whilst also making it its own story. It ends with you wanting more, but sadly no other books are in the works.

Two opponents from completely opposite worlds meet, one the Wicked WARLOCK of the east whilst the other is the crown prince and heir to a burning throne. I'm just gonna compare and contrast the two because it's something I've always had on my mind since finishing Red Queen.

Cal

Despite being on the front for a long time, Cal is rather calm and actually happy in a lot of instances. He does get angry, but being a prince he was probably taught to keep himself in check so no one gets burned alive. He's a crafty lad, as seen by how he BUILT HIS OWN MOTORCYCLE(sign this guy up for Harley Davidson) and can fly an assortment of aircrafts. Cal is also an insanely strong leader, as seen by how he had a legion of Silvers ready to take to the front. He is a good strategist but not a great one; he once commanded Reds to march across a river and needless to say, not everyone made it out alive. He is a strong fighter, using his burner ability most often, but is good with hand to hand combat and sword fighting.

Cal harbors guilt for his actions and is very emotional for a soldier, being annoyed for being prohibited from leaving to the front, being remorse for the Reds who died on the river, his refusal to kill Ptolemus, despite the mad dog wanting to kill him. The worst we've seen him is after his Father's death, something he had nightmares of for quite some time.

It is described that Cal is 6'3" and is extremely fit, being a soldier and all. We also hear numerous times that Cal cannot make his own decisions or is easily read and manipulated. This is not good on a number of reasons but the top reason is that he could be and is used as a pawn by others. Cal is also the favorite son, the crown prince, and is loved considerably more than Maven, who he loved very much and mourned heavily upon the younger brother's passing.

Nox

There is A LOT about Nox we don't know, but I'll focus more on what we have.

Like Cal, Nox is an orphan, but unlike Cal, Nox was presumably a common boy, not royalty. It is unclear as whether his parents burned to death or drowned, but the point is they're both dead in his mind. He lived on the streets for many years before being rescued by Mombi and trained to fight in the ROoTW. Over time, he got so good he began training any new comers.

Nox is a traumatized boy, having seen most of his students die on missions and feeling the weight of their deaths on his shoulders. Where Cal is confirmed to be 20 years old and experienced with death and war to the point of it not exactly bothering him, Nox is 18, judging by how he is registered as an adult in The End of Oz, and seeing people he's cared about die is much worse than what Cal experienced, almost to the point of suicide if he had to witness another student die. Since he had nothing, Nox decided to join the witches, Gert, Glamora, and Mombi, to form the Quadrant. This act possivly caused him mental and emotional anguish, considering how his girlfried literally watched him in this act.

It is highly implied Nox fears the Lion and that the two share some sort of history, the same being said for Glinda and Dorothy. Why this is, I can't exactly say, but it's most likely been happening for a while.

We don't know how tall Nox is, but we can assume he is shorter than Cal based on how Amy can easily rest her head on his shoulder. He is also presumably aged very little by war physically, but not mentally exactly; kill off one of his friends and the guy crumbles. He is also not as strong as the other three witches, as seen when he faces the Nome King and is almost killed. Nox is defensive of Amy, most notably to Madison in TEoO.
