I’ve tried to answer this ask many times, but my answer kept bloating into this massive unwieldy text wall. So, I challenged myself to fit as much as I could into an 8-page mini zine—something bite-sized I could just hand out to people—and this was the result!

Hi everyone! This post is a long, LONG guide on how to generally create a Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition character.
The first thing to do is choose race and class.
Race is what you are, and class is what you do!
For example: Elf Fighter. Elf is the race, fighter is the class.
Here’s a list of all the races: http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/lineage

And here’s a list of all the classes:

These are the most important facets of your character. There are practically infinite combinations, so choose some, and have fun!
Next, rolling stats.
Roll 4 six sided die. Then drop the lowest number, and add them all together. Do this 6 times, and make the results under the six stats below.
Strength: physical… strength of a character. Self explanatory.
Dexterity: the flexibility and speed of a character.
Constitution: the physical body’s immune system and durability.
Intelligence: the book smarts of a character. Ex: you know how many tomato’s you can shove into your mouth.
Wisdom: the general common sense of a character. Ex: knowing not to shove tomato’s into your mouth, because that’s dumb.
Charisma: your character’s likability, persuasiveness, etc.
Then, convert those numbers into modifiers. That’s done by using this simple chart:
10-11=+0
12-13=+1
14-15=+2
16-17=+3
18=+4
Etc.
Note that you can increase the values of the preconverted stats depending on race and class.
Constructing other stats!
HP= Constitution + (one roll of your class’ hit dice, max value at level one.)
Armor Class: if someone rolls to hit you, they need to roll above this number on the D20 to hit!= Dexterity +armor + accessories.
Spell save DC: if you cast a spell that demands the target make a saving throw, this is the value they must beat to succeed: 8 + Proficiency bonus (2 at level three, 3 at level five, etc) + Spell Stat (depends on class)
Spell Modifier: what you add to an attack roll using a spell= proficiency bonus + Spell Stat
