Dolgarrog Hydroelectric Plant Reopened
In what is seen as good news for North Wales, the oldest Welsh hydroelectric dam has been reopened by the Welsh Government First Minister.
First Minister Carwyn Jones performed the opening switch-on ceremony today.
“The renewable energy sector is of vital importance to Wales,” said The First Minister.
“It is good to see the historic power station here in Dolgarrog safeguarded for years to come, and the economic benefit that will also bring to the area. North Wales has a long and innovative history of producing renewable energy through hydro power and, as the new turbine hall at Dolgarrog shows, it also has a bright future.”
The reopening of the Dolgarrog plant was made possible through a ÂŁ15 million investment.
This investment will safeguard 40 jobs.
Over £7million, more than half the investment, went to North Wales companies including Jones Bros, based in Ruthin, and Bangor’s Dawnus.
The works required improvements to highway, track and infrastructure, and these have been retained for the benefit of residents.
Dr Olaf Heil is Head of Hydro Power and New Applications for RWE Innogy.
He said that it was a significant day for the company, the Conwy Valley and hydro power in Wales.
“The generation of reliable hydro-electric power has been around fr decades and is a crucial part of the energy mix in Wales,” he added.
“Our Dolgarrog power station, and the Conwy Valley, have been at the heart of that generation for well over 100 years.
“The refurbishment protects the jobs of the 40 staff who work in the heart of the local community.”
The original Dolgarrog construction, by the Aluminium Corporation to provide power for smelting aluminium in the Conwy Valley, was carried out in 1920.
The project raised the level of Lake Eigiau by 6 metres from where it flowed to the edge of the valley overlooking the village more than 300 metres below.
A single steel pipeline delivered the water to the power station.
Today, Cowlyd reservoir provides water for Dolgarrog’s “high head” scheme (17MW total output) via a 5km pipeline.
The total catchment area is about 44 square kilometres.
Coedty reservoir provides water for Dolgarrog’s “low head” scheme (15MW total output) via a 3km pipeline.
Coedty’s catchment area is about 27 square kilometres.
